Purine derivs. of formula (I) are new Q = CH2OCH2CH2OR' (Q1), H or a leaving gp.; R and R' = H, 1-8C acyl or benzyl; R1 = 1-8C acyl. - Prodn. of 9-(2-hydroxyethoxymethyl guanine (II) is effected by hydrolysing (I; Q = Q1) under mild basic conditions. Pref. hydrolysis is effected with 50% aq. MeNH2 at room temp. or slightly above.
