Abstract
The present invention relates to an end cap for an open end of a filter housing, the end cap comprising a disc-shaped portion having a top surface, a bottom surface, and a central opening extending through the top surface and the bottom surface, the disc-shaped portion having a hollow cylindrical portion extending from the top surface; the cylindrical portion having a bottom end, a top end, and an outer sidewall, the bottom end connected to the top surface and in communication with the central opening; the exterior sidewall includes at least one group of a plurality of outwardly extending rounded structures.

Technical Field
The utility model relates to an end cover for the open end of filter housing.
Background
The end cap may be attached to the filter housing such that a filter assembly (also referred to as a filter device) may be attached for further use, e.g., for connection to a manifold. However, there is a need for improved end caps.
SUMMERY OF THE UTILITY MODEL
The present invention improves upon at least some of the shortcomings of the background art. Those advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description.
An embodiment of the utility model provides an end cover for filter housing's open end, the end cover includes:
a dished portion having a top surface, a bottom surface, and a central opening extending through the top and bottom surfaces, the dished portion having a hollow cylindrical portion extending from the top surface;
the cylindrical portion having a bottom end, a top end, and an outer sidewall, the bottom end connected to the top surface and in communication with the central opening;
the exterior sidewall includes at least one group of a plurality of outwardly extending rounded structures.
In one embodiment of an end cap for an open end of a filter housing, the end cap includes two pluralities of outwardly extending rounded structures arranged about 180 ° apart on the exterior sidewall.
In one embodiment of an end cap for an open end of a filter housing, the plurality of outwardly extending radius structures are arranged at an angle relative to an axis a-a of the end cap.
In one embodiment of the end cap for the open end of the filter housing, the top end of the cylindrical portion contains a groove in the outer sidewall.
In one embodiment of the end cap for the open end of the filter housing, the end cap further comprises a seal disposed in the groove.
In one embodiment of the end cap for the open end of the filter housing, the set of the plurality of outwardly extending radius structures comprises at least three outwardly extending radius structures.

Detailed Description
According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided an end cap for an open end of a filter housing, the end cap comprising a disc-shaped portion having a top surface, a bottom surface, and a central opening extending through the top and bottom surfaces, the disc-shaped portion having a hollow cylindrical portion extending from the top surface; the cylindrical portion having a bottom end connected to the top surface and communicating with the central opening, a top end, and an outer sidewall; the outer sidewall includes at least one plurality of outwardly extending rounded features.
In a preferred embodiment, the plurality of outwardly extending radiused structures are linearly arranged at an angle relative to the axis A-A of the end cap.
In an exemplary embodiment, the end cap includes two pluralities of outwardly extending rounded structures arranged about 180 ° apart on the outer sidewall.
In a preferred embodiment, the top end of the cylindrical portion contains a groove in the outer sidewall, and the end cap may further include a seal disposed in the groove.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the end cap 100 includes a disc-shaped portion 1 having a top surface 11, a bottom surface 12, an axis a-a from the top surface to the bottom surface, and a central opening 10 extending through the top and bottom surfaces, the disc-shaped portion having a hollow cylindrical portion 20 extending from the top surface; the cylindrical portion has a bottom end 22 connected to the top surface and communicating with the central opening, a top end 21, and an outer sidewall 24; the exterior sidewall includes at least one grouping 50 of a plurality of outwardly extending rounded structures 50'. Typically, the rounded structure is annular or elliptical, or is generally annular or generally elliptical.
In a preferred embodiment, the top end 21 of the cylindrical portion contains a groove 25 in the outer sidewall, and as shown in fig. 7, the end cap may further include a seal 75 (shown as an O-ring) disposed in the groove.
Various seals are suitable for use in embodiments of the present invention, preferably the seal comprises an O-ring.
Preferably, as shown in FIG. 4, the plurality of outwardly extending radiused structures are linearly arranged at an angle relative to the central axis of the end cap. In some embodiments, this angle improves the operation of screwing the end cap (which is attached to the filter housing of the filter assembly) into the mating groove of the manifold, and in those embodiments where the end cap contains a group of two sets of rounded structures and the top end of the cylindrical portion contains a groove in the outer sidewall and a seal disposed in the groove, when the end cap is rotated, this angle improves the efficiency of pulling the end cap into the manifold and the seal is compressed and seated into the mating sealing surface of the manifold.
In the illustrated embodiment, the end cap contains two sets 50A, 50B of a plurality of outwardly extending rounded structures arranged 180 ° apart. Typically, each set comprises a grouping of at least three outwardly extending rounded structures, and in the illustrated embodiment, each set comprises five outwardly extending rounded structures 51, 52, 53, 54, 55.
Typically, the bottom surface of the end cap may be thermally bonded to one or more of: a filter housing, a shroud, a core, and/or a filter pack or filter element.
A variety of materials are suitable for use in manufacturing end caps according to embodiments of the present invention. In a preferred embodiment, the end cap is polypropylene.
As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, the diameter, thickness and profile of the disc-shaped portion of the open end cap can be varied to receive different filter diameters or to vary according to the requirements of the manufacturing operation (e.g., end-capping to assemble the filter element). The diameter of the cylindrical portion may be varied to fit different manifold outlets and to receive different sized seals. The groups of outwardly extending radiused structures, each group arranged to form part of the threads, can be adjusted by varying the size, shape, number and arrangement of the structures to fit different manifold outlet configurations. The open end cap may be attached to a plenum connecting the outlets of the plurality of filters to the open end cap.

Claims (6)
1. An end cap for an open end of a filter housing, the end cap comprising:
a dished portion having a top surface, a bottom surface, and a central opening extending through the top and bottom surfaces, the dished portion having a hollow cylindrical portion extending from the top surface;
the cylindrical portion having a bottom end, a top end, and an outer sidewall, the bottom end connected to the top surface and in communication with the central opening;
the exterior sidewall includes at least one group of a plurality of outwardly extending rounded structures.
2. The end cap for an open end of a filter housing of claim 1, wherein said end cap comprises two pluralities of outwardly extending rounded structures arranged about 180 ° apart on said exterior sidewall.
3. The end cap for an open end of a filter housing of claim 1 or 2, wherein the plurality of outwardly extending radius structures are arranged at an angle relative to an axis a-a of the end cap.
4. An open-ended end cap for a filter housing according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the top end of the cylindrical portion comprises a groove in the outer side wall.
5. The end cap for an open end of a filter housing of claim 4, further comprising a seal disposed in the groove.
6. The end cap for an open end of a filter housing of claim 1 or 2, wherein the set of the plurality of outwardly extending rounded structures comprises at least three outwardly extending rounded structures.
