Description
This invention relates to the treatment of tobacco leaf material for the manufacture of tobacco products.
The varieties of tobacco leaves used to produce cigarettes and similar fruit include leaf lamina, a main longitudinal rib (midrib) and leaf nerves extending from the main rib. The main rib and the leaf nerves are hereinafter referred to as "leaf bull. The strength characteristics of the stalk differ significantly from those of the lamina. It is also a long-established practice to separate the stalk from the lamina at an early stage of the treatment of tobacco leaves, with the stalk and lamina then treated independently and differently.
The stems are generally separated from the lamina by means of a complex and large threshing device. This threshing consists of a number, z. Eight, in-line threshing machines with classifiers located between adjacent threshing machines.
As is known, the separated stem or part thereof, after appropriate comminution, is often returned to the lamina after the lamina has been subjected to further treatment. The stem is often used in the tobacco mix to improve the filling value.
It is common in comminution of the stalk that this is done when the moisture content of the stalk is increased to about 30-50%, whereas the comminution of the lamina is usually done at a moisture content of about 18-24%, the exact value depends very much on the type of tobacco, its cultivation and the exact cutting conditions.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved method of treating tobacco leaves in order to obtain a suitable product for use in e.g. Make tobacco, cigarettes and cigars.
We looked at ways to simplify the whole tobacco-making process from leaf to smoker.
We have surprisingly found that it is possible to use a device for the simultaneous comminution of the stalk and the lamina in order to produce a product that is well-suited for incorporation in tobacco products. Although we are aware of the proposal to use a disk mill to reduce the particle size of the stem material, we have no knowledge of using a single mill for simultaneous comminution of the lamina and stalk into a lamina and stem particle mixture which can be used without any further material comminution procedure Manufacture of tobacco products is used.
There are numerous proposals for the processing of tobacco leaves to provide filler for cigarettes and similar tobacco products. In one aspect, the invention provides a method of treating tobacco leaves wherein the tobacco leaf lamina and the tobacco leaf seed are sent together through a sheet crusher. The arrangement of said device and the processing conditions are such that said device ejects a product which is a mixture of laminar flakes and stalk fragments.
In another aspect, the invention provides a tobacco material containing a mixture of laminar particles and stalk particles which is a result of co-processing of the tobacco leaf lamina and the tobacco leaf stalk in a crusher. The lamina and stems supplied to the sheet crusher are contained in a whole sheet as defined below. However, the lamina or part thereof supplied to the device may be previously separated from the stalk adhering thereto.
Similarly, the stalk or part of it supplied to the device may previously be a separate stalk from the lamina adhering thereto. By "whole leaf" we mean whole or highly complete leaves or leaves crushed in a crushing process, such as chopping or cutting, which does not result in a large separation of the lamina or stalk Leaf parts were generally air-dried and subjected to other more or less conventional procedures.
In a further aspect, the invention includes a method for treating tobacco leaves to produce a filler for smoking products, wherein the tobacco passes through a passage as a whole defined by a first and second relatively movable grinding element of the sheet crusher, the parts thereof have the same scope. The sheet is introduced at the introduction port of the passageway and arrives at the outlet port of the passageway which is remote from the introduction port so as to form at the outlet port a filler which is a mixture of laminar particles and stem particles. The outlet opening of the passage is preferably located at the edge of the parts of the same circumference.
For introducing the sheets into the sheet crusher, it is convenient to apply a material feed system by gravity.
In some cases, it may prove advantageous, the sheet crusher low pressure steam of z. B. supply a bar.
The loading of the sheet shredder with sheet material may be assisted by maintaining a reduced air pressure at the product outlet port of the apparatus, such as e.g. B. by the use of a pneumatic lifter or by maintaining an increased air pressure at the product inlet opening of the device.
The feeding of the sheet shredder with sheet material should best be done continuously. It is advantageous if the feed rate is substantially constant.
In another aspect, the invention provides a smoking article filler which is a flowing mixture of laminar particles and stem particles. The shape factor of about 60% or more of the dust-free particles of this mixture is 0.5 or more.
The term "form factor" is defined below.
In another aspect, the invention includes a process for making cigarettes in which the tobacco bale material is comminuted to obtain single whole leaves as defined hereinbefore. The whole sheet is passed through a mill and shredded to produce a product which is a mixture of laminar flakes and stalk fragments. The said mixture is supplied to a cigarette making machine. We have surprisingly found that inventive methods are suitable for whole leaves having a moisture content that is significantly lower than the moisture content normally used for shredding stalks. The moisture content may e.g. be about half of the usual for the comminution of the stem content.
This is of course unexpected since one would have to assume that the energy needed to deflate / fragment / shred the stem - assuming a relatively dry and strong state of the stem - could have resulted in an unacceptably extreme crushing of the associated lamina while it was found that the size of the fragmented lamina can be controlled within acceptable limits. Also, it was not foreseen that the stalk would not break at a low moisture content of about 20% to form an unacceptable material. That is, the size and size distribution of the lamina and stem particles are such that the inventive mixtures thereof for processing in a commercial cigarette making machine, a Molins Mk9 z. B., are suitable. In the conventional method for treating tobacco leaves to produce cigarette filler, the cut lamina, product of the lamina processing line, is mixed with the cut and rolled stem, product of the stem processing line. In an effort to achieve a reasonable degree of consistency in the nature of the filler, attempts have been made to thoroughly mix the two products. However, the jewuiiigen forms of the two products are such that the products do not mix easily. Thus, the loss of quality of the tobacco parts increases as the line of mixture is further pursued. It is therefore a great advantage of the invention and an essential feature of this that in products of the invention, the lamina and stem particles are present in an intimate mixture.
Since the moisture content (stalk fraction) can be relatively low, drying of the product of the sheet crusher is required only to a lesser extent, which can result in significant savings in equipment and energy costs.
A tobacco modifier, e.g. a tobacco casing may be applied to the tobacco leaf material before or after its treatment by a method according to the invention.
Products of the invention may be subjected to a tobacco expansion process. Examples of expansion methods which could be used are contained in United Kingdom Patent Nos. 1484536 and 2176385 of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It has been found that the moisture content of the whole leaf is generally the major factor determining whether on the one hand stalk particles or on the other hand a highly intact stalk is made and, surprisingly, an abrupt transition from one product to another product at some point exact moisture content occurs.
The moisture content at which this transition occurs is hereinafter referred to as "transient moisture content".
-1 'The transient moisture content for the tobacco material to be ground is determined experimentally prior to the manufacturing process. The transient moisture content of a whole leaf of Virginia tobacco milled in a Quester SM11 mill is essentially 18%. For the preparation of a blend of laminar flakes and stalk fragments, an upper limit of 70% was set, above which the sheet material is homogenized and agglomerated in a non-deformable manner. - 1 '
It is best if the upper moisture content of the whole leaves used in the treatment processes according to the invention does not exceed 35%, and more preferably, 30%.
A moisture content of about 30% upon input to the sheet crusher may be appropriate where there is a desire to subject the product to an expansion process in which the mixture of lamina and stalk particles is in contact with a hot gaseous medium.
The tobacco material to be supplied to the sheet crusher can be heated. When heated, for example by microwave irradiation, the transient moisture content decreases.
The sheet material treated by means of a method according to the invention can originate from a single type of tobacco or a mixture of sheet material from a large number of tobacco varieties. If such a single variety makes up only a small portion of the mixture, it may be the case that even if the one variety has a moisture content lower than the transient moisture content, a product of the invention can be made as long as the average moisture content the mixture is above the transient moisture content.
Since the used for carrying out a method according to the invention Blattzerkleinerungsvorrichtung in its variety of threshing and classifying and comprehensive, coordinated Luftstutzen is considerably more compact than a conventional threshing machine, it comes with application of our invention to a saving of investment costs with respect to the use of a conventional threshing machine. It will also save energy costs. In addition, the simplification of the primary sheet processing section in the tobacco factory creates investment and energy cost savings. Thus, using the present invention, significant savings are made throughout the tobacco leaf process, i. H. the process that begins with the tobacco leaf as it comes from the farm, and ends with the manufacture of cigarettes or other tobacco products. It should be noted that the invention not only provides methods for simultaneous comminution of the lamina and stalk to produce a mixture of individual lamina and stalk particles, which does not require a large number of sheet processing machines arranged in series, but moreover processes, where there is no need to return the product for further comminution. In other words, a single pass is easily achieved.
For carrying out the method according to the invention, it is preferable to use sheet shredding devices in which the material flow path extends between and across the opposite sides of the first and second sheet shredding elements. In this case, the tobacco leaves are cut by the tobacco leaves crossing the material flow. Accordingly, at least one of the sheet comminution elements is disk-shaped, in which case it is advantageous if one or each of the disk-shaped elements has generally linear, rib-shaped, radially extending projections on its working surfaces. It would be best if both Blattzerkleinerungselemente are disc-shaped. The Bauer 400 version and the SM11 version of Quester are examples of mills in which two sheet crushers are in the form of discs. When operating the mill 400 of Bauer, the two discs are operated in opposite seals, whereas in the operation of the mill SM11 of Quester one disc is turned while the other is stationary. For the mill 400 of Bauer there are a number of discs, the projections on the working side of each disc have a special shape. Bauer discs marked 325 and 326 are suitable for the practice of the invention.
When operating the disk mills for simultaneous comminution of the lamina and the petiole, the relative rotational speed of the disc, the size of the distance between the discs and the arrangement of the grinding projections on the working surfaces are the decisive factors for the particle size of the product.
Another mill that can be used for purposes of the invention is the so-called beater cross mill, which contains a barrel-shaped housing in which a rotor is mounted, whose shaft is coaxial with the housing. The inner curved surface of the housing is provided with rib-shaped projections which extend parallel to the axis of the housing, while the rotor carries three equiangularly spaced Mesner, which in turn are parallel to the rotor shaft and arranged in the immediate vicinity of the rib-shaped projections of the housing are.
It has been found that the so-called "impact mills", such as hammer mills, are generally not suitable for carrying out the desired milling process.
We have a mill, Robinson pin mill (type designation - splitting device with impact effect called) examined.
This mill includes a rotatable disc and a disc-like stand, both of which are provided with circular arrays of pins perpendicular to the opposite sides of the members. The pins of one element engage those of the other element. The limited knowledge gained with the Robinson pin mill has shown that such a mill could be useful in practicing methods of the invention.
Any aging step may occur with respect to the whole sheet, as previously defined, or the comminuted material produced by the comminution device.
Products of the invention are flowing blends of laminc and petiole particles, which generally will have a repose angle of no more than about 45 ° or even a repose angle of not more than about 35 ° to the horizontal at a normal cigarette manufacturing moisture content of 13%.
For products of the invention, it has also been found that the shape factor of about 60% or more of the dust-free components is 0.5 or more. The shape factor of about 70% or more of the dust-free particles may be 0.5 or more.

The shape that has the highest form factor 1 is the circle.
It has also been found that the Borgwaldt value of the products of the invention is lower than that of comparable conventional tobacco products. However, it has surprisingly been found that the strength of cigarettes whose majority of filler constitutes a product of the invention is comparable to the test cigarettes of conventional tobacco material.
Conveniently, the particle size of the products of the invention is characterized by 50% to 65% of the particles remaining in a sieve whose openings are 1.4mm χ 1.4mm.
Products of the invention are preferably substantially undamaged stem.
The invention provides products which can be supplied to a cigarette manufacturing machine without first being exposed to another particle size reduction process or at most requiring less degree of further particle size reduction. Of course, this does not mean that a lesser amount of coarse fraction and / or a minor portion of dust fraction could not be removed from the product before it is added to the smoking products.
When the products of the invention are added to the cigarettes by charging the cigarette making machine, they are similar to conventional cigarette filler incorporated as such into the cigarettes.
Conventionally cut tobacco used in cigarette manufacturing is a long fiber, non-flowing, white material. For this reason, the supplying device of the cigarette manufacturing machine includes operable carding devices for disentangling the filler. If the products of the invention, when added to the cigarettes, are fluid non-true mixtures of lamina and stalk particles, the carding device, or at least elements thereof, may be dispensed with.
When a blade sizing process according to the invention is carried out in a tobacco growing area, the sheet material may consist of so-called "green leaves", that is to say dried leaves, as it comes from the tobacco farm.
However, if the sheet material is to be treated in a tobacco factory away from the tobacco growing area, it would be appropriate to subject the tobacco to a so-called redrying process. A redrying process is used to ensure that the moisture content of the sheet is low enough to transport and store the sheet material without sacrificing quality.
The use of a whole tobacco leaf as a starting material for the manufacture of filler for smoking products, without the need for a stage for the separation of the lamina / petiole, is economically more advantageous, since it can be assumed that the purchase of whole leaves is cheaper than the purchase of stalks. and laminates of a threshing machine.
Conventional procedures similar to those used with conventionally-treated tobacco may find application in products of the invention. For example, the blends of laminate flakes and stalk fragments prepared in a process according to the invention may be mixed in a well-known manner with other flue gases in any proportion desired, but a product obtained according to the invention should account for the majority of the tobacco products of the resulting mixture. Smoking materials with which products of the invention can be mixed include tobacco, reconstituted tobacco and tobacco substitutes.
Products of the invention belonging to different tobaccos may be mixed.
In the case of the mixture of North American cigarette filler, the following may be mixed: 1. the product which results when the whole Virginia tobacco leaf is grown according to a method of the invention; and 2. the laminafraction of the product which results when all the Burley tobacco, at a moisture content below the transient moisture content, is subjected to a comminution process so that the product consists of a mixture of laminar particles and substantially intact stem lengths.

Steps 1-4,5-7 and 15-17 take place in a tobacco growing region, whereas steps 8-14, 18-22 and 23-25 are carried out in a cigarette factory, the factory generally being very far away from the tobacco growing area.
The process performed at steps 8-14 and 18-22 forms the primary section of the factory's sheet handling, sometimes referred to as the primary processing department (PMD). Steps 8-14 generally form a "petiole" and steps 18-22 form a "laminar stretch".
The term "admixture" at step 23 refers to the possible admixture of other smoking materials in the blending process of the petiole and laminariae products Examples of such additional smoking materials are expanded tobacco and reconstituted tobacco.
The feed material at step 1 consists of whole green tobacco leaves.
The entire process from step 1 to step 25 could be varied in detail, but Figure 1 illustrates a typical conventional treatment of tobacco leaf good for making cigarette filler.

The conditioning steps are carried out in such a way that the elimination of water-extractable components is avoided or substantially avoided.
The feed material at step 26 consists of whole green tobacco leaves.
As can be seen from a comparison of the conventional treatment method shown in Fig. 1 and the treatment method of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the latter method is much simpler.
In the following, details of experiments relating to the invention will be made.
The tobacco leaf stock used in this experiment was a single variety of Canadian hot air dried whole green leaves purchased in molded bales with a moisture content of approximately 18%. The bales were cut into large slices using a slicer as defined above from the "whole leaf", with the majority of the leaves being about 10cm to 20cm in size.
The total sheet material thus obtained was dried to a moisture content of about 26% and then gravity fed to a Quester disc mill (type SM11) in a continuous manner at a rated power of 150 kg / hr. The rotatable disc of the mill was operated at 1000rpm. The rotatable disc and stationary "disc" or plate, which were the standard of such type SM11 articles, contained a form of radially extending linear rib-like projections on their opposed working surfaces.
The mill was operated at a nominal disc spacing of 0.15mm and then increasing the disc pitch from 0.15mm to a nominal disc spacing of 0.9mm. The mill was supplied with steam at a pressure of 1 bar.
The milled product held at the respective slice spacing was an intimate fluid mixture of lamina and petiole particles. All products have been suitably explained as being suitable for the production of cigarettes by means of a conventional cigarette making machine. As expected, the average particle size of the products increased as the disc spacing increased.
Experiment 1 was repeated except that the whole sheet material was dried to a moisture content of 24% and the nominal disk spacings were 0.15, 0.75 and 1.05 mm. The products obtained from the three runs consisted of an intimate, flowing mixture of lamina and petiole particles, all three products being suitably explained for the production of cigarettes by means of a conventional cigarette making machine.
Experiment 3Experiment 3
The third run of Experiment 2, d. H. the one with a nominal wheel spacing of 1.05 mm was repeated but with the whole sheet being dried to a lower value of 21%. The product thus obtained consisted of a mixture of laminar particles and intact stem lengths. Of course, then all the sheet material fed to the mill had a moisture content lower than the transient moisture content prevailing at conditions specific to the experiment.
Experiment 1 was repeated with the whole sheet material dried to a moisture content of 20% and at a feed rate of 180 kg / h. The passes were at a nominal wheel spacing of 0.30mm and 1.2mm. At a nominal disc spacing of 0.30 mm, the product was consistent with the invention and consisted of an intimate, fluid mixture of lamina and petiole particles. However, the product obtained at a nominal disc pitch of 1.2 mm was not in accordance with the invention and contained a mixture of laminar particles and intact stem lengths. A comparison of the results of this experiment and experiment 3 shows that the disk spacing can be critical to the value of the transient moisture content.
The tobacco materials used in this experiment consisted of three red crypted hot-dried Zimbabwean varieties designated A, B and C. These varieties were cut in bales with the cutting device, so you get 15cm-20cm large leaf parts. The whole sheet material thus obtained was dried to a target moisture content of 24% and then ground, sorted, in the Quester mill SM11 at a nominal distance of the discs of 0.3 mm.
The resulting B and C products were acceptable products of the present invention, but the product obtained from Grade A consisted of a blend of laminar particles and full stem lengths.
On closer examination it was found that the stems of the variety A, as present in the leaves, when taken from the bale, are exceedingly thick and have a pronounced woody appearance.
Experiment 5 was repeated. However, all A, B and C sheet goods were mixed before being dried to a planned average moisture content of 24%. After the blended stock was fed to the quester mill, a product of the present invention was formed, even though it contained a miniscule portion (1.2%) of whole undamaged stalk pieces. These stems were easily removed from the product by means of a slurry.
Laminate strips were mixed with the stem in a weight ratio of 80:20. This blend - with an average target moisture content of 24% - was milled in the Quester SM11 mill with a nominal disc pitch of 0.3 mm and a vapor pressure of 1 bar. Thus, a product according to the invention, which is an intimate, flowing mixture of lamina and petiole particles, is formed.
The whole sheet material resulting from the cutting of the bales was mixed with laminates in a ratio of 10:90. This blend of fabrics, with an average target moisture content of 24%, was milled in the Quester SM11 mill with a nominal disc pitch of 0.3 mm and a vapor pressure of 1 bar. The result was a product according to the invention which st St an intimate, flowing mixture of lamina and petiole particles.
The whole sheet material resulting from the cutting of the bales was mixed in a ratio of 60:40. This blend was ground at a target average moisture content of 24% in the Quester SM11 mill with a nominal disc pitch of 0.3 mm and a vapor pressure of 1 bar. The result was a product according to the invention which is an intimate, flowing mixture of lamina and petiole particles.
In Experiments 7, 8 and 9, each of the three materials used, i. H. Strip, petiole and whole leaf, a mixture of the three varieties from Zimbabwe mentioned in Experiment 5.
Three varieties of hot-air tobacco material from the USA, which had been subjected to a redrying process, were cut in batches, the cutting device being set up in such a way that leaf portions of 15-20 cm were produced. The three varieties of whole leaf material thus obtained were mixed before being dried to an average target moisture content of 28%.
The blended stock was fed to a Bauer 400 disc mill with a 3.9 mm disc spacing and a drive speed of 700 rpm for each of the two discs. The discs, a 325-disc and 326-disc, contained on their work surfaces radially extending, linear, rib-shaped projections. The mill includes air jets to assist in transporting the tobacco leaf sheet through the feed apertures located in the first of the two discs. The milled product thus obtained was an intimate, flowing mixture of lamina and petiole particles. The product was found to be suitable for the production of cigarettes by means of a conventional cigarette making machine.
It has been generally found that a higher moisture content of the fed sheet material is required when the Bauer 400 mill is installed than when using the Quester SM11 type mill.
Experiment 11Experiment 11
A sample of 100 g of conventional USA hot air dried cut lamina was screened by means of a screen tester containing a box in which five horizontally extending mesh screens are placed one above the other. The nominal openings of the mesh screens - starting from the top screen downwards - are 1.98mm, 1.40mm, 1.14mm, 0.81mm and 0.53mm. The screen testing apparatus includes reciprocating members for reciprocating the box and the screens therein. The 100 g sample was also spread on the upper sieve. Then, the reciprocating elements were put into operation for 10 minutes. After this period, the material fractions were recovered on the top four sieves. The fraction on the bottom sieve and the fraction that has fallen through the bottom sieve have a fine-grained shape and were discarded.
Partial samples of 0.5 g of the four recovered fractions were distributed on the respective flat surfaces so that each laminate particle is spatially separated from the other particles. Each subsample was then geometrically analyzed using a Joyce-Loebl type 2 analyzer (Magiscan Image Analyzer). The analyzer was used to acquire data on the particle area (two-dimensional), particle length (largest linear dimension) and length of the boundary line.
From the information thus obtained, a bar graph was created which relates the particle shape factor to frequency (Figure 3) and a scatter plot relating the particle length to the shape factor (Figure 5).
A sample of 100 grams of a product of the present invention, obtained by milling US hot air dried whole sheet material at a moisture content of 22% in the Quester mill with a 0.3 mm disk spacing, was subjected to the sieving procedure detailed in Experiment 11. Four subsamples of 0.5g from the top four sieves, d. H. Dust-free samples were geometrically analyzed according to Experiment 11.
6 ausmachen. From the data thus obtained, the form factor / frequency column diagram and the length / shape factor dispersion diagram were created, which make up Figs. 4 and 6, respectively.
In this regard, z. For example, it can be stated that as far as the cut lamina is concerned, about 80% of the fabric on a dust-free basis had a form factor of 0.5 or less, whereas 75% of the product according to the invention had a form factor of 0 on a dust-free basis , 5 or above
The clearly different nature of the two substances can be easily seen from Figures 5 and 6.
Conventionally cut laminate material of a mixture of the types A, B and C mentioned in Experiment 5 with a moisture content of about 12.5% was placed in a laboratory beaker (125 ml) without exposing the material in the beaker to any compaction pressure. The beaker was then inverted on a flat horizontal surface and removed by lifting it vertically. The resulting substance cut lamina is as described in Figure 7. As can be seen, the angle of repose of the fabric is approximately 90 ° to the horizontal.
Experiment 13 was repeated using a product of the invention obtained from a mixture of whole leaves of the varieties A, B and C mentioned in Experiment 5 with a moisture content of approximately 12.5%. The resulting substance is as described in Figure 8. The angle of repose is approximately 33 ° to the horizontal. A comparison of Figures 7 and 8 clearly proves the very different properties of the conventional laminate material and the product of the invention.
Virginia laminate strips, Burley laminates, and Oriental laminates pretreated with a tobacco modifier have been fed together with the stem to a mixing vessel to heat a mixture in which the respective proportions of the four substances are 44%, 23%, 16%. or 17%. The mixture of the four fabrics was fed to a Bauer 400 mill, with a target moisture content of 24%, operated at a disc spacing of 2.7 mm and a disk drive speed of 700 rpm. The product was dried to a target moisture level of 14.5% and then fed to a MolinsMk.9.5 cigarette making machine to make cigarettes whose filler is 100% product.
