Description
The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas turbocharger (ATL) with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and a wastegate, which optionally passes part of an exhaust gas stream past the ATL, wherein a VTG position and a wastegate position are set operating point-dependent, according to claim 1.
It is known to use an exhaust gas turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) to increase the power output of an internal combustion engine. When designing such a VTG turbocharger, there are two ways to optimize the design of the supercharger for the engine. On the one hand, the rated load range can be optimized in the design and, on the other hand, the focus can be placed on a particularly good torque at low speeds (LowEnd-Torque) and transient behavior. In the former case, a large turbine will be laid out, resulting in a turbocharger controlled only by variable turbine geometry (VTG). However, if the lower end of the speed range is to be optimized, the design on a small turbine is preferred. In such a design, one will try to take full advantage of the turbine variability of the VTG turbine to improve low end torque and transient behavior. In such a case, however, the turbine can not absorb the entire exhaust gas mass flow occurring at the nominal point, which is why an additional wastegate is required.
If such an ATL with VTG and wastegate is used, there are several points in the operating map of the engine that can not be clearly assigned to a particular setting for VTG and wastegate, i. the same operating point can be set with different combinations of wastegate opening angle and VTG vane position.
When using an ATL turbine with adjustable vane ring (VTG), care must be taken that not every vane position results in the same turbine efficiency. In the currently known VTG turbines, the efficiencies fall sharply, especially at very large opening angles. For the engine, decreasing efficiencies at the ATL mean that the pressure ratio in the intake manifold (depending on the target torque) requires a higher and higher exhaust counterpressure upstream of the ATL turbine. This increases the charge cycle work for the engine and consequently the consumption. Due to the high pressure upstream of the turbine, the temperature load on the components also becomes higher, which must be prevented by additional enrichment of the fuel-air mixture that is to be burned.

The invention has for its object to improve the operation of an internal combustion engine, which is equipped with an ATL with VTG and a wastegate.
This object is achieved by a method of o.g. Art solved with the features characterized in claim 1.
- (a) Bestimmen einer für den aktuellen Betriebspunkt und das gewünschte Motormoment maximalen Wastegate-Stellung, mit der das gewünschte Motormoment noch eingestellt werden kann;
- (b) Bestimmen aller für den aktuellen Betriebspunkt möglichen Kombinationen von Wastegate-Stellung und VTG-Stellung, mit denen das gewünschte Motormoment eingestellt werden kann, für alle Wastegate-Stellung zwischen der in Schritt (a) bestimmten maximalen Wastegate-Stellung und einem geschlossenen Wastegate;
- (A) determining a maximum wastegate position for the current operating point and the desired engine torque with which the desired engine torque can still be set;
- (b) determining all combinations of wastegate position and VTG position possible for the current operating point, with which the desired engine torque can be set, for all wastegate position between the maximum wastegate position determined in step (a) and a closed wastegate ;
- (c) selecting the combination of the combinations determined in step (b) which has the best possible ATL efficiency for the current operating point of the internal combustion engine.
This has the advantage that a control strategy is available that optimally exploits the advantages of an ATL with two control elements, namely with a VTG and a wastegate.
It is determined in step (c) that combination of wastegate position and VTG position with the best ATL efficiency for the current operating point of the internal combustion engine, characterized in that a combination of wastegate position and VTG position is selected in which an amount the difference between the intake manifold pressure minus the exhaust back pressure before the ATL is maximum when the intake manifold pressure is greater than the exhaust back pressure before the ATL, or at which the difference in intake manifold pressure minus exhaust back pressure before the ATL is minimal when the intake manifold pressure is less than the exhaust back pressure before the ATL ATL is.
All combination options are stored in a pilot control map with the purging gradient calculated for them in the form of the pressure difference "intake manifold pressure minus exhaust pressure before ATL", whereby the optimum combination of VTG control and wastegate activation is determined on the basis of this pilot control map.
Diese zeigt in The invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing. This shows in
The invention will be described below with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the method according to the invention for operating an internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas turbocharger (ATL) with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and a wastegate (WG). The position of the WG or the VTG is determined by means of a clock ratio with which an actuator for the WG or the VTG is activated. In the illustrated embodiment, the actuators for WG and VTG are designed such that an increase in the duty ratio means an adjustment of WG or VTG in the direction of a higher boost pressure and a higher relative air mass R L. Depending on the type of actuator or actuator for WG or VTG may be necessary for an increase of R L and a reduction of the clock ratio. The instructions in the structograms described below should then be reversed accordingly. For a reduction of the clock ratio, the analogy applies.
Hereinafter , "R L_soll " denotes a target value for the relative air mass R L , "WG-Aaktakt" a clock ratio supplied to the actuator of the WG, "VTG-Ackaktung" a clock ratio supplied to the actuator of the VTG of the ATL and "LDR" a wastegate.

The invention provides a control strategy for the two actuators of VTG and wastegate, which always ensures optimum engine operation. According to the invention, the scavenging gradient between intake valves and exhaust valves, calculated as the pressure difference "intake manifold pressure minus exhaust pressure before ATL, is selected as the optimization variable." For operating points which can only be achieved with the wastegate closed, the control system reacts expediently into the charge pressure control of the engine control unit (STG). As with a VTG turbocharger without an integrated wastegate, the load points are set exclusively via the idea of the vane ring on the turbine, ie the VTG Control The operating point with the best ATL efficiency set This best ATL efficiency for the respective operating point is characterized by the best possible scavenging gradient, as defined above, for the respective operating point.
For the regulation of these operating points, it is inventively provided that the WG position is completely adjusted via a pilot control map. During the application process, this pilot control map must be based on the optimization variable "Purge Slope" proposed here. The purging gradient is to be optimized in such a way that the value calculated from "intake manifold pressure" and "exhaust gas backpressure before turbine" becomes maximum, ie with a positive purging gradient the amount of the difference must become maximum and with a negative purging gradient the amount of the difference must be minimal. The fine control, especially during dynamic engine operation, is ensured by adjusting the VTG turbine.
The algorithm described in the structograms can also be implemented for an automated calibration program within a test bench software. The same applies to the optimization process of the "flushing gradient" as already described for the application strategy. The variables "intake manifold pressure" and "exhaust gas backpressure upstream of turbine" can be measured directly or taken from other models stored in the control unit.
