Description
The invention relates to a process for the isolation of dian from a formed in the catalyzed by hydrogen chloride condensation of acetone and phenol reaction mixture.
It is known from the reaction mixture, which is formed in the catalyzed by hydrogen chloride condensation of phenol and acetone and consisting essentially of phenol, dian, water and hydrogen chloride to remove the hydrogen chloride by neutralization with sodium hydroxide solution (US-PS 2791616, DD -PS 227697). The resulting sodium chloride is obtained in the form of an aqueous solution which forms a separate phase and can be separated by decantation of the organic components of the reaction mixture. Residual amounts of salt still present in the organic phase can be removed by extraction with water (German Offenlegungsschrift 10, 7205, DD-PS 227697). The further work-up of the mixture is carried out by distillation. The distillates are a phenol-containing water (forerun) and pure phenol (main run). The complete removal of the phenol from the distillation residue is carried out by steam distillation (DD-PS 227697). It is also possible to crystallize out of the neutralized and separated from the salt phase reaction mixture by cooling the dian in the form of its adduct with phenol.
Although these work-up procedures lead to high-quality dian, they have the disadvantage that even with the most careful neutralization in the following work stages, the reaction mixture again assumes an acidic reaction as a result of the formation of new hydrochloric acid. This phenomenon is the more noticeable the lower the synthesis temperature was chosen. The source of hydrochloric acid formation is undoubtedly a by-product formed chloride whose constitution is not known for certain.
The formation of hydrochloric acid is a serious problem for a technical process, since it would require the use of special materials resistant to hydrochloric acid because of the high corrosivity of hydrochloric acid against almost all metallic materials in the stages following neutralization. Otherwise, not only would the life of the apparatus be reduced but also the quality of the dian would be negatively affected by the uptake of metal ions from the equipment materials.
The aim of the invention is to design the process of working up the acidic reaction mixture of the dianine synthesis in such a way that the formation of hydrochloric acid is avoided in the work-up stages following the neutralization and thus the use of conventional metallic apparatus materials is made possible.
The object of the invention is to eliminate the cause of the formation of hydrochloric acid in the work-up stages of the acidic reaction mixture of the hydrogenation-catalyzed synthesis of dianhydride following the neutralization. The object is achieved by a process for isolating dian from a reaction mixture which is formed by condensation of phenol and acetone under the catalytic action of hydrogen chloride, after which reaction the reaction mixture is subjected to the following work-up steps:
a) Neutralisation des Chlorwasserstoffs mit Natronlaugea) neutralization of the hydrogen chloride with sodium hydroxide solution
b) Dekantation des zweiphasigen Gemischsb) Decantation of the biphasic mixture
c) Extraktion der die Hauptmenge Phenol und Dian enthaltenden Phase mit Wasserc) Extraction of the phase containing the major amount of phenol and dian with water
d) Destiilative Entfernung des Wassers und Phenols, gegebenenfalls nach der Abtrennung eines Teils des Dians durch Kühlungskristallisation des Phenol-Dian-Adduktes, aus dem Raffinat der Prozeßstufe c) erfindungsgemäß dadurch gelöst, daß im Anschluß an die Neutralisation (Aufarbeitungsstufe ä)) oder Dekantation (Aufarbeitungsstufe b)) das Reaktionsgemisch 0,5-5 häuf eine Temperatur von 333-363 K erwärmt bzw. auf dieser Temperatur gehalten wird und die sichd) Distillative removal of the water and phenol, optionally after the separation of a portion of the Dians by cooling crystallization of the phenol-dian adduct, from the raffinate of process stage c) according to the invention solved in that following the neutralization (work-up stage ä)) or decantation (Work-up stage b)) the reaction mixture is heated or maintained at a temperature of 333-363 K frequently and is kept at this temperature
. dabei bildende Salzsäure durch Zugabe von Natronlauge beseitigt wird., while forming hydrochloric acid is removed by the addition of sodium hydroxide solution.
The inventive method is applicable for the workup of reaction mixtures which are formed in the catalyzed by hydrogen chloride condensation of acetone and phenol in a molar ratio of 1: 3 to 1:15, preferably from 1: 5 to 1: 8.
The neutralization (step a)) is carried out at a temperature at which the resulting mixture is completely liquid.
The minimum required temperature, which depends on the phenol-acetone ratio in the reaction mixture and the sodium chloride concentration of the aqueous phase, is from 303 to 363 K. The amount of water fed in must be such that a sufficient difference in density between the resulting liquid phases results for the phase separation.
The aftertreatment according to the invention can be carried out both before and after the separation of the liquid phase successes formed during the neutralization. To carry it out, the reaction mixture is heated to a temperature of 333 to 363 K or left at the temperature of the neutralization. The treatment duration for the lower treatment temperatures applies. A longer treatment period is possible, but brings no benefits. Preferred treatment temperatures and times are 353-363 K and 0.5 to 2 hours. The neutralization of the hydrochloric acid formed during the treatment can take place at the end of the treatment or continuously or periodically during the treatment.
The extraction of the organic phase (stage c)) can take place in one or more stages. If low levels of ash are to be achieved in the final product, multi-stage extraction is preferable. The further workup can be done differently in a conventional manner. For example, it is possible to remove water from the raffinate and phenol by distillation and to recover the dian in technical purity as bottom product. If low phenol contents are desired, the last portions of phenol can be removed by superheated steam.
It is also possible to precipitate the dian in the form of its adduct with phenol crystalline from the raffinate by cooling and separate it from the mother liquor. The extraction of the dian from the adduct can be carried out by distillation or by extraction of the phenol by means of water. The work-up of the mother liquor is carried out by distillation.
In a mixture of 6 moles of phenol and 1 mole of acetone are introduced at 303 K 0.59 moles of hydrogen chloride gas and the mixture kept at this temperature for 24 hours. After addition of 264 g of water is heated to 328 K and adjusted by addition of 50% sodium hydroxide solution to pH 5.5.
The temperature increases to 333 K. The reaction product is then heated to 353 K, stirred for 1 hour at this temperature and then cooled again to 333 K. By adding 35 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide solution, the pH, which has fallen in the course of the treatment to 2.0, again adjusted to 5.5. The biphasic reaction mixture is separated in a separatory funnel. The upper phase containing the bulk of phenol and dian is extracted with 383 ml of water.
In this case, a pH of 6.1 is established in the mixture of both phases. After phase separation, another extraction is carried out with 264 ml of water. The pH is 6.2. During phase separation and extraction, the temperature is maintained at 333K.
The organic phase of the 2nd extraction is worked up by distillation. First, under normal pressure up to a bottom temperature of 433 K, the bulk of the water is distilled off together with a little phenol. The distillate has a pH of 5.2. Subsequently, the main amount of phenol is distilled off at a pressure of 8 kPa up to a bubble temperature of 433 K. The residual phenol is removed by treatment with 433 K superheated steam at atmospheric pressure. The technical dian remaining as the bottom product has a crystallization temperature of 429 K and a Hazen color number (30% in methanol) of 102.
