Abstract
The invention relates to a method for crushing compact graphite with the aim of producing a highly dispersed, aqueous graphite suspension used for coating color television picture tubes and other electronic components, thereby avoiding the impurities occurring during the grinding process and destroying the crystal structure of the resulting particles , This is achieved by removing smaller crystalline particles with loosened structures from graphite electrodes located under distilled water with the aid of an electroerosive process and then further comminuting them by means of ultrasonic treatment so that they can be converted into a stable suspension by a suitable surfactant.
Description
Anwendungsgebiet der Erfindung 'Field of application of the invention
The invention relates to a process for producing graphite suspensions, which are preferably used for coating television tubes, other electronic tubes, as lubricants or for producing conductive layers on electronic components. In particular, one uses suspensions of high dispersity (particle size <1 μιη) for applying a strip structure (black-strip process) on the inside of the screen of color television picture tubes.
The prerequisite for the production of a stable graphite suspension is the generation of sufficiently small graphite particles while largely preserving the crystallographic structure and avoiding chemical contamination during the manufacturing process.
So beruht z. The starting material for the production of these finely divided graphite powders are compact, natural or artificial graphite, which is worked up by grinding processes and grinding aids. So z. Example, a method for producing a graphite suspension on the wet grinding in aqueous suspension with addition of sulfite waste liquor and a classification by utilizing the sedimentation (DRP-411 283) or on dry grinding in several stages and subsequent fractionation (SU-146299).
Nachteile der genannten Verfahren sind sowohl der hohe zeitliche- und Energieaufwand für die Feinmahlung als auch der unbefriedigende Korngrößenanteil im interessierenden Bereich unter 1 pm.Disadvantages of the methods mentioned are both the high expenditure of time and energy for the fine grinding and the unsatisfactory particle size fraction in the region of interest below 1 pm.
Smaller particle sizes are added by adding grinding aids such as soda, borax, dextrin and the like. achieved, which are dissolved out of the millbase after completion of the grinding (US-875881). Due to the special mechanical properties of the graphite, an increasing destruction of the crystal lattice accompanied by the reduction of the particle size or a phase transformation to the turbostratischen phase and a reduction of the crystallite size is recorded.
Other methods of making compact primary material suspensions rely on evaporation and subsequent condensation of small quantities of sample by localized momentary energy input, e.g. with aid-focused laser (DE-2351675), wherein the crystallographic structure of the starting material is destroyed and the resulting particles are X-ray amorphous.
The aim of the invention is the preparation of an aqueous, highly dispersed graphite suspension of compact, highly oriented and very pure natural or electrographite by an electroerosive process, which avoid the disadvantages occurring during the grinding process.
The object of the invention is to avoid in the manufacture of the graphite suspension the impurities caused by abrasion on the grinding tools and the destruction caused by the mechanical stress during the grinding process of the crystal structure by using an alternative crushing process and thereby to produce a high purity, colloidal graphite suspension.
According to the invention this is achieved in that constantly replaced by a guided under distilled water electroerosive process graphite particles, the structure of which is loosened by the mechanical action occurring during the spark discharge so far that the resulting graphite suspension is formed by a subsequent treatment with ultrasound.
The method is carried out according to the invention by two electrodes of compact, highly oriented and very pure natural or electrographite, which are connected via a fixed electrical contact and a low-induction lead to a high voltage source so tightly merged under distilled water that ignites a spark discharge independently , The further merging of the electrodes takes place so quickly that the increase in distance between the electrodes due to the spark discharge and the associated erosion on the electrode surface is compensated for. The frequency of the spark discharge is adjusted by the speed of the electrode tracking and is to be chosen so that, depending on the power of the high voltage generator, the complete charging of the spark energy supplying high voltage capacitor is given.
The DC voltage to be applied to the electrodes should be 12 to 15kV and the capacitance of the high voltage capacitor should be about 0.5nF to produce as short a high energy spark discharge as possible. An electrode can be selected stationary and lying at ground potential.
By the specified electrical parameters is achieved that the mechanical effect of the spark over the thermal effect dominates, whereby the evaporation of the graphite is kept low, so as to keep the amorphous content of the removed material minimal. By conducting the process under water, a constant cooling of the electrodes is also ensured. The mechanical effect of the spark causes a loosening of the structure of the removed larger graphite particles, so that their comminution by ultrasonic treatment at 20 to 40kHz and thereby the required Pa'rtikelgröße in the suspension is achieved.
The particular advantage of the preparation of a highly dispersed aqueous graphite suspension according to the invention is that the contamination of the suspension by abrasion of grinding tools or by adding grinding aids is avoided by the use of an electroerosive process under distilled water, and that the destruction of the crystallographic structure, as due to the mechanical stress during the grinding process occurs, is largely excluded.
The separation of remaining in the suspension too large particles is carried out by a filtering process, for. B. by the use of polyethylene core lane filters suitable pore size. To stabilize the suspension suitable surfactants such. As tannin can be used.
Two electrodes of high purity electrographite (10 to 30 ppm Ca, Mg; <10ppm Si; <5ppm Fe) fixed to an adjustable electrode holder are connected via a low-inductance lead to a 12kV high voltage source and a 0.5nF high voltage capacitor , The electrodes are brought together under distilled water until a spark discharge ignites independently. The mechanical effect of the spark leads to a removal of material on the electrode surface and thus to an increase in the distance between the electrodes, which is compensated by tracking with the aid of the adjustable electrode holder. The tracking of the electrodes takes place so fast that the frequency of the spark sequence ensures the charging of the high-voltage capacitor. Depending on the duration of the discharge, the resulting suspension has a solids content of 2 to 10% by weight, which can be increased by drying.
4OkHz weiter zerkleinert. The graphite particles contained in the suspension have a loosened structure and are further comminuted by a 10 minute ultrasonic treatment at 20 or 4OkHz.
By electron microscopic studies it was found that the resulting graphite particles have average dimensions of 0.1 to 1 pm and have a typical graphite particle plate-like shape. The separated in a filter test by a polyethylene core track filter of 2.8 μπ \ pore size residue remains low. The graphitic crystal structure of the particles contained in the suspension could be detected by X-ray analysis.
The stabilization of the suspension produced by addition of 10Gew .-% tannin. Subsequently, a pH of 11 is adjusted by adding concentrated ammonium hydroxide solution (25% strength).
