Abstract

Τα απόβλητα αφήνονται σε πρώτο στάδιο να κατακαθίσουν για τουλάχιστον δύο με τρεις μήνες. Στη συνέχεια, αυτά υποβάλλονται σε κροκίδωση, κατά προτίμηση με Ca(OH)2, στη συνέχεια σε υπερ- ή νανοδιήθηση. Στη συνέχεια τα απόβλητα υποβάλλονται σε κατεργασία, κατά προτίμηση εντός αναερόβιου αντιδραστήρα, ώστε να αποδομηθούν μικρομοριακές ουσίες ενδεχομένως ικανές να περάσουν από την ακόλουθη ανάστροφη ώσμωση. Αντί της κατεργασίας εντός του αναερόβιου αντιδραστήρα, τα απόβλητα μπορούν να υποστούν θέρμανση μετά την ανάστροφη ώσμωση -για την εκδίωξη π.χ. μεθανόλης ή αιθανόλης. Τέλος, τα καθαρισμένα απόβλητα υποβάλλονται σε οξείδωση, κατά προτίμηση οξείδωση UV-υπεροξειδίου υδρογόνου. Το προϊόν κατακράτησης της υπερ- ή νανοδιήθησης μπορεί να υποβληθεί σε ανάστροφη ώσμωση υψηλής πίεσης και το προϊόν κατακράτησης της ανάστροφης ώσμωσης υψηλής πίεσης να παχυνθεί εντός λεκάνης εξάτμισης.
