The staple former of claim 1, wherein the first extension further comprises a third tab disposed between the first tab and the second tab, the third tab having a width equal to the maximum width of the first tab and a width equal to the maximum width of the second tab; the second extension further comprises a sixth tab disposed between the fourth tab and the fifth tab, the sixth tab having a width equal to a maximum width of the fourth tab and a width equal to a maximum width of the fifth tab; wherein a third opening is formed between the third protrusion and the sixth protrusion.
3. The staple former of claim 2, wherein the first and second extensions are each trapezoidal shaped bumps.
4. the staple former of claim 2, wherein a spacing between the third and sixth tabs in the transverse direction is greater than or equal to 0.2 millimeters.
5. The staple former of claim 1, wherein a spacing between the first and fourth tabs in the transverse direction is greater than or equal to 0.2 millimeters and a spacing between the first and fourth tabs is less than or equal to 0.9 millimeters.
6. The staple former of claim 1, wherein a spacing between the second and fifth tabs in the transverse direction is greater than or equal to 0.2 millimeters and a spacing between the second and fifth tabs is less than or equal to 0.9 millimeters.
7. The staple forming assembly of claim 1, wherein the first extension of the first and second tabs is a triangular or arcuate projection and the second extension of the fourth and fifth tabs is a triangular or arcuate projection.
8. The staple former of claim 2, wherein the first and fourth tabs each have a same first length, the second and fifth tabs each have a same second length, and the third and sixth tabs each have a same third length in the lengthwise extension of the body, wherein the sum of the first and second lengths is less than or equal to the third length.
9. The staple former of claim 1, wherein the forming portion further comprises a forming surface that is a bottom surface of the forming groove.
10. The staple former of claim 1, wherein the body includes two sides and a recess between the two sides, the contoured surfaces of the sides including a first surface and a second surface, the first surface being closer to the recess than the second surface, the first surface being raised from the second surface.
11. A surgical stapler comprising a staple former and a cartridge, said cartridge accommodating staples and said staple former bending-forming said staples pushed out from said cartridge, characterized in that said staple former is a staple former as claimed in any one of claims 1-10.
