Abstract
Fuel oil compsn. comprises a middle distillate fuel oil (boiling range 120-500 deg.C) contg. 0.0001-0.5 wt.% of an ester, ether or ester/ether of formula - R-O-(A)-O-R' (I) - R and R' are each (i) n-alkyl, (ii) n-alkyl-CO-, (iii) n-alkyl-O-CO-(CH2)n- or (iv) n-alkyl-O-CO-(CH2)n-CO-, the alkyl gp. being linear and contg. 10-30 (pref. 18-22) C atoms; A is a polyoxyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. 100-5000 in which the alkylene group is 1-4C). - Also claimed are (a) an additive concentrate contg. 3-75 wt.% (I), (b) a distillate fuel contg. (I) and an ethylene copolymer (II) or a 30-300C polar nitrogen cpd. (III) as wax crystal growth inhibitor, (c) an additive concentrate contg. (I) together with (II) or (III), and (d), more generally, the use of polyoxyalkylene ethers, esters or ester/ethers contg. at least two 10-30C linear alkyl gps. and a polyoxyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. 100-5000, the alkylene gps. being 1-4C, as flow improvers for distillate fuels. - Cpds. (I) are esp. effective, and can be used as the sole additive, for narrow boiling distillate fuels which are often unresponsive to conventional flow improver additives. The combination of (I) with (II) or (III) is useful for broader boiling distillates.
