Virtual private networks encompass extensions of private networks that are linked to encapsulation, encryption, and authentication across a shared or public network. The virtual private network mainly adopts a tunnel technology, an encryption and decryption technology, a key management technology and a user and equipment identity authentication technology. A VPN is understood to be a virtual private intranet that can establish a private communication link between two or more intranets connected to the Internet at different locations via a special encrypted communication protocol. The virtual private network functions are: and establishing a private network on the public network for encrypted communication. The VPN gateway realizes remote access through encryption of data packets and conversion of destination addresses of the data packets. VPNs have a variety of classification schemes, mainly by protocol. A VPN may be implemented in a number of ways, including server, hardware, software, etc. In a word, the VPN has the characteristics of low cost and easy use.
