Detailed Description
In the drawings described herein, identical features, articles, or components are illustrated with the same reference numerals.
Fig. 1 is a side view of an article 1 for use in a non-combustible sol supply. As shown in fig. 1, the article 1 comprises a column of aerosol-generating material 3, and a mouthpiece 2 at a first end of the column of aerosol-generating material 3. A column of aerosol-generating material 3 is wrapped in the enclosure 4 and connected to the mouthpiece 2 with tipping paper 8. The article 1 further comprises an assembly 5, the assembly 5 being located within the enclosure 4 at opposite ends of the column of aerosol-generating material 3 to retain the aerosol-generating material 3 within the enclosure 4. The component 5 may remain within the enclosure 4 due to friction between the component 5 and the enclosure 4, or it may be otherwise attached to the enclosure 4 with an adhesive.
The column of aerosol-generating material 3 may be in the form of tobacco beads. The assembly 5 is designed and positioned within the enclosure 4 to retain a column of aerosol-generating material 3 (e.g., tobacco beads) within the enclosure 4 by blocking or closing the ends of the enclosure 4.
The assembly 5 may comprise a gathered sheet of material, such as a fibrous material, e.g., paper, that may be inserted into the end of the enclosure 4 to close the end of the enclosure 4. The assembly 5 may be formed of a non-polymeric material. The assembly 5 may also be biodegradable. The component may be formed of acetate or a similar material, such as cellulose acetate, or include such one or more materials as part of its composition. In the embodiment shown in fig. 1, the mouthpiece 2 and the assembly 5 are on both sides of the aerosol generating material 3. The aerosol-generating material 3 is thus held firmly in place within the article 1 by the assembly 5 at one end and by the mouthpiece 2 at the other end.
The component 5 may comprise an amorphous solid material. The assembly 5 may be formed from a single aggregated sheet of amorphous solid material. Alternatively, the sheet of amorphous solid material may be cut into strips that may be substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the article.
In some embodiments, the amorphous solid may be a dried gel. Amorphous solids are solid materials that can hold some fluid (e.g., liquid) therein. The amorphous solid material may be present on or in a support to form a substrate. The amorphous solid may be laminated to a support substrate. The carrier may be, for example, paper, card, cardboard, recombinant material, plastic material, ceramic material, composite material, glass, foil, metal or metal alloy, or comprise the above.
The amorphous solid material is in the form of a sheet, optionally in an aggregated, wound or coiled form. In some cases, the sheet may be incorporated into the article in sheet form. In other cases, the pieces may be chopped and then incorporated into the article. The amorphous solid may also be coiled.
In some examples, the amorphous solid in sheet form may have a tensile strength of about 200N/m to about 900N/m. In some examples, for example where the amorphous solid does not include a filler, the amorphous solid may have a tensile strength of 200N/m to 400N/m or 200N/m to 300N/m or about 250N/m.
In some examples, for example where the amorphous solid comprises a filler, the amorphous solid may have a tensile strength of 600N/m to 2600N/m or 700N/m to 900N/m or about 800N/m. Such tensile strength may be particularly useful in embodiments where the amorphous solid material is included in the aerosol-generating article/assembly as a rolled sheet (suitably in the form of a tube).
In some cases, the amorphous solid layer may have a thickness of about 0.015mm to about 1.5mm, suitably about 0.05mm to about 1.5mm or 0.05mm to about 1.0 mm. Suitably, the thickness may be in the range of from about 0.1mm or 0.15mm to about 1mm, 0.5mm or 0.3 mm. The amorphous solid may comprise more than one layer, and the thicknesses described herein refer to the aggregate thickness of those layers.
The thickness as defined herein is the average thickness of the material. In some cases, the amorphous solid thickness may vary by no more than 25%, 20%, 15%, 10%, 5%, or 1%.
In some cases, the amorphous solids may comprise 1-60 wt% gellant, where these weights are on a dry weight basis.
Suitably, the amorphous solid may comprise from about 1 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%, 20 wt%, or 25 wt% to about 60 wt%, 50 wt%, 45 wt%, 40 wt%, 35 wt%, 30 wt%, or 27 wt% gelling agent (all on a dry weight basis). For example, the amorphous solid may comprise 1-50 wt%, 5-40 wt%, 10-30 wt%, or 15-27 wt% gellant.
In some embodiments, the gelling agent comprises a hydrocolloid. In some embodiments, the gelling agent comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of alginates, pectins, starches (and derivatives), celluloses (and derivatives), gums, silica or silicone compounds, clays, polyvinyl alcohol, and combinations thereof. For example, in some embodiments, the gelling agent comprises one or more of alginate, pectin, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, pullulan, xanthan gum, guar gum, carrageenan, agarose, acacia, fumed silica, PDMS, sodium silicate, kaolin, and polyvinyl alcohol. In some cases, the gelling agent includes alginate and/or pectin, and may be combined with a hardening agent (e.g., a calcium source) during the formation of the amorphous solid. In some cases, the amorphous solid may comprise calcium-crosslinked alginate and/or calcium-crosslinked pectin.
In some embodiments, the gelling agent comprises an alginate, and the alginate is present in the amorphous solid in an amount of 10-30 wt% (on a dry weight basis) of the amorphous solid. In some embodiments, the alginate is the only gelling agent present in the amorphous solid. In other embodiments, the gelling agent comprises an alginate and at least one additional gelling agent, such as pectin.
In some embodiments, the amorphous solid may include a gelling agent comprising carrageenan.
The amorphous solid may comprise a flavorant (also referred to herein as a "flavorant"). In some cases, the amorphous solid may comprise up to about 80%, 70%, 60%, 55%, 50% or 45% by weight perfume. In some cases, the amorphous solid may comprise at least about 0.1 wt%, 1 wt%, 10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, 35 wt%, or 40 wt% perfume (all on a dry weight basis). For example, the amorphous solid may comprise 1-80 wt.%, 10-80 wt.%, 20-70 wt.%, 30-60 wt.%, 35-55 wt.%, or 30-45 wt.% fragrance. In some cases, the flavorant comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of menthol.
In some cases, the amorphous solid may additionally comprise an emulsifier that emulsifies the melted perfume during manufacture. For example, the amorphous solids may comprise from about 5% to about 15% by weight of the emulsifier (on a dry weight basis), suitably about 10% by weight. The emulsifying agent may include acacia.
In some embodiments, the amorphous solid is a hydrogel and comprises less than about 20% by weight water on a wet weight basis. In some cases, the hydrogel may comprise less than about 15 wt%, 12 wt% or 10 wt% water on a wet weight basis. In some cases, the hydrogel may comprise at least about 1 wt%, 2 wt%, or at least about 5 Wt% Water (WWB).
Fig. 2 shows a side view of an article 1 for an aerosol provision system according to a second embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the article further comprises a second component 6 located within the enclosure 4 between the mouthpiece 2 and the column of aerosol-generating material 3. The aerosol-generating material 3 is held in place within the article 1 by the component 5 and the second component 6. In articles for aerosol supply systems, a common problem is the temperature of the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece of the article may become hot and thus may cause discomfort to the user when the mouthpiece is placed in the user's lips. The mouthpiece is spaced from the column of aerosol generating material 3 by inserting the second component 6 between the column of aerosol generating material 3 and the mouthpiece 2. This interval causes a decrease in the temperature of the nozzle member, and thus there is no discomfort to the user. This arrangement also allows a column of aerosol-generating material 3 to be held within the article 1 by the assembly 5 and the second assembly 6.
The second component 6 may comprise a gathered sheet of material, such as a fibrous material, for example paper. The second component 6 may also comprise an amorphous solid material. In addition, the second component 6 may be identical to the component 5 located at the opposite end of the column of aerosol-generating material 3.
Fig. 3 shows an article 1 for an aerosol provision system according to a third embodiment of the invention. The nozzle member 2 of the article 1 comprises a body of material 7. The body of material 7 may comprise an amorphous solid. The amorphous solid material in the nozzle member 2 may be the same amorphous solid material within the assembly 5 or the second assembly 6. The inventors have found that providing a body of amorphous solid material in the mouthpiece 2 advantageously provides a cooling effect to the aerosol as it is drawn through the mouthpiece in use. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is hypothesized that the heat transferred from the aerosol to the amorphous solid material as it passes through the body 7 causes the components of the amorphous solid material to atomize in use, thereby causing the aerosol to cool and advantageously enabling the flavour of the aerosol passing through the mouthpiece 2 to be modified simultaneously if required. This arrangement can reduce the known problems of overheated smoking articles when the aerosol reaches the lips of the consumer and also provide a means of adding additional flavour to the aerosol without increasing manufacturing complexity.
Methods of making articles according to the above embodiments are also contemplated. The method includes providing a column of aerosol-generating material, and a mouthpiece at a first end of the column of aerosol-generating material. The aerosol-generating material may then be wrapped in the wrapper and attached to the mouthpiece using tipping paper. The method further includes disposing components at opposite ends of the aerosol-generating material to retain the aerosol-generating material within the enclosure. The component may comprise a material formed from an amorphous solid.
