人们在晾晒衣物时，都是把衣服用衣架撑起，挂在晾衣杆或晾衣绳上，为方便挂放和摘取衣架，衣架上的衣钩多为开放式的弧形，这样挂在晾衣杆上的衣架被风一吹很容易自晾衣杆或晾衣绳脱落下来，使干净的衣服落在地上或被风刮走，对衣物产生极大的损坏，同时浪费了洗衣服的时间和水；另外，晾晒多件衣物时，衣架很容易向晾衣杆或晾衣绳的中部靠拢，使多件衣物贴合在一起，延长了晾晒的时间。

使用时，将衣物搭在挂衣架3上，通过拨动挂钩1的拨叉使挂钩1张开，挂在晾衣杆或晾衣绳上，放开拨叉，使挂钩1闭合，避免挂衣架3从挂钩1的开口处脱落；同时防滑垫2与晾衣杆或晾衣绳接触，增大了摩擦力，可防止衣架在晾衣杆或晾衣绳上滑动，以避免多件衣服贴合、并拢在一起。
