Detailed Description
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a roof tent assembly 100 is provided as shown in fig. 1. The roof tent assembly includes a cover 102 for mounting to a camping trailer (i.e., a vehicle) and for covering a stored roof tent 102. A movement mechanism 104 is provided for moving the cover 102 to an open configuration to facilitate removal and erection of the roof tent. Advantageously, the movement mechanism 104 lifts the cover 102 to facilitate easy erection and/or storage of the roof tent.
The shroud 102 includes an aerodynamically shaped cover 106 with angled sides. In this manner, the cover 106 defines a rear diffuser for drawing air down to the rear of the camping trailer to relieve the vacuum that would otherwise form. The cover 102 also includes an endless (endless) annular base 108 on which the cover 106 is mounted. The cover 106 is pivotally mounted to the base 108, which in turn is fixedly mounted to the roof of the camping trailer 108. The cover 106 pivots along one side of the camper trailer, while the tent is erected on the opposite side of the camper trailer.
The hard and durable cover 106 includes a body 110 formed of a lightweight molded composite material (e.g., carbon fiber, fiberglass, etc.). The body 110 includes ribs 112 to improve strength. The cover 106 also includes a window 114 that fits to the body 110. The window 114 is located adjacent to and above the bedding support 400 of fig. 4 and 5 to provide light to the tent. The cover 102 also includes an inner fleece liner for lining the body 110.
As best seen in fig. 2 and 3, the moving mechanism 104 is in the form of an elevator for lifting one side of the lid 106. The movement mechanism 104 is mounted within the cover 102 between the cover 106 and the base 108 and includes a pair of hinged arms at opposite ends of the assembly 100. The movement mechanism 104 includes an actuator 200 located between upper and lower portions 202a, 202b of each arm. The actuator 200 extends up to the proximal side of the elbow joint of the arm. The moving mechanism may be electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically actuated.
The roof tent is sealed to the cover 102 by its canvas being received in the cover and base recess 204, with the cover recess 204 being above the window 114 in use. The base 108 includes a pair of lips 206 defining an annular groove 208. When the lid 102 is closed, the lid 106 and the base 108 together form a seal 210. In this regard, the base 108 includes a rubber seal that fits within the aluminum extrusion to inhibit the ingress of dust and water.
The base 108 also includes an LED light strip 212 inserted in a cavity with a light diffusing cover. The lid 106 and the base 108 are coupled together on one side by a hinge 214.
Fig. 4 and 5 show a retractable bedding support 400 for forming a bedding for a roof tent and which may be erected independently of the roof tent. Advantageously, the bedding support 400 may be foldably retracted as needed to make more space within the erected tent when forming bedding for a roof tent, and may be unfolded when forming bedding for a roof tent.
The articulated bedding support 400 includes a sleeper platform 402 coupled to a pair of flexible joints 404. The bedding support 400 also includes a pair of support arms 406 coupled to the respective flexible joints 404.
Each flexible joint includes a pivotally coupled rod member 408 to enable angular movement of the sleeper platform 402 by at least 180 degrees. The pivot location 410 on the member 408 is adjusted to change the angular movement of the sleeper platform 402.
The bedding support 400 further comprises a damper 412 in the form of a plunger (ram) or gas strut to damp the movement of the bedding support 402. In particular, the dampener 412 is arranged to resist violent downward movement of the sleeper platform 402 from the vertical configuration to the horizontal configuration. The bedding support 400 also includes one or more electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators for actuating the respective flexible joints 402 to move the bedding support 402.
The bedding support 400 further includes a retractable step 414 pivotally coupled to the sleeper platform 402. The steps 414 pivot to be coplanar with the sleeper platform 402, effectively extending the platform 402. The steps 414 move angularly up and down in a plane perpendicular to the plane of angular movement of the sleeper platform 402.
Fig. 5a to 5c show the retraction process of the bedding support 400. The sleeper platform 402 does not pivot relative to the support arms 406, but rather extends angularly as it deploys, with the virtual hinge point moving outwardly away from the support arms 406, and vice versa.
As best seen in fig. 5a, when extended, the sleeper platform 402 is positioned parallel to the support arms 406, but not coplanar with the support arms 406, to provide a suitable height differential that is adjustable based on the pivotal adjustment of the members 408.
As best seen in fig. 5c, the rod member 408 is compactly arranged when the bedding support 400 is retracted. The edges of the members 408 engage each other upon retraction to provide a strong articulation in the direction of retraction. The sleeper platform 402 is kept separate from the support arms 406 by means of flexible joints 404.
A method for assembling the roof tent will now be briefly described.
Initially, the roof tent is stored in a hood 102 mounted on the roof of the camping trailer. As shown in fig. 2c, the lid 106 is closed.
Next, as shown in fig. 3c, the moving mechanism 104 lifts the cover 106 and withdraws the compressed tent from the enclosure 102 for easy erection by the camper. The tent includes a magnetic coupler for coupling the tent to the camping trailer. The tent is also sealed in the base and cover recess 204 (fig. 2 d).
Next, once the enclosure 102 is opened, the bow (bow) or pole of the assembly 100 is deployed to support the erected tent. The cover 102 remains open while the tent is erected. The camping trailer has a kitchen in a position adjacent to the bedding support 400, and the kitchen is covered by an erected roof tent. Typically, the bedding support 400 is retracted so that access to the kitchen in the tent is available or more space is provided in the tent.
When sleeping, the elevated bedding support 400 is unfolded in the erected tent without affecting the tent, and the mattress is placed on the sleeping platform 402. The tent includes a magnetic coupler for coupling the tent to the bedding support.
The reverse steps may be performed to easily restock the tent in the enclosure 102 for transport.
Those skilled in the art will appreciate that many embodiments and variations may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
The tent assembly may be used on any vehicle (e.g., 4WD) to provide an elevated bed.
The retractable bedding support may be suitable for other applications, such as retractable platforms, walls, bases, roofs, doors, or other similar panels.
