Das bei der Förderung von Erdöl freigesetzte Erdgas 5 wird der Anlage 2 über eine Leitung 6 zugeführt. Das im Erdgas enthaltene Methan wird mittels Wasser­ dampf gemäß folgender Gleichung CH4 + H2O → 3H2 + CO2 in Wasserstoff 7 und Kohlenstoff (hier nicht dargestellt) umgesetzt. Der Wasserstoff 7 wird den Brennstoffzellen 3 über die Leitung 8 zugeführt, und dort in elektische Energie umgesetzt. Diese wird dazu verwendet, den für die Spaltung erforderlichen Wasserdampf herzustellen. Der Kohlenstoff wird an Land transportiert und zu Fasern (hier nicht dargestellt) verar­ beitet.
