在等离子体显示设备中,放电单元形成于其上形成障壁的下基板和面对下基板的上基板之间,而当放电单元中的惰性气体由于高频电压而放电时所产生的真空紫外线(UVU)与荧光体碰撞以产生光,于是图像得以显示。
图1所示为交流(AC)表面放电等离子体显示面板(PDP)的放电单元的一般结构。
形成上基板10和下基板18的两片平面玻璃覆有若干必需的层,且彼此附着以获得PDP。上基板10面对下基板18。扫描电极Y和维持电极Z形成在上基板10上,而寻址电极X形成在下基板18上。
扫描电极Y和维持电极Z由透明电极12Y和12Z以及其线宽度比透明电极的线宽度小的金属汇流电极13Y和13Z组成。上电介质层14和保护层16层叠在上基板10上,以覆盖扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。在等离子体放电期间产生的壁电荷累积在上电介质层14上。保护层16防止上电介质层14被等离子体放电期间产生的溅射损坏,并改进了二次电子的发射效率。

图2所示为时间分割驱动PDP使得一帧被分割成多个子场的方法。为了实现图像的灰度级,PDP是时间分割驱动的,使得一帧被分割成具有不同发射次数的多个子场。每个子场分割成:用于初始化整个屏幕的复位时段、用于选择扫描线以根据所选的扫描线来选择放电单元的寻址时段、以及用于根据放电次数来实现灰度级的维持时段。
例如,当图像要显示为256灰度级时,对应于1/60秒的一个帧时段(16.67ms)如图2所示分割成8个子场SF1到SF8。当使用这8个子场来显示灰度级时,8个子场SF1到SF8中每一个分割成复位时段、寻址时段、和维持时段。
同时,初始化时段和寻址时段在每一子场中是相同的,维持时段和在每一子场中的维持时段指定的维持脉冲的数目以2n(n=0,1,2,3,4,5,6和7)的比率增加。由于用于根据放电次数来实现灰度级以便显示256灰度级的维持时段随每一子场而不同,因此,每一子场可显示图像的灰度级,且图像帧通过子场的组合来显示。
图3所示为施加在维持时段中的一个维持脉冲时段的形状。一个维持脉冲时段由能量恢复上时间(ER_up time)、维持电压维持时间(Sus_up time)以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down time)组成。
如上所述,在常规技术中,在一个维持时段中施加的维持脉冲的形状,即,施加的维持脉冲的能量恢复上时间、能量恢复下时间以及维持电压维持时间是固定的。
发明内容
为了解决常规技术的问题,本发明已努力以提供一种等离子体显示设备,其中维持脉冲被适应性地施加在维持时段中。
根据本发明的一种等离子体显示设备包括第一基板、第二基板、形成在第一基板上的第一和第二电极、以及用于将维持脉冲施加到第一和第二电极的至少一个的维持驱动器。施加到第一和第二电极的至少一个的维持脉冲在第一和最后脉冲之间具有有两个或更多形状的中间脉冲。

脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)、维持电压维持时间以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)优选地由能量恢复速率、若干表示的灰度级、维持电压裕度、温度、要显示的图像辉度以及等离子体显示设备所需的平均图象电平(APL)中的至少一个来确定。中间脉冲优选地是具有两个或更多重复的形状的一系列多个脉冲。

现在将参考附图详细说明根据本发明用于使用具有适应性形状的维持脉冲来驱动等离子体显示面板(PDP)的等离子体显示设备的优选实施例。
根据本发明的等离子体显示设备不限于本发明的说明书中所述的实施例,而可存在多个实施例。
将参考图4到11详细说明本发明的实施例。
为了在PDP上显示图像,一帧被分割成多个子场以执行时间分割驱动。每个子场由由于初始化放电单元的复位时段、用于根据图像数据确定点亮单元(on cell)的寻址时段、以及用于通过维持放电来显示图像的维持时段组成。
维持脉冲在维持时段中被交替施加到包括在PDP中的扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。维持放电产生在扫描电极Y和维持电极Z之间,相应于维持脉冲被施加以显示灰度级。
通常,维持脉冲包括从低电势维持电压上升到高电势维持电压的能量恢复上部分(ER_up)、维持高电势维持电压的维持电压上部分(Sus_up)、以及从高电势维持电压下降到低电势维持电压的能量恢复下部分(ER_down)。

在维持时段中交替施加于扫描电极Y或维持电极Z的脉冲之中,除了第一脉冲和最终脉冲之外的其他中间脉冲通常具有相同的形状。在根据本发明的等离子体显示设备中,使用上述方法,使得维持脉冲之中的中间脉冲具有两个或更多形状。
图5A所示为在维持时段中交替施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z的中间脉冲所具有的两个或更多形状的第一实施例。每个脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)是变化的,以便获得3个不同的脉冲形状。
当能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)增加时,用于给PDP提供维持脉冲以驱动PDP的维持驱动器的能量恢复速率增加。但是,维持电压裕度减小,且所显示的图像的亮度特性恶化。相反,当能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)减少时,亮度特性通过维持放电得以改善。但是能量恢复速率恶化。
因此,优选的是在一个子场中施加的维持脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)根据能量恢复速率、等离子体设备所需的亮度特性、以及维持电压裕度而适应性地改变,使得具有两个或更多形状的中间脉冲被交替施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。
当能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)太短时,由能量恢复引起的维持脉冲的电压的增加太小,使得维持电压在能量恢复之后被施加时产生电势中的突变。因此,维持脉冲的形状立刻上升,使得维持脉冲的电压比维持电压高。因为当能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)太长时,可通过能量恢复提供给面板的能量是有限的,所以不需要使能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)太长。通常,因为能量恢复在800ns内完成,能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)优选范围从350ns到800ns。
如图5A所示具有不同形状的脉冲Sus1、Sus2和Sus3之中,能量恢复上时间ER_up时间短的脉冲Sus1保证足够的维持电压裕度并确保图像的好的亮度特性。但是,能量恢复速率恶化。能量恢复上时间ER_up时间长的脉冲Sus2保证了高的能量恢复速率。但是,维持电压裕度和图像的亮度特性恶化。因此,根据等离子体显示设备的当前状态、根据等离子体显示设备所需的能量恢复速率、维持电压裕度和图像亮度特性,如图5A所示具有三个形状的脉冲Sus1、Sus2和Sus3互相组合,以获得维持脉冲,使得所获得的维持脉冲被施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。
图6所示为施加到PDP的维持脉冲的第一实施例的时序图。相同的维持脉冲施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。如图6所示,在如图5A所示具有三个形状的脉冲之中,具有能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)A1的脉冲Sus1和具有能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)B1的脉冲Sus2被重复施加。
当施加脉冲Sus1时,因为能量恢复上时间A1短,有可能改进亮度特性。当施加脉冲Sus2时,因为能量恢复上时间B1长,有可能改进能量恢复速率。因此,当脉冲Sus1和Sus2被重复施加时,有可能改进能量恢复速率并保证适当的亮度。
如上所述,相应于具有两个或更多不同形状的脉冲被重复施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z,有可能同时改进PDP的亮度特性和能量恢复速率。
图7所示为施加到PDP的维持脉冲的第二实施例的时序图。不同的维持脉冲施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。即,具有能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)A的脉冲Sus1和具有能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)B的脉冲Sus2被顺序地施加于扫描电极Y。脉冲Sus1、脉冲Sus2和具有能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)C的脉冲Sus3被顺序地施加于维持电极Z。
如上所述,当具有中等长度的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)的脉冲Sus3在施加脉冲Sus1和Sus2之后被施加时,有可能保证维持电压裕度。即,因为脉冲Sus2的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)长,使得维持电压裕度不足以通过强放电来产生闪烁,所以施加了具有比脉冲Sus2的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)短的中等长度的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)的脉冲Sus3,以保证维持电压裕度并防止产生闪烁。
图8所示为施加到PDP的维持脉冲的第三实施例的时序图。具有两个或更多不同形状的脉冲组合被重复施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。如图8所示,脉冲Sus1、脉冲Sus2和脉冲Sus3的顺序组合被重复施加于扫描电极Y或维持电极Z。
如上所述,根据面板的特性,使用了能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)短的脉冲和能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)长的脉冲,并可使用具有介于以上两个脉冲的能量恢复上时间之间的中等长度的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)的脉冲。具有中等长度的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)的脉冲被添加到维持脉冲,以便有可能恢复由于能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)增加而恶化的维持电压裕度。
图5B所示为在维持时段中交替施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z的两个或更多形状的中间脉冲的第二实施例。每个脉冲的维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)是变化的,以便获得3个不同的脉冲形状。
维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)优选从400ns到3μs。因为在维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)期间施加了高电势维持电压以产生放电,不少于400ns的高电势维持电压被施加至维持放电。当维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)不大于400ns时,放电单元中的壁电压是弱的,使得难以维持放电。
因此,由于相应于维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)增加,增加了放电被维持的时间,因此有可能稳定地执行维持放电。但是,由于当维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)太长时必须减少在一个子场中施加的维持脉冲的数目,因此,应使维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)不超过3μs。
因为当维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)太长时,维持脉冲的时段增加,所以,可施加在一个子场中的维持脉冲是有限的,使得难以显示各种灰度级。
因此,如图5B所示,根据等离子体显示设备所需显示的灰度级的数目,具有两个或更多不同维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)的脉冲被用于形成维持脉冲。
如图5B所示具有不同维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)的脉冲组合被重复施加,使得图6到8所示的维持脉冲可施加于扫描电极Y或维持电极Z。
图5C所示为在维持时段中交替施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z的中间脉冲所具有的两个或更多形状的第三实施例。每个脉冲的能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)是变化的,以便获得3个不同的脉冲形状。
当能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)增加时,用于给PDP提供维持脉冲以驱动PDP的维持驱动器的能量恢复速率增加。当能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)减少时,能量恢复速率减少。当能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)太短时,能量恢复不能充分地执行。当能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)太长时,通过能量恢复所恢复的能量是有限的。所以,脉冲的能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)优选范围从350ns到800ns。
如图5C所示具有不同能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)的脉冲组合被重复施加,使得图6到8所示的维持脉冲可施加于扫描电极Y或维持电极Z。
图5D所示为在维持时段中交替施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z的中间脉冲所具有的两个或更多形状的第四实施例。每个脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)、维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)是变化的。
通常,PDP的能量恢复效率主要受屏幕的大负载的影响,而PDP的亮度特性主要受屏幕的小负载的影响。
因此,在PDP的屏幕负载或平均图象电平(APL)大的情况下,当具有不小于550ns的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)或能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)的脉冲主要用于形成维持脉冲时,有可能改进PDP的能量恢复效率。
在PDP的屏幕负载或APL小的情况下,当具有不大于600ns的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)或能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)的脉冲主要用于形成维持脉冲时,有可能改进PDP的亮度特性。
因此,提供了具有不同的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)、维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间)以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)的脉冲,以将以上脉冲根据PDP的特性适当地互相组合以获得维持脉冲,并将获得的维持脉冲施加于扫描电极Y或维持电极Z。
图9A示出了具有6个不同形状的脉冲。s表示维持电压维持时间(Sus_up时间),且s的量值为s1>s2>s3的次序。v表示能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间),且v的量值为v1>v2>v3的次序。D表示能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间),且D的量值为D2>D3>D1的次序。当PDP需要大的能量恢复效率时,选择能量恢复上和下时间(ER_up和down时间)长的脉冲。为了恢复由于选择能量恢复上和下时间(ER_up和down时间)长的脉冲而恶化的维持电压裕度,可组合具有中等的能量恢复上和下时间(ER_up和down时间)的脉冲。
即,如图9B所示,当需要改进能量恢复效率和亮度特性并维持所述维持电压裕度时,优选的是将通过Sus_A+Sus_B+Sus_F的组合而获得的维持电压重复施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。
而且,如图9C所示,通过Sus_A+Sus_D的组合而获得的维持电压可重复施加于扫描电极Y,而通过Sus_C+Sus_E+Sus_A的组合而获得的维持电压可重复施加于维持电极Z。
如上所述,具有各种形状的脉冲组合重复施加于扫描电极Y或维持电极Z,以使能量恢复平稳地执行,亮度特性得以改进,而维持电压裕度得以维持。
图10所示为交替施加到扫描电极和维持电极的不同模式的脉冲的一个实施例。如上所述,一对脉冲交替施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。如图10所示,在模式1中,具有能量恢复上时间ER_up1、维持电压维持时间Sus_up1以及能量恢复下时间ER_down1的脉冲施加于扫描电极Y,而具有能量恢复上时间ER_up2、维持电压维持时间Sus_up2以及能量恢复下时间ER_down2的脉冲施加于维持电极Z。在模式2中,具有能量恢复上时间ER_up3、维持电压维持时间Sus_up3以及能量恢复下时间ER_down3的脉冲施加于扫描电极Y,而具有能量恢复上时间ER_up4、维持电压维持时间Sus_up4以及能量恢复下时间ER_down4的脉冲施加于维持电极Z。
在维持时段中,具有上述两个或更多不同模式的脉冲对优选地施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极Z。
图11A所示为具有不同模式的4对脉冲的一个实施例。在图11A所示的模式3中,施加于扫描电极Y的脉冲的过渡区和施加于维持电极Z的脉冲的过渡区互相重叠。在图11A所示的模式4中,施加于扫描电极Y的脉冲的维持电压上部分和施加于维持电极Z的脉冲的维持电压上部分互相重叠。
如模式3和4中所示,当施加于扫描电极Y的脉冲的过渡区和施加于维持电极Z的脉冲的过渡区互相重叠时,电压改变的量增加,于是强放电产生在两个电极之间。
图11B示出了图11A所示的4个不同模式按顺模式2、模式4、模式3、模式1的次序施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极Z的情况。
图11C示出了通过图11A所示的4个不同模式中的模式1、模式2和模式4的组合而获得的维持脉冲被重复施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极Z的情况。
如上所述,通过具有各种形状的脉冲组合而获得的维持脉冲被重复施加于扫描电极Y和维持电极Z,以使能量恢复平稳地执行,亮度特性得以改进,而维持电压裕度得以维持。
尽管已如此描述了本发明,但是显而易见的是可以多种方式进行改变。这种改变不应视为背离本发明的精神和范围,而对所属领域技术人员明显的所有这些修改意图包括在所附权利要求的范围内。
Claims (20)
1.一种等离子体显示设备,包括:
第一基板;
第二基板;
形成在所述第一基板上的第一和第二电极;以及
用于将维持脉冲施加至所述第一和第二电极的至少一个的维持驱动器,
其中施加至所述第一和第二电极的至少一个的维持脉冲在所述第一和最后脉冲之间具有有两个或更多形状的中间脉冲。
2.如权利要求1的设备,其中脉冲的形状由该脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)、维持电压维持时间以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)中的至少一个来限定。
3.如权利要求2的设备,其中所述脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)范围从350ns到800ns。
4.如权利要求2的设备,其中所述脉冲的维持电压维持时间范围从400ns到3μs。
5.如权利要求2的设备,其中所述脉冲的能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)范围从350ns到800ns。
6.如权利要求1的设备,其中所述脉冲的形状由能量恢复速率、若干表示的灰度级、维持电压裕度、温度、要显示的图像的辉度以及所述等离子体显示设备所需的平均图象电平(APL)中的至少一个来确定。
7.如权利要求2的设备,其中所述脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)、维持电压维持时间以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)由能量恢复速率、若干表示的灰度级、维持电压裕度、温度、要显示的图像的辉度以及所述等离子体显示设备所需的平均图象电平(APL)中的至少一个来确定。
8.如权利要求1的设备,其中所述中间脉冲是具有重复的两个或更多形状的一系列多个脉冲。
9.如权利要求1的设备,其中所述中间脉冲施加于同一电极。
10.一种等离子体显示设备,包括:
第一基板;
第二基板;
形成在所述第一基板上的第一和第二电极;以及
用于将维持脉冲施加至所述第一和第二电极的维持驱动器,
其中以交替方式施加到所述第一和第二电极的两个中间脉冲的对具有两个或更多模式。
11.如权利要求10的设备,其中所述两个中间脉冲的对的模式由所述两个中间脉冲的相应形状来确定。
12.如权利要求11的设备,其中脉冲的形状由该脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)、维持电压维持时间以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)中的至少一个来限定。
13.如权利要求12的设备,其中所述脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)范围从350ns到800ns。
14.如权利要求12的设备,其中所述脉冲的维持电压维持时间范围从400ns到3μs。
15.如权利要求12的设备,其中所述脉冲的能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)范围从350ns到800ns。
16.如权利要求11的设备,其中所述脉冲的形状由能量恢复速率、若干表示的灰度级、维持电压裕度、温度、要显示的图像的辉度以及所述等离子体显示设备所需的平均图象电平(APL)中的至少一个来确定。
17.如权利要求12的设备,其中所述脉冲的能量恢复上时间(ER_up时间)、维持电压维持时间以及能量恢复下时间(ER_down时间)由能量恢复速率、若干表示的灰度级、维持电压裕度、温度、要显示的图像的辉度以及所述等离子体显示设备所需的平均图象电平(APL)中的至少一个来确定。
18.如权利要求10的设备,其中所述两个中间脉冲的对的模式中至少一个是所述两个中间脉冲重叠的模式。
19.如权利要求18的设备,其中所述两个中间脉冲的对的模式中至少一个是所述两个中间脉冲的过渡区重叠的模式。
20.如权利要求10的设备,其中以交替方式施加到所述第一和第二电极的所述两个中间脉冲的对是重复的两个或更多模式的一系列组合。
