The invention also relates to therapeutic methods using such peptide compounds for the treatment of disorders associated with inadequate or defective production of blood red blood cells. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the peptide compounds of the invention are also provided. The peptides can be in monomeric or dimeric forms and are eventually conjugated to PEG (polyethylene glycol, STM). The peptides have from 1 to 40 residues and include the sequence: LYACHX0GPITX1 VCQPLR, wherein X0 is H or homoserine methyl ether; X1 is W or 1-nal or 2-nal.
