Abstract
The invention relates to a method with which the damping properties of optical fibers can be improved. The improvement of the properties of the optical fibers is achieved by shifting the position and height of absorption peaks in the dithering spectrum, thus improving the spectral attenuation properties at the working wavelength. According to the invention, this object is achieved by exposure to ionizing radiation, preferably neutron radiation.
Description
Erfindungsbeschreibung TitelDescription of the invention Title
Method for "improving the spectral attenuation properties of optical fibers.
The invention relates to a method with which damping properties of optical fibers can be improved. The proposed method is possible both during the manufacturing process and afterwards.
For attenuation-limited Lichtleitersysterae the attenuation of the optical fibers used is an essential parameter. The production of low-attenuation light guides is sought by the producers.
The attenuation along an optical fiber is influenced by various factors. A major cause is chemical contamination in the glass. For this purpose, during the manufacturing process, a large number of technological processes for chemical cleaning or to maintain the purity known.
Dies geschieht durch Dissoziationsreaktionen· Mit dem Ersatz der Wasserstoffatome verändert sich Lage und Höhe der Absorptionsspitzen und es entstehen bei zweckmäßiger Arbeitswellenlänge günstigere spektrale Dämfpungen.OH groups which lead to absorption peaks in the spectrum play a special role, for which, in addition to the highest possible purity during production, a process for reducing the effectiveness of the OH groups is known.According to the patent DE 31 04 041, the hydrogen atoms This is done by dissociation reactions · With the replacement of the hydrogen atoms, the position and height of the absorption peaks change and favorable spectral attenuations arise at an appropriate operating wavelength.
Ziel der Erfindung / Object of the invention /
The invention has for its object to improve the spectral attenuation properties of optical fibers. The process to be developed should be suitable both for the production process, as well as for the aftertreatment and require the least possible effort. According to the invention the object is achieved in that the optical fiber is exposed to nuclear radiation. The application of the nuclear reaction represents the essential difference to the previous methods.
The influence of light radiation by nuclear radiation has been extensively studied in connection with use in nuclear power plants and for military installations. Core radiation leads, in case of incorrect application and unfavorable doping, to the deterioration of the damping properties and have been treated with priority from this point of view.

In addition, the suitability as a sensor for nuclear radiation is discussed in various publications. On the other hand, an improvement in the spectral attenuation properties occurs on expedient irradiation.
By precisely metered irradiation with preferably neutrons of suitable energy, the conversion of hydrogen into deuterium is achieved.
This reaction leads to analogous results as were achieved in the patent DE 31 04 041 with much greater effort.
With the proposed method, attenuation reductions of a few percent were achieved for 200 m step index fibers.
