Description

Inflatable bed
Technical Field
The present utility model relates generally to inflatable beds. More particularly, the present utility model relates to an inflatable bed configured to limit inflation or deformation of the inflatable bed during use.
Background
The use of inflatable beds is well known. Many types of inflatable beds are known and are widely used for recreational purposes or daily needs, for example as swimming pool floating beds, portable mattresses or passenger beds for homes.
The inflatable beds originally developed and used were typically single-layered, internally reinforced with a series of ties secured between the top and bottom panels so that the inflatable bed maintained its shape to some extent when a load, typically a person, was placed on the inflatable bed. However, this type of inflatable bed presents a problem in that the side panels are not effectively prevented from expanding. It is known that when a person lies on an inflatable bed, a load is introduced which increases the pressure within the inflatable bed, causing the inflatable bed to expand towards the side walls. Accordingly, there is a need for an improved inflatable bed that better limits the expansion or deformation of the inflatable bed side panels that occurs during inflation or when loading is increased.

Detailed Description
In the following description, various embodiments of the present utility model will be described. For purposes of explanation, specific configurations and details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments. However, it will be apparent to one skilled in the art that the present utility model may be practiced without the specific details. Furthermore, well-known features will be omitted or simplified in order not to obscure the embodiments being described.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, FIG. 1 illustrates an inflatable bed 10 in accordance with an embodiment of the present utility model. The inflatable bed 10 includes a top panel 12 and a spaced-apart bottom panel 14 with at least one side panel extending between the top panel 12 and the bottom panel 14. The top panel 12, bottom panel 14 and side panels are generally connected to one another along their adjacent peripheral edges and define a plenum 16 within the boundaries of the inflatable bed 10.
The side panels of the inflatable bed 10 may be formed from a first side panel 18, a second side panel 20, a third side panel 22, and a fourth side panel 24, each of which is connected to adjacent side panels and to the top panel 12 and bottom panel 14 of the inflatable bed 10 along their common peripheral edges, respectively. Although an inflatable bed is shown in plan view as being quadrilateral, it is contemplated that the inflatable bed may be formed from any desired number of side panels such that the inflatable bed may have only a single side panel, three side panels or more, and thus may have any desired geometric configuration.
The inflatable bed 10 is provided with an inflation valve 26 of known construction, the inflation valve 26 being in fluid communication with the air chamber 16, the inflation valve 26 being formed on the side panels as shown, or on the top panel 12 or the bottom panel 14. Furthermore, although only a single valve is shown, it is contemplated that a greater number of valves may be provided if desired.
The inflatable bed 10 includes at least one drawstring 28, with the ends of the drawstring 28 being connected to the top and bottom panels 12, 14, respectively, and extending within the air chamber 16. A plurality of spaced apart pull straps 28 are provided within the air chamber 16 so that when a load is applied to the top panel 12 or the bottom panel 14, respectively, within the air chamber 16, the top panel 12 and the bottom panel 14 will remain in a slightly fixed position relative to each other to enhance the performance of the inflatable bed 10.
As shown, the inflatable bed 10 may include a first annular support band 30 connecting the top panel 12 and the side panels within the plenum 16 and/or a second annular support band 32 connecting the bottom panel 14 and the side panels. A first annular support band 30 extends along the common peripheral edge of the top panel 12 and side panels and a second annular support band 32 extends along the common peripheral edge of the bottom panel 14 and side panels. The first annular support band 30 cooperates with the top plate 12 to which it is attached to limit outward expansion of the side plate to which the first annular support band 30 is attached to enhance the performance of the inflatable bed 10, and the second annular support band 30 cooperates with the bottom plate 14 to which it is attached to limit outward expansion of the side plate to which the second annular support band 32 is attached to enhance the performance of the inflatable bed 10.
The first annular support band 30 has a first annular edge 34 and a spaced apart second annular edge 36, and a first intermediate portion that is substantially sealed or gas impermeable between the first annular edge 34 and the second annular edge 36. The first annular edge 34 is secured to the top panel 12 along a first weld line 38 and the second annular edge 36 is secured to the side panel along a second weld line 40. The second annular edge 36 is substantially parallel to the common peripheral edge of the top panel 12 and the side panels.
In the first embodiment, the connection of the first annular edge 34 and the first weld line 38 is not continuous, or the first weld line 38 itself is not continuous. The former typically employs a welding process or apparatus that forms a continuous first weld line 38 in the top panel 12, but does not join all of the first annular edge 34 to the top panel 12 at the location where the first weld line 38 is formed, such that at least one of the first annular edge 34 is not secured to the top panel 12 along the first weld line 38, in such a way that at least one first gap 42 is formed between the first annular edge 34 and the top panel 12 (the first weld line 38 is shown in phantom as not being connected to the first annular edge 34 at the dashed line). The latter is a welding process or apparatus that employs a discontinuous first weld line 38 formed in the top panel 12 such that the first annular edge 34 is not joined to the top panel 12 where the first weld line 38 is not formed during welding, in such a manner that at least one first gap 44 is also formed between the first annular edge 34 and the top panel 12. Both of the above methods are generally selected to form the first notch 42 or the first notch 44 only in one product to simplify the production process.
In the second embodiment, the connection between the second annular edge 36 and the second weld line 40 is not continuous, or the second weld line 40 itself is not continuous, so that a second notch (not shown) similar to the first notch 42 or the first notch 44 is formed between the second annular edge 36 and the side plate, specifically referring to the first embodiment. Both embodiments may be used simultaneously, but typically only one is selected in the same product, thereby simplifying the production process flow. It will be appreciated that other processes or apparatus may be used to form the first notch 42 or the first notch 44, such as by securing the first and second annular edges 34, 36 to the top panel 12 or side panel without forming the first and second weld lines 38, 40, and forming the first notch 42 or the first notch 44 between the first annular edge 34 and the top panel 12, and/or forming a second notch similar to the first notch 42 or the first notch 44 between the second annular edge 36 and the side panel.
The first annular support band 30 defines a separate first annular chamber portion 46 within the plenum 16 extending along the common peripheral edge of the top plate 12 and side plates, the first annular chamber portion 46 being in fluid communication with the remainder of the plenum 16 through either the first notch 42 or the second notch 44, i.e., the air flow may flow from the remainder of the plenum 16 into the first annular chamber portion 46. In this manner, air entering from the inflation valve 26 may fill the entire air chamber 16, including the first annular chamber portion 46. The number of first indentations 42 or first indentations 44 is as small as possible, preferably 1 or 2, to allow for faster inflation of first annular chamber portion 46, so that as many connections of first annular edge 34 to top plate 12 as possible remain continuous, thereby reducing the end points of the weld to enhance durability, but the number of first indentations 42 or first indentations 44 may be greater than 2. The size of the first notch 42 or the second notch 44 is as small as possible to allow for a relatively rapid inflation of the first annular chamber portion 46, preferably the length of the portion of the first annular rim 34 that is not connected to the top plate 12 is 0.5cm to 3cm, most preferably 1cm to 2cm, but may be less than 0.5cm or greater than 3cm.
The second annular support band 32 is substantially identical to the first annular support band 30, with the following exceptions: unlike the first annular support band 30, the second annular support band 32 is connected to the bottom panel 14 by its third annular edge 48 along a third weld line 50 and may define a third gap (not shown) between the third annular edge 48 and the bottom panel 14 similar to the first gap 42 or the first gap 44, with its fourth annular edge 52 connected to the side panel along a fourth weld line 54 and may define a fourth gap (not shown) between the fourth annular edge 52 and the side panel similar to the first gap 42 or the first gap 44, the second annular support band 32 defining a separate second annular chamber portion 56 within the plenum 16 extending along a common peripheral edge of the bottom panel 14 and the side panel. The first and second annular support bands 30, 32 are configured such that when the air chamber 16 is full of air, the first intermediate portion of the first annular support band 30, the second intermediate portion of the second annular support band 32 are in tension and the first and second annular support bands 30, 32 limit the side panels from expanding outwardly.
As shown, the second annular edge 36 of the first annular support band 30 and the fourth annular edge 52 of the second annular support band 32 may be spaced apart from each other at the side panels of the inflatable bed 10, or may be overlapping or collinear (not shown).
As indicated above, the top panel 12, bottom panel 14, side panels 18-24, pull straps 28, first loop support strap 30, and second loop support strap 32 may be attached or otherwise secured to one another in a conventional manner using any known heat welding, fusing, or bonding technique, and by using any known adhesive, so long as a durable edge connection is formed therebetween, as well as an edge connection between the top panel 12, bottom panel 14, and side panels, thereby forming a fluid-tight edge connection. In addition, the top panel 12, bottom panel 14, side panels 18-24, pull straps 28, first annular support strap 30, and second annular support strap 32 of the inflatable bed 10 may be formed of any flexible material known to those skilled in the art, including, but not limited to, the use of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and the like.
While several embodiments of the utility model have been disclosed in the foregoing specification, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that many modifications and other embodiments of the utility model will come to mind to which the utility model pertains. Therefore, it is to be understood that the utility model is not to be limited to the specific embodiments disclosed above and that many modifications and other embodiments are intended to be included within the scope of the utility model.
Furthermore, although specific terms are employed herein, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation; and the appearances of the phrases "a," "an," "the" or "the" herein may be representative of one or more, depending on the context in which the phrases are used, and are not intended to limit the scope of the disclosed protection.
