Abstract
Prepn. of 4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-phenyl butanoic acid of formula (I) comprises: (a) selectively reducing 4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-ketobutanoic acid of formula (II) with a carbonyl cpd. in a polar protic or aprotic solvent at 0-100 deq.C to give 4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl) -4-hydroxybutanoic acid of formula (III); (b) converting (III) to 5-(3,4-dichlorophenyl) -dihydro-2(3H)furanone of formula (IV); and (c) reactinq (IV) with benzene, in an excess of benzene or in a reaction inert organic solvent in the presence of a Friedel-Craft catalyst at 0-100 deq.C. In the formulae Z = 3,4-dichlorophenyl. - (III) and its alkali metal or amine addn. salt and (IV) are new cpds.
