Abstract

An apparatus for accurately positioning tiles on a roof. The apparatus comprises a sheet material having two measuring edges. Each edge has a plurality of spaced apart measurement points positioned along each edge. A plurality of dashed lines are located on the surface of the sheet. The distance between the lines is predetermined. The spaced-apart dashed lines are disposed substantially parallel with respect to each other along the sheet surface. The two rows of spaced apart points of the first series are spaced apart from each other by equal distances. These points are located along spaced apart dashed lines. Another set of spaced apart points is located between the first series of spaced apart points. The dots of the second series are staggered relative to the first series. The internal measurement area is located within the boundary of the sheet material. The region has icons of a predetermined length and a predetermined height. The dashed lines, points and internal measurement areas provide reference locations to allow one or more tiles to be aligned therewith.

Description

Device for accurate installation of roof tiles
Technical Field
The present application relates generally to the installation of tiles on a roof and, more particularly, to an apparatus for accurately installing tiles on a roof.
Background
Installation of roof tiles typically requires labor intensive manual calibration using equipment (e.g., chalk lines, straightedge, etc.). While these devices are well known and widely used, they of course have a number of significant drawbacks. First, it is important to maintain high accuracy, particularly because any misalignment correction of the tiles can be expensive and can ultimately lead to roof leakage. Nowadays, a variety of tiles are manufactured so that large roof areas can be covered quickly. However, inaccurately positioned tiles remain a problem.
To date, the present inventors have not known an apparatus that allows a roofer to quickly and accurately install multiple tiles to cover a roof.
Disclosure of Invention
I have significantly reduced or substantially eliminated the problems associated with the above designs by designing a sheet membrane that allows a roofing worker to quickly and efficiently align tiles on a roof. The membrane includes a number of precisely measured lines and points that provide visual reference points allowing a roofer to align individual tiles or tile sets on the roof. These lines are useful each time a roofing worker lays a shingle because they are calculated so that the predetermined measurement lines eliminate any guesswork done by the roofing worker as each sheet is cut. In addition, the wires may be printed on various film-like sheets using any number of manufacturers known in the roofing industry.
Accordingly, in one embodiment, there is provided an apparatus for accurately positioning tiles on a roof, the apparatus comprising:
a sheet of material having a first measuring edge and a second measuring edge, each measuring edge having a plurality of spaced measuring points positioned therealong;
a plurality of elongated, spaced-apart, imaginary lines on the sheet surface, the distance between the imaginary lines being predetermined, the spaced-apart imaginary lines being disposed substantially parallel with respect to each other along the sheet surface,
a first series of first and second spaced apart points spaced apart from each other by an equal distance, the first and second spaced apart points being positioned along first and second spaced apart imaginary lines, respectively;
a second series of third spaced apart points located between the first and second series of first spaced apart points, the third spaced apart points of the second series being staggered relative to the first and second spaced apart points of the first series; and
an internal measurement area within the boundary of the sheet material, the internal measurement area having icons of a predetermined length and a predetermined height located thereon. The spaced-apart dashed lines, the spaced-apart points, and the internal measurement areas are disposed across the sheet material to provide a reference location to allow one or more tiles to be aligned therewith.
In one example, the first measurement point and the second measurement point are disposed in a zigzag orientation.
In one example, the plurality of elongated spaced-apart dashed lines on the sheet surface are separated by different distances. Different distances are measured inwardly from the first edge and the second edge.
In one example, a first solid line and a second solid line form boundaries between the first edge, the second edge, and the first measurement point, the second measurement point. The first and second solid lines are separated from the first and second edges by the same distance. The same distance is 3.5 inches.
In one example, the elongated spaced dashed lines are separated by a) 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches; b) 3.5 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches; c) 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches; d) 3.5 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches.
In another example, the elongated spaced dashed lines are separated by a) 2 inches, 3.25 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches; and b) 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches, 3.25 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches.
In one example, the sheet material is a film.
Accordingly, in another embodiment, there is provided an apparatus for accurately positioning tiles on a roof, the apparatus comprising:
a film-like sheet having a first measuring edge and a second measuring edge, each measuring edge having a plurality of spaced measuring points positioned therealong;
a plurality of elongated, spaced-apart, imaginary lines on the sheet surface, the distance between the imaginary lines being predetermined, the spaced-apart imaginary lines being disposed substantially parallel with respect to each other along the sheet surface,
a first series of first and second spaced apart points spaced apart from each other by an equal distance, the first and second spaced apart points being positioned along first and second spaced apart imaginary lines, respectively; and
a third spaced apart point of the second series located between the first spaced apart point and the second spaced apart point of the first series, the third spaced apart point of the second series being staggered relative to the first spaced apart point and the second spaced apart point of the first series, the spaced apart dashed lines and the spaced apart points being disposed across the sheet to provide a reference location to allow one or more tiles to be aligned therewith.
In one example, the apparatus further comprises: an interior measurement zone located between the first measurement edge and the second measurement edge, the interior measurement zone having icons of a predetermined length and a predetermined height located thereon. The spaced-apart dashed lines, the spaced-apart points, and the internal measurement areas are disposed across the sheet material to provide a reference location to allow one or more tiles to be aligned therewith.

Referring to fig. 1-6, there is shown, in general terms, an apparatus 10 for accurately positioning asphalt shingles on a roof. In the example shown, the device is a membrane-like sheet material, the membrane being first positioned on a strong roof deck before the roof tiles are mounted thereon. The apparatus 10 is suitable for use with a variety of asphalt brands, such as IKO, GAF, BP. The apparatus 10 advantageously allows roof contractors to quickly and accurately align tiles as compared to conventional methods that typically use chalk lines or pre-existing straightedges. The apparatus 10 is typically provided in rolls and cut to size at the site or for time saving before the contractor reaches the site.
As best shown in fig. 1 and 4, the apparatus 10 is a generally rectangular sheet 12 including a first measuring edge 14 and a second measuring edge 16, and two side edges 18, 20. Each of the measuring edges 14, 16 has a plurality of spaced measuring points 22, 24 positioned along the edge and slightly inwardly from the edge. Although the sheet 12 is shown as generally rectangular, square sheet is within the scope of the present disclosure.
Referring back to fig. 1, a plurality of elongated spaced-apart dashed lines 26 are located on a front-facing sheet surface 28. The spaced-apart dashed lines 26 are disposed substantially parallel with respect to one another along the sheet surface 28. The first and second solid lines 30, 32 extend between the two side edges 18, 20 to form boundaries between the first and second edges and the first and second measurement points 22, 24. The first and second solid lines 30, 32 are separated from the first and second edges 18, 20 by the same distance. In the example shown, the distance is 3.5 inches. The first and second spaced apart points 34, 36 of the first series are spaced apart from each other by an equal distance. The first and second spaced apart points 34, 36 are positioned along first and second spaced apart dashed lines 38, 40, respectively. The third spaced apart points 42 of the second series are located between the first spaced apart points 34 and the second spaced apart points 36 of the first series and between two parallel dashed lines 44, 46. The third spaced apart dots 42 of the second series are staggered relative to the first spaced apart dots 34 and the second spaced apart dots 36 of the first series.
Still referring to fig. 1, the interior measurement zone 48 is located within the boundaries of the sheet material. In the example shown, the interior measurement zone 48 has an icon 50 of a predetermined length 52 and a predetermined height 54 located thereon, which icon 50 may be used to provide additional reference. One of ordinary skill in the art will of course recognize that other icons of different sizes may be used and may be part of the custom device 10. The spaced-apart dashed lines, the spaced-apart points, and the inner measurement zone 48 are disposed across the sheet material to provide a reference location to allow one or more tiles to be aligned therewith.
Still referring to fig. 1, the first measurement point 22 and the second measurement point 24 are disposed in a zigzag orientation.
As best shown in fig. 1 and 4, a plurality of elongated spaced-apart dashed lines 26 on a sheet surface 28 are separated by different distances. The distance between each of the broken lines is predetermined. In the example shown, the elongated spaced dashed lines are separated by a) 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches; b) 3.5 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches; c) 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches; d) 3.5 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches. In another example, the elongated spaced dashed lines are separated by a) 2 inches, 3.25 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches; and b) 2 inches, 3.5 inches, 2 inches, 3.25 inches, 2 inches, 3.5 inches.
Different distances are measured inwardly from the first edge and the second edge.
In summary, for the apparatus 10, the edges 14, 16 are measured; the side edges 18, 20, together with the measuring points 22, 24 and line details (dashed lines, points and crosses) provide significant advantages over conventional measuring devices. Furthermore, once the measurement features are printed on the film, they provide a set of fixed, tamper-resistant references.
OTHER EMBODIMENTS
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art that variations and modifications may be made to the embodiments described herein to adapt it to various uses and conditions.
