背景技术
在引入个人摄像机(PVR)技术之后,将硬盘驱动器用作存储设备,尤其是针对视频,已经变得越来越普遍。结果,当前许多PVR和机顶盒设备都包括硬盘驱动器,作为设备的一部分。这导致了设备成本的增加,使得机顶盒在经济上较为令人不满意。
因此,需要一种方法和系统,通过消除提供内部存储设备和管理控制的需要来降低机顶盒的成本。还需要一种更为经济的机顶盒,以使这些设备在经济上更加令人满意。
发明内容
一种用户侧接收机系统,包括网关设备,其提供了基于订户的网络与输出设备之间的接口。将存储系统设置于网关设备的外部,并通过网络接口与网关设备相连。存储系统提供用于存储从网络传输到网关设备的数据流的存储器。网络接口将网关设备与存储系统相链接,以便按照限制用户对数据的访问的方式,协同访问和存储去往/来自存储系统的数据。

具体实施方式
本发明提出了一种系统和方法,用于更为有效地利用可用的存储器资源。如机顶盒等视频存储设备的大多数潜在顾客拥有个人计算机(PC)或具有高存储容量硬盘驱动器的其他设备。本发明通过利用如PC上的现有存储容量来代替机顶盒或类似设备上的硬盘驱动器。例如,通过与PC进行连接,机顶盒将从经济上更加吸引潜在的购买者或订产。
本发明采用了如机顶盒等网关设备与PC之间的接口。这可以包括家庭联网程序或类似类型的接口,用于将网关设备与PC的硬盘驱动器相连。例如,该接口能够提供可靠的吞吐量,并且足够快,以便以能够接受的速率向消费者传送数据(例如,大约20Mb/s)。

如上所述,当前对硬盘驱动器的实现通常将其设置在PVR和机顶盒自身内部,而不是设置在分离的PC上。这样做的缺点在于:增加了设备的成本,并限制了那些针对由设备提供的特定OS而编制的应用程序。
本发明允许硬盘驱动器位于优选地通过HPNA或类似类型的接口22与网关设备14相连的、如PC等分离的存储设备26上,解决了现有技术实施中的问题。
在一个实施例中,存储设备26的安装可以包括用于针对系统所需数据,设置顾客PC的硬盘驱动器专用分区32的安装程序。可以使用户不能得到此分区上的数据。只有网关设备能够对此分区32进行读写。只有在顾客移除网关设备并对分区进行重新格式化(去除当前出现在分区上的所有数据)之后,硬盘驱动器的这个部分才再次变为可用的。
此外,顾客的PC将阻止网关数据路径外部的用户。作为安装的一部分,可以将软件安装在PC上,以便于与网关设备进行接口,如上所述。可能会需要复制保护,以保护发送到并存储在硬盘驱动器上的数据,尤其是视频数据。此数据在位于PC的硬盘驱动器上时,可以是加密的,而只有在网关设备14内才是未加密的,以防止对数据的侵权复制。
为此,网关设备14可以包括加密/解密程序34,以便对发送到设备26的数据进行加密,以及对数据进行解密,以便进行观看或使用。优选地,可以通过采用终端用户不知道而数据供应商知道的密钥或代码,来执行加密处理。按照这种方式,数据供应商可以监视对隐含数据的使用,并控制对隐含数据的访问。因此,数据供应商能够从存储设备26的硬盘驱动器的指定区域擦除数据,或者限制对给定文件的访问次数。此外,视频或文件可能会“超时”,从而如果用户想要在超时时间段之后再次观看视频或文件,则要对该视频支付额外的费用。通过限制对驻留在存储设备26上的数据文件的访问,由于只能在网关设备14中进行解密之后,才能访问文件,用户需要为访问文件付费。

在方框110中,由于网关设备对文件的访问和使用进行控制,为了访问和/或使用特定的文件,可以对用户进行适当的计费。此外,防止用户对视频或数据文件进行未经授权的复制或使用。在方框112中,可以根据使用(例如,观看视频的次数或访问视频的次数等)或在给定的时间段不受限制的访问(例如,一天、一周等),对用户进行收费。在方框114中,在已经观看过文件或在预定时间之后,网关设备自动删除该文件。
已经描述了宽带机顶盒前端存储系统的优选实施例(倾向于示例而并非限制),应当注意的是,本领域的普通技术人员根据上述教义,可以进行修改和变化。因此,应当理解的是,在由所附权利要求所限定的本发明的范围和精神内,可以对这里所公开的、本发明的特定实施例进行改变。因此,已经按照专利法的要求,对本发明进行了详细而具体的描述,在所附的权利要求书中阐明了寻求专利保护的技术方案。

Claims (18)

1、一种用户侧接收机系统,包括:
网关,用于提供携带有内容的网络与输出设备之间的链接;以及
接口,用于将网关与外部存储设备相连,以便将内容存储在所述外部存储设备上,从而通过网关来控制对所存储的内容的访问。
2、根据权利要求1所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述网关设备包括机顶盒。
3、根据权利要求1所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述存储系统包括个人计算机。
4、根据权利要求3所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述个人计算机由用户进行维护和操作。
5、根据权利要求3所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述个人计算机包括只能通过所述网关设备进行访问的分区。
6、根据权利要求3所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述计算机包括用户的其他应用。
7、根据权利要求1所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述存储系统包括与所述网关设备兼容的操作系统。
8、根据权利要求1所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:从所述网络接收到的数据与所述存储系统的所述操作系统相兼容。
9、根据权利要求1所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述存储系统存储已加密数据,以及所述网关设备包括用于解密所述已加密数据的解密代码。
10、根据权利要求1所述的接收机系统,其特征在于:所述网络接口包括家庭电话线网络联盟接口。
11、一种用于接收和存储来自基于订户的网络的数据的方法,包括以下步骤:
将网关设备设置在基于订户的网络与输出设备之间;
将存储系统与网关设备相连,以提供用于存储从网络传输到网关设备的数据流的存储器,所述存储系统位于所述网关设备的外部;
利用联网协议,将所述网关设备与所述存储系统进行接口;
通过所述网关设备,从基于订户的网络接收数据流;以及
将数据流存储在存储设备上。
12、根据权利要求11所述的方法,其特征在于:设置网关设备的步骤包括将机顶盒设置为网关设备且将个人计算机设置为存储系统的步骤。
13、根据权利要求12所述的方法,其特征在于:还包括以下步骤:在个人计算机上形成只能通过所述网关设备进行访问的分区。
14、根据权利要求11所述的方法,其特征在于:对网关设备进行接口的步骤包括采用家庭电话线网络联盟接口。
15、根据权利要求11所述的方法,其特征在于:存储步骤包括存储已加密数据,其中所述网关设备包括用于解密所述已加密数据的解密代码。
16、根据权利要求11所述的方法,其特征在于:还包括以下步骤:为了访问由所述存储系统存储的数据,向用户收费。
17、根据权利要求16所述的方法,其特征在于:为了访问由所述存储系统存储的数据,向用户收费的步骤包括以每次访问为基础收费。
18、根据权利要求16所述的方法,其特征在于:还包括以下步骤:在预定时间之后,删除由所述存储系统存储的数据。
