If a lightning arc is attached to the surface of the composite material, under the initial action of the lightning arc, the outer matrix is firstly ablated, melted, burned and evaporated, then the lightning current contacts with the conductive carbon fibers, and the lightning charges are diffused and spread through each fiber bundle until the lightning charges are transferred to the nearest lightning channel. Under the action of high voltage and large current, the temperature of the fiber and the surrounding temperature thereof is rapidly increased, and when the temperature is higher than the critical temperature for the decomposition of the resin matrix, the resin matrix is gradually thermally decomposed, so that the fiber is completely exposed, the support of the resin matrix is lost, the rigidity and the strength of the whole composite material are rapidly reduced, and the structural damage is finally caused. The test shows that: under the condition of not taking lightning protection measures, after the composite material is subjected to lightning current of 60 kA-100 kA and the charge quantity of 1.9C, the composite material can be seriously damaged.

The nickel leading edge shield can play a role in protecting the leading edge of the blade, can receive lightning striking the blade and plays a role in conduction. When the composite material blade is struck by lightning, the lightning is transmitted to the lightning-protection braid through the nickel leading edge shield, then transmitted to the propeller root outer sleeve through the lightning-protection braid, and finally transmitted to the propeller hub through the propeller root outer sleeve to form an equipotential body with the airplane, so that the composite material blade is prevented from being damaged by the lightning. The composite blade is light in weight and good in lightning protection effect, and the safety and reliability of the composite blade are greatly improved; the maintenance cost of the composite material blade is reduced, and meanwhile, the service life of the composite material blade is prolonged.
