Description

Block-shaped bearing member and bearing tray
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a massive load bearing member in the field of commercial logistics, which is used as a structural component of a pallet or crate, or as a buffer insert for protecting goods, which are transported together with the buffer insert.
Such a block-shaped load bearing member is particularly used as a pallet block or stringer for bearing a pallet, and this will be taken as a typical example of the load bearing member according to the present invention, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
Background
Conventional block-shaped load-bearing members used as pallet blocks or stringers comprise solid wood blocks or blocks of wood fiber sandwiched by wood plates. The use of such blocks allows the pallet to have no significant damping effect on the goods stored or transported on the pallet.
Accordingly, pallets for transporting heavy, expensive and fragile equipment (such as server racks or medical equipment) are often provided with pallet blocks or stringers comprising cushioning material to provide a damping effect to protect the fragile goods from being damaged by dropping and vibration during transport.
Conventional pallet blocks of this type comprise a block of foam material, typically EPE foam, and wooden boards glued to the top and bottom sides of the block to provide stability and the possibility of attaching the block to other parts of the pallet, such as the deck boards, by screws or nails.
The production of these types of block-shaped load-bearing members in the form of pallet blocks or stringers requires labor-intensive joining work by gluing or bolting the parts together. Furthermore, the block's construction allows little freedom in adapting the block's characteristics to different uses, which means that pallets use essentially the same block construction to carry fragile goods of very different weights.
Therefore, there is a gap in the supply of bulk carriers as components of pallets or crates currently available on the market, and new products capable of filling this gap are needed. More specifically, there is a need for a block shaped load bearing member that can be produced at low cost and that is easy to assemble, while at the same time can have individual cushioning characteristics tailored to the particular use of the block shaped load bearing member.
SUMMERY OF THE UTILITY MODEL

The object of the utility model is achieved by providing a massive bearing component. The block-shaped load bearing member includes: a first rigid plate forming at least a portion of a top side of the member; a second rigid plate forming at least a portion of a bottom side of the member; and a cushioning material separating the rigid pieces and configured to be compressed and bring the rigid pieces closer together when the member is applied an increased load, wherein the member includes at least one additional rigid plate embedded into the cushioning material while the cushioning material at least partially surrounds the rigid plates of the member and holds the rigid plates together as a single piece.
More specifically, it has been verified that the design of a block-shaped load bearing member with a cushioning material (wherein the cushioning material separates at least three rigid plates while holding the at least three rigid plates together to form a single block) according to the present invention enables to produce a block-shaped load bearing member with good absorption of forces exerted on the block-shaped load bearing member, while the production costs and assembly time of the block-shaped load bearing member are low, due to the structure of the cushioning material at least partially surrounding and surrounding the rigid plates, such that the product can be molded in one step, thereby eliminating the connecting work, such as gluing, by producing the block-shaped load bearing member. In addition, the cushioning properties/stiffness of the member can be tailored to suit a particular application by simply changing the size and location of the rigid plate members embedded in the cushioning material.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the embedded member is a third rigid plate-like member arranged between the first and second rigid plate-like members in a direction from the top side to the bottom side.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the embedded piece has a through hole penetrated by the cushioning material.
According to another embodiment of the invention, said member comprises at least two of said third rigid plate-like pieces following each other in said direction and being separated at the same time by a cushioning material.

Detailed Description
In fig. 1 to 5, a block-shaped load bearing member 1a,1b according to one embodiment of the invention is shown, and fig. 6 to 7 show such a member as an assembly of load bearing trays 2a,2b according to the invention having two different structures. The block-shaped carrying members 1a,1b and the carrying trays 2a,2b according to the invention will now be described with simultaneous reference to all the figures.
The block-shaped load bearing members 1a,1b (hereinafter "block members") comprise two first rigid plate- like pieces 3a,3b and two second rigid plate- like pieces 4a,4b in the form of elongated flat wooden plates, such as plywood. The block members 1a,1b further comprise a cushioning material 5 in the form of foam, such as EPP or EPE foam, which at least partially surrounds the four pieces 3a,3b, 4a,4b and which keeps them apart but at the same time keeps them together as a single block.
More specifically, the two first rigid plate- like pieces 3a,3b are arranged parallel to each other to each form an upper longitudinal edge and a part of the top side of the block member, and the two second rigid plate- like pieces 4a,4b are arranged parallel to each other to each form a lower longitudinal edge and a part of the bottom side of the block member. As shown in cross-section (fig. 3 and 4), the first and second rigid plate-like pieces thereby form the four corners of the block member, and the rigid plate-like pieces are held together by a single piece of cushioning material 5 that constitutes the main central portion of the block member and extends from the center of the block member to form the top side, bottom side, and central portion of each longitudinal side of the block member. Thus, the first and second rigid plate- like members 3a,3b, 4a,4b and the cushioning material 5 together form the block members 1a,1b having a rectangular parallelepiped outer shape.
The block members 1a,1b further comprise two additional third rigid plate- like pieces 6a,6b in the form of elongated flat wooden plates, such as plywood. Two third rigid plate-like pieces are embedded in the cushioning material 5 and are at least substantially surrounded by the cushioning material 5, such that they are arranged between the first rigid plate- like piece 3a,3b and the second rigid plate- like piece 4a,4b in a direction from the top side to the bottom side, follow each other in said direction while being separated by the cushioning material, and extend parallel to each other and to the first and second rigid plate-like pieces in the longitudinal direction of the block members 1a, 1b.
The third rigid plate- like member 6a,6b has a plurality of through holes 7 each penetrated by the cushioning material 5, which means that these members are held firmly by the cushioning material, while the member and the cushioning material can be formed in one piece, regardless of the width of the third rigid plate-like member. Preferably, each third rigid plate-like member has at least two of said through holes and/or has one or more through holes covering at least 10% of the flat top surface of the third rigid plate-like member.
The block members 1a,1b according to the present invention are particularly useful as structural components of load-bearing pallets which are capable of absorbing energy from impacts applied, such as from a pallet drop, to provide a damping effect for protecting goods located on the pallet. Fig. 6 shows a carrying tray 2a with a tray collar or box 8 arranged thereon, which carrying tray is provided with three block members 1a according to the invention serving as tray stringers. Fig. 7 and 8 show a carrying tray 2b provided with nine block members 1b according to the invention having a shorter length to serve as tray blocks of the tray.
In both cases the top side of the first rigid plate- like members 3a,3b is fixed to the bottom side of the pallet-carrying deck boards 9 by screws or nails which penetrate through the deck boards, the first rigid plate- like members 3a,3b and preferably also the adjacent third rigid plate-like members 6a.
The first rigid plate- like members 3a,3b thus provide attachment surfaces for the deck boards, and also serve to stabilize the block members 1a,1b against the deck boards. The second rigid plate- like members 4a,4b provide a connecting surface that enables the use of the bottom guide 10 on a pallet and also serve to provide support for an underlying surface, such as the ground, on which the pallet is to be placed.
The cushioning material 5 provides shock absorbing cushioning properties to the block members 1a,1b by separating the first and second plate- like members 3a,3b, 4a,4b to maintain them at a fixed distance from each other in a resting state of the block members (see fig. 4), and is configured to be compressed when an increased load is applied to the block members and to enable the rigid members 3a,3b, 4a,4b to be brought closer to each other (see fig. 6), such as if a pallet 2a,2b loaded with a load of 1 to 3 tonnes is dropped or placed on the ground by a forklift.
The design, size and position of the third rigid plate- like member 6a,6b in the mass member may be adjusted to provide the mass member with specific cushioning characteristics, such as rendering the mass member more or less rigid and damping. This can be achieved, for example, by adjusting the thickness of the pieces, the distance between the pieces, i.e. the thickness of the cushioning material between the pieces, and the number and size of the through-holes 7 in the pieces.
In this way, the block members 1a,1b according to the present invention enable the carrying trays 2a,2b to be customized to suit a particular goods and purpose.
Furthermore, the structure of the block members 1a,1b enables the block members to be manufactured quickly and easily. Thus, the cushioning material 5 is simply moulded around and/or against the rigid plate- like members 3a,3b, 4a,4b, 6a,6b, which means that the complete block member can be produced in a single production step without any labour-intensive joining work, such as gluing.
Furthermore, the structure of the block members 1a,1b remains the same regardless of the length of the block members, which enables the production of such members having a greater length (as shown in fig. 1, for example) that can be used as stringers (as shown in fig. 6), or members cut into shorter pieces for use as pallet blocks (as shown in fig. 7 and 8).
The invention is of course not in any way restricted to the embodiments described above, but many possibilities to modifications thereof would be apparent to a person with ordinary skill in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
When an element is referred to as being "connected" or "secured" to another element, it is to be understood that the elements are directly connected to each other or indirectly connected to each other through intervening elements.
The terms "top, bottom, upper, lower, front, rear, horizontal and vertical" used in this disclosure to define the components or parts of the components will be interpreted as valid for the block-shaped load bearing members 1a,1b or load bearing trays 2a,2b placed on a horizontal ground, such as the block-shaped load bearing members and load bearing trays shown in fig. 1 and 7, respectively.
