避雷器在运行过程中，尤其是户外杆塔上固定式避雷器，其高压端会承受一定的电缆拉力，遇到大风时或拉力过大长时间运行时，导线的拉力可能会导致避雷器损坏，导致系统单相接地，造成电力系统运行故障，为了解决这一问题，在避雷器旁边并列装置一只支柱绝缘子，高压导线先与支柱绝缘子连接，再通过跳线连接至避雷器的高压进线端，这样将导线的拉力通过绝缘支柱来分担，确保了避雷器安全可靠的运行。但这种方式结构复杂、占用空间大、安装繁琐。
