Abstract
This work belongs to the chemical branch, specifically to obtain high purity plaster for its application in the medical-pharmaceutical industry, specifically for the production of plastered bandages. Plaster is obtained from two industrial residuals that provide sulfate and calcium respectively. The source of sulfate is the residual brine from the marine salt industry and calcium, the calcium hydroxide contained in silt that is generated as a byproduct of acetylene production. The essence of the invention consists in mixing the silt with the residual brine in defined proportions to precipitate all the magnesium and sulfate contained therein in order to obtain a solution rich in calcium chloride, which is subsequently mixed with a new amount of residual brine producing a high purity plaster. The procedure allows taking advantage of the potential of both wastes: brine, a liquor rich in soluble sulfates that were concentrated by solar action and silt, a sludge that contains a high concentration of calcium in the form of hydroxide and is produced due to Carbide decomposition during acetylene. Applying this scheme significantly reduces the costs of obtaining a product with high added value. In addition, since the plaster that is synthesized has a high purity, it is indelible to the touch and very white, it constitutes an excellent raw material for the production of hemidrate that can be used in the medical-pharmaceutical industry, specifically for the production of plastered bandages.
