外瓶的容积比内瓶大许多，适宜给较大的小孩喂奶或喂水，内瓶的容积较小，适合给较小的小孩喂水、喂奶，也适合给小孩喂药等，在外瓶和内瓶之间构成一个隔热保温的空腔，可以起到隔热及保温作用，可以往外瓶内加适量的热水或凉水，然后将内瓶放入，对内瓶内的液体起到加热、保温或降温作用。
