Detailed Description
The present disclosure relates to a portable cot 10. The cot includes a flexible support member 12 and a frame 14, the frame 14 supporting the flexible support member in a suspended position above the ground or floor. The frame 14 includes a plurality of rib members 16 and longitudinal support members 18. Each rib member extends across the width of the cot. The rib members are spaced apart along the longitudinal length of the cot.
Each rib member includes a first portion 20, the first portion 20 being pivotally connected to a second portion 22 with a pivot 24 and a link 26. Each rib member also includes a slide lock 28 which prevents pivotal movement of the second portion of the rib member relative to the first portion of the rib member. The rib member first portion 20 has an upright region 30 and a horizontal region 32. The rib member second portion 22 has an upstanding region 36 and a horizontal region 38. The horizontal region 32 of the rib member first portion has a pivotal connection 24 from the link 26 to the horizontal region 38 of the rib member second portion. On the rib member second portion 22, the pivot connection 24 may be adjacent the transition from the horizontal region 38 of the rib member second portion to the rib member second portion upright region 36. On the rib member first portion, the link 26 and the pivot connection 24 may be adjacent the distal end of the horizontal region 32 of the rib member first portion.
The pivotal connection allows the rib member second portion to pivot relative to the rib member first portion between a retracted position in which the horizontal extent of the second portion is angularly remote from the horizontal extent of the first portion and the distal end of the upstanding extent of the first portion is a first distance from the distal end of the upstanding extent of the second portion, and an extended position in which the horizontal extent of the first portion is parallel and adjacent to the horizontal extent of the second portion and the distal end of the upstanding extent of the first portion is a second distance from the distal end of the upstanding extent of the second portion, wherein the second distance is greater than the first distance.
The frame further comprises first and second longitudinal support members 18. The first and second longitudinal support members are releasably engaged with the distal end of the upstanding region of each rib member. The distal ends of the respective upstanding areas of the rib member first portion and the rib member second portion allow the longitudinal support members to be spaced apart when the cot is disposed in a normal configuration in which the rib member is in the extended position. The distal ends of the upstanding areas of the rib member first portion and the rib member second portion, respectively, allow the longitudinal support members to be spaced apart a distance less than in the extended position when the cot is disposed in the collapsed configuration in which the rib member is in the collapsed position.
The flexible support member may have pockets on opposite edge sides thereof that receive the longitudinal support members therein. A cut-out 50 may be provided on the edge side of the flexible support member to allow access to the longitudinal support member through the cut-out.
The distal end of the upright of each rib member may have a clip 60. The clip may allow the distal end of the upright to be releasably engaged with the longitudinal support member. The clip may extend through a cut-out in the pliable member to allow a distal end of the upstanding portion of each rib member to releasably engage with a respective longitudinal support member. The clip may be sized to engage the longitudinal support member. The longitudinal support member may have a circular cross-section and may be a rod. The clamp may have a C-shaped cross-section to allow the rod to be received in an inner diameter portion of the C-shaped clamp.
The distal end of the upstanding region of the first portion of the rib member may be provided with a clip and the distal end of the upstanding region of the second portion of the rib member may be provided with a similarly configured clip which engages the opposed longitudinal support member.
In arranging the cot, the pliable member may be arranged longitudinally with respect to the frame. The longitudinal support bar may be inserted into a pocket on the edge side edges of the flexible support member. The plurality of rib members may be arranged in a longitudinally spaced arrangement in the general area to engage the longitudinal support member. The upstanding region of the first portion of the rib member may extend through the cut-out in the flexible member such that the clip engages the longitudinal support bar in the cut-out. This step may be repeated for each rib member along the length of the cot.
The distal end of the upstanding region of the second portion of the rib member can then extend through the cut-out in the pliable member with the rib member in the retracted position so that the clip engages the opposed longitudinal support bar in the cut-out. This step may be repeated for each rib member along the length of the cot.
The rib member may then be positioned in the extended position by pivoting the second portion of the rib member relative to the first portion. This moves the clips on the distal ends of the respective first and second portions away from each other and tightens the flexible member as the longitudinal support members in the sleeve on the edge side of the flexible support member move away from each other. The rib member second portion is pivoted relative to the rib member first portion such that the horizontal area of the rib member second portion is brought adjacent to the horizontal area of the rib member first portion. Where the horizontal regions of the first and second portions of the rib members are adjacent one another, the clips may be slid into place to lock the rib members together and to keep the flexible members drawn tightly outwardly, thereby providing support for the cot. Any force applied to the flexible support surface that tends to move the clips located on the distal ends of the upstanding regions of the first and second portions of the rib member towards each other can be counteracted by the clips and the rib member resting on the ground. To fold the cot for storage, the reverse process may be performed.
