现有的沙发大多以木材作为基座、再粘合海绵而成，这种沙发需要大量的木材，给森林资源造成了极大的损坏。
另一方面，用木材为基座做成的沙发，分拆和组装比较困难，容易损坏沙发的结构，同时，也给沙发的存储和运输带来了极大的不便。
再者，用木材做成的沙发基座，所用的木板一般比较薄，承受重量较大的人或物体时，容易导致木板变形或折断，这样将导致整个沙发报废。
