Both of these approaches do not fundamentally address the effective sealing of the interface between the liner and the metal flange against gas or liquid. At low temperatures, polymeric materials such as plastics have greater shrinkage than metals, both radially and axially, which increases the distance between the bladder and the flange, opening the interface between them and causing leakage of the contained gas or liquid; even without such shrinkage, when the pressure vessel contains small molecule gas (such as hydrogen, natural gas), the gas molecules are very small, and if there is no dense chemical bond between the liner and the flange, or mechanical sealing means such as a sealing rubber ring, the small molecule gas can still escape from the interface.
