Abstract
Description
Die Arbeitstemperaturen einer Hochtemperatur-Brennstoffzelle liegen in der Regel zwischen 600 und 950°C.Fuel cells are constructed very differently and are operated at very different temperatures. According differently different fuel cells are called. A fuel cell that operates at very high temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius is called a high temperature fuel cell. The working temperatures of a high-temperature fuel cell are generally between 600 and 950 ° C.
- - The high operating temperatures require the use of temperature-resistant materials. This leads to high material costs and reduces the service life of such a fuel cell. The high operating temperatures complicate mobile use, for example in a motor vehicle or use in the private sector.
- - The energy density is comparatively low.
It is an object of the invention to provide a method for the creation of a cathode-electrolyte composite, so as to arrive at a high-performance high-performance fuel cell and to provide a corresponding cathode.
The invention makes it possible to produce cathodes having a significantly larger active surface area. The achievable specific cathode surface is 15 to 900 square meters per gram of cathode material and thus exceeds the state of the art very clearly. Since the active surface of a high temperature fuel cell currently limits performance, increasing the active surface results in a corresponding increase in fuel cell performance.
By choosing small diameters of starting powders used to make the cathode and by creating pores in the powder, large surfaces can be achieved at a cathode. Pores in the powder are produced according to the invention by fillers which are removed from the powder in due course.
According to the method is based on soluble salts of various metals, a solvent and a filler. As filler, sufficiently small carbon particles are chosen in one embodiment, since they can easily be removed by burning in due course. The starting materials are mixed appropriately. When the soluble salts disintegrate, mixtures of hydroxide and oxide particles containing the filler (s) are produced. Subsequently, the fillers are removed, for example by burning. For example, the hydroxide and oxide particles are thermally treated for this purpose, for example calcined for a few hours. The resulting metal oxide powder is porous and forms the starting material for the preparation of the cathode.
Optionally, a plasticizer may additionally be provided as starting material. This improves the viscosity during mixing and homogenization. Agglomerations between the carbon particles are thus reduced. This positively influences the final porosity.
Electrochemical processes taking place in a cathode limit the performance of a high temperature fuel cell. These are, above all, those processes which depend on the surface of the catalytically active material of a cathode, such as oxygen diffusion, oxygen dissociation, oxygen reduction and ionic conductivity of the surface. Since a significant enlargement of the active surface of a cathode has been achieved by the invention, so also achieves a significantly improved performance of a fuel cell.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, porous powders with mean diameters of 1 to 30 nm are produced so as to obtain surfaces at a cathode of 15 to 400 m 2 / g. Salts with metallic components are mixed together with carbon particles, preferably carbon black in a solvent. The salts include, above all, nitrates. The salts dissolve in the solvent. The carbon particles are chosen so that they preferably have a mean diameter of 3 to 25 nm.
The mixture is homogenized, for example by mechanical stirring or sonication, thermally treated and dried. The salts are thermally decomposed and the carbon now in the resulting powder burned, for example at temperatures between 150 and 850 ° C in an oxygen-containing gas such as air, oxygen, ozone and / or N 2 O. The powder is sintered on a Electrolyte layer applied, for example, by a screen printing method, by a wet powder spraying method, by coating methods such as dip coating or spin coating (= preparation method in which the laminate is applied to a very fast rotating substrate), by molding, by evaporation or a combination thereof. By thermal treatment at 650 ° C to 1200 ° C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere so the cathode is prepared with a surface area of 15 to 400 m 2 / g. The average size of the regularly distributed pores is then typically 1 to 30 nm. It is an open-pored structure. In particular, more than 70% of the pores contribute to the surface of the cathode.
In another embodiment of the invention, salts with metallic components are mixed together with a surfactant in a solvent. The salts then mainly include halides. The salts dissolve in the solvent.
The mixture is homogenized and thermally treated and dried. By adding a basic solution, a precipitation is carried out. First, the result is thermally treated at temperatures between minus 15 ° C and 100 ° C and then at temperatures of 75 ° C to 250 ° C. The solid particles are separated from the remaining liquid, such as by filtration, sedimentation, centrifugation or a combination thereof. The organic components now in the resulting powder are burned, for example at temperatures between 150 and 850 ° C in an oxygen-containing gas such as air, oxygen, ozone and / or N 2 O. The powder is applied to a sintered electrolyte layer, so for example, by screen printing, by a wet powder spraying method, by coating methods such as dip coating or spin coating, by die casting, vapor deposition or a combination thereof. By thermal treatment at 650 ° C to 1200 ° C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere, the cathode is thus prepared with a surface area of 30 to 900 m 2 / g. The cathode has uniformly distributed pores with a mean size of 5 to 80 Å. The size of the pores may be unmodal or bimodal. Above all, more than 80% of the pores contribute to the surface of the cathode.
Particularly suitable solvents are water or ethanol. But there are also other solvents such as alcohols and polyhydric alcohols, ethers, ketones, alkanes, alkenes and mixtures of solvents into consideration. The salts in one embodiment of the invention contain nitrates, halides, sulfates, acetate, oxalate, alkoxides, acetylacetonate, hydroxides, citrates or combinations thereof.
As the surfactant, for example, polyoxyethylene alkyl ether, polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene triblock copolymer, an alkylammonium salt having a molecular weight of more than 100 D, or an organic amine are suitable. Suitable basic components for the precipitation reaction are alkali metal hydroxides, alkali earth metal hydroxides, alkali metal carbonates, ammonia, urea, purine, pyrimidine, aniline or combinations thereof.
- - Cerium oxide doped with a Gd, Sm, Pr, Nd, Er, Yb and / or Dy and / or
- Zirconia doped with Y, Sc, Ca, Mg, Al, Er, Yb, Gd, and / or with elements from the series Eu to Dy and / or

Der Anteil an Edelmetall in der Kathode beträgt vorzugsweise 0,1 bis 2,5 Gew.-%.Such a cathode may have a perovskite structure, fluorine calcium structure, pyrochlore structure, round-read popper oxide structure or a bronze structure and may be provided with noble metals such as Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ru, Re, Ag, Ir or a combination thereof. The content of noble metal in the cathode is preferably 0.1 to 2.5 wt .-%.
The salts preferably include cerium. In one embodiment, the salt used is in particular a cerium nitrate as starting material. The result then according to the invention is a cathode based on CeO 2 . This is preferably doped with at least one rare earth element. The material has a fluorite structure and is a pure ionic conductor at the operating temperatures prevailing in a high temperature fuel cell. The dopant advantageously increases the desired ionic conductivity and advantageously stabilizes the cubic fluorite structure. Overall, a cathode is thus provided which is able to transport oxygen ions particularly well.
Eine zusätzliche Dotierung des ZrO2 mit einem anderen zweiten Elemente wie La, Sr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cr, Pr, Ba, Ca, Ni, Cu, Ti, Y, Zr bis Ce verbessert ebenfalls weiter den Transport von Sauerstoffionen und damit die Leistungsfähigkeit der Brennstoffzelle.Additional doping of ZrO 2 with another second element such as La, Sr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cr, Pr, Ba, Ca, Ni, Cu, Ti, Y, Zr to Ce also further improves the transport of oxygen ions and thus the performance of the fuel cell.
In one embodiment of the invention, a perovskite structure ABO 3 of the cathode is preferred in order to obtain a particularly good catalytic activity for the reduction of oxygen, a particularly good electronic conductivity, ion conductivity and thermal stability. Typical materials are LaSrMn or LaSrFeCo. In some cases, positions A and B are advantageously replaced by elements such as Cr, Pr, Ba, Ca, Ni, Cu, Ti, Y, Zr or Ce so as to improve the performance of the cathode. The addition of noble metals further improves the catalytic activity with respect to the reduction of oxygen.

First, 4.6 g of cerium (III) nitrate and 1.19 g of gadolinium (III) nitrate are dissolved in 50 ml of absolute ethanol. Then 1 gram of carbon black or carbon black with a mean diameter of 12 nm is added. The mixture is homogenized in a glass flask in an ultrasonic bath for two hours. The very viscous mixture is then stirred or mixed at a temperature of 60 ° C for 24 hours. Subsequently, an evaporation is allowed.
By ion exchange, about 1 wt% Pd is added to the light yellow powder as follows. 0.85 g of the light yellow powder is exposed to an aqueous Pd solution for 20 hours at 90 ° C. The aqueous solution comprises 0.0002% by weight of palladium (II) nitrate. Subsequently, the resulting solid is washed, dried and ground for two days in a ball mill.
One gram of the powder thus obtained and La0 0.65 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 perovskite material obtained by spray-drying are milled together. It is obtained as a composite powder. This composite powder is mixed with 2 g of a solution of ethylcellulose in terpineol (6 wt .-%) and ground in a 3-roll mill until a homogeneous paste is obtained. A thin film of this paste having an initial thickness of, for example, 73 μm is applied to the top of an electrolyte, such as a sintered, flat 8YSZ electrolyte, for example by screen printing. The film is dried at 60 ° C. for 8 hours. The film is calcined at 920 ° C. for three hours together with the electrolyte and, advantageously, with anode material attached thereto. The temperature is increased to reach the final temperature by 3 ° C per minute and finally cooled again at 5 ° C per minute.
For example, an 8YSZ / NiO cermet with a functional layer of 8YSZ / NiO is provided as the anode substrate. The electrolyte layer is then located on the anode substrate and the cathode material produced according to the invention on the electrolyte layer.

The film is dried at 60 ° C. for 8 hours. The film is calcined at 920 ° C for three hours together with the electrolyte, for example consisting of 8YSZ and advantageously still attached thereto anode material such as consisting of 8YSZ / NiO. The temperature is increased to reach the final temperature by 3 ° C per minute and finally cooled again at 5 ° C per minute. The result is a fuel cell.
By varying the respective treatment periods and temperatures, the surface which is finally obtained at the cathodes is adjusted. The surface can thus be changed within the specified ranges.
