Description
The invention relates to a method for producing an optical coupling element, that in place of the conventional branch elements a simultaneous output, input and over coupling of light energy allowed and in a simple manner at any point of a gradient or step profile optical waveguide with optical glass jacket can be realized.
Auch hier ist bei mechanisch fixierten bzw. geklebten Verzweigungselementen mit Problemen hinsichtlich der Langzeitstabilität und des Temperaturverhaltens zu rechnen /Tran, D. C. u.a.: „Single — mode fibre directional couplers fabricated by twisting etching techniques"Optical branching elements can be implemented as indirect couplers or direct light cross-coupling between the optical waveguides as direct couplers when using aids and media. Indirect couplers require this by the use of specific aids such. As miniaturistic lenses / US-OS 4,111,522 / or mirror assemblies / US-OS 3977764 /, gradient lenses / DE-OS 2840493 / or mixer elements / DE-OS 4072399 / a very high adjustment effort, so that usually the optical coupler parameters behind which are left behind by direct branching elements and mostly imply thermal and aging problems. When manufacturing direct couplers, bonding, mechanical fixing and fusion welding are used as joining methods / Lochmann, St. u. a .: "Passive optical branching elements" Nachrichtentechnik Elektronik 33 (1983) 11 pp. 444-449 / In this case too, problems with regard to long-term stability and temperature behavior can be expected with mechanically fixed or glued branch elements / Tran, DC et al .: "Single - fashion fiber directional couplers fabricated by twisting etching techniques "
IEEE — J. of Quantum Electronics QE —17(1981) 6, S. 988/. 'IEEE - J. of Quantum Electronics QE -17 (1981) 6, p. 988 /. By contrast, fusion welding as a joining method in the production of couplers excludes such problems and offers the possibility of achieving the lowest coupling losses by eliminating the boundary surfaces and forming continuous geometric transitions within the joining zone. However, this requires a very precise control of the fusion kinetic processes. '
Also come with melt-welded couplers z. B. Taperkopplern always multiple optical fibers for use that must be aligned and held exactly to each other / DE-OS 2937580, DE-OS 2942318 /. The often advantageous use of only one optical waveguide, in which an immediate Lichtaus- or -einkopplung from or into a diode chip, is only in the so-called "bulk" coupler / Castro, CJ: "Passive fiber optic access coupler systems" Electronic Engineering (1980) 4, p.34-36 / or the beam splitter coupler / Weidel, E .: "branching for backscatter measurements" NTG technical reports (1981) p 182 / mentioned in the bulk coupler by microbending, which by pressing a By using such a coupling element to be manufactured with a high additional outlay, on the one hand the minimally achievable geometric dimensions are limited and additional losses are produced. In the beam splitter coupler, which by extremely accurate grinding and Pol One in a capillary o.a. glued optical waveguide and subsequent vapor deposition is produced, the manufacturing effort for a wider commercial use disproportionately high.
The aim of the invention is to provide a method for the economical production of an optical coupling element made of glass-clad optical waveguides, which ensures the production of optical coupling elements also with improved utility properties compared to known melting methods.

According to the invention the object is achieved according to the preamble of claim point 1, characterized in that the means and method steps mentioned in the characterizing part of claim apply. To further improve and embodiment of the invention, the measures defined in the claims 2-6 are provided.
Advantageously, with the method according to the invention by utilizing a Selbstzentriereffekes when welding two opposite, end face touching, axially offset by a minimum amount of optical fiber ends within a narrow range, the substantially light-guiding cores with a defined radius arcuately guided to the optical waveguide surface, where a direct plane coupling a diode chip, optical waveguide or the like can take place.
Advantageously, it is also achieved that a simultaneous input, output and over coupling of light energy on the same coupling element is possible.
Durch den infolge der wirkenden Oberflächenspannung hervorgerufenen Selbstzentrierungseffektes kommt es über einen viskosen Materialfluß zu einem stetigen Ausgleich des axialen Versatzes, wobei überraschenderweise gefunden wurde, daß dieDue to the self-centering effect produced as a result of the acting surface tension, a continuous compensation of the axial offset takes place via a viscous material flow, it being surprisingly found that the
Stirnflächen der Lichtwellenleiter-Kerne an der Glasoberfläche verbleiben.End surfaces of the optical waveguide cores remain on the glass surface.
The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the following example.
Die die Erfindung beschreibenden Abbildungen zeigen:The illustrations describing the invention show:
Figur 1: Stirnflächig berührend axial versetzte Lichtwellenleiter vor dem Schmelzprozeß Figur 2: Verschmolzene Lichtwellenleiter mit angesetztem Diodenchip bzw. eines zusätzlichen Lichtwellenleiters Entsprechend Fig. 1 werden zwei sich gegenüberstehende, um ca. 80/im stirnflächig berührend axial versetzte LichtwellenleiterFIG. 2: Fused optical waveguide with attached diode chip or an additional optical waveguide According to FIG. 1, two optical waveguides, which are in axial contact with each other by approximately 80 °, are contacted
(1) miteinander z. B. by means of glow discharge (2) welded. As a result of the self-centering effect produced as a result of the acting surface tension, a continuous compensation of the axial offset takes place via a viscous material flow, wherein the end faces of the optical waveguide cores surprisingly remain on the glass surface at the same time. Since in this process, as also indicated in Fig. 2, the optical waveguide cores are slightly tapered, are particularly favorable conditions for coupling and decoupling of light energy from laser diode chips 3 and / or planar integrated optical structures before, wherein additionally provided optical waveguide 4 can be.
The light output coupled in and out as well as the light component over-coupling from channel a to b in FIG. 2 can be changed in a particularly simple manner by changing the axial offset while maintaining a minimum offset of approximately 80μηπ depending on the optical waveguide geometry used. In addition, there is the possibility of influencing the radius of curvature and the resulting core cross-section by slightly stretching the optical waveguides and by selecting energy sources which produce a wider viscous zone. An essential advantage of such an arrangement is in addition to the extremely simple feasibility even in the minimum space requirement due to the direct Ankoppelmöglichkeit of transmitting and receiving devices z. B. for the construction of Reperaterstationen.
