Technical Field

Background
For insulated power cables, the thickness of the insulation around their conductors may not be uniform, i.e. the insulation is off-centre, due to the manufacturing process. In the electrified operation cable, the shielding layer on the surface of the conductor insulating layer is the termination point of an electric field, and when the insulating thickness is uniform, the electric field is a coaxial cylinder electric field. The electric field distribution in the insulation of such a cable is uniform, i.e. the electric field strength is equal over a circumference of the same insulation radius. When the insulation thickness is uneven and eccentric, the electric field is no longer a coaxial cylinder electric field, the electric field distribution in the insulation layer is no longer even, the electric field is concentrated to the thinner insulation part, namely, the electric field strength born by the thinner insulation part is higher. It can be seen that insulation eccentricity is very detrimental to the cable and can lead to insulation breakdown when severe.
For cables of voltage class 35kV and below, the national product standards specify that the eccentricity (the difference between the maximum and minimum thickness divided by the maximum thickness) should not be greater than 15%. However, due to the special use occasions, the quality requirement on products is higher and higher, and a situation that a user requires that the insulation eccentricity of the cable is not more than 10% occurs. For medium and high voltage cables, the requirement of eccentricity is easily met in production due to thick insulation, but for low voltage cables, the insulation is thin, and the eccentricity is difficult to control. The eccentricity is hardly adjusted to be within 10% by manpower depending on experience, time and labor are wasted, insulating materials are wasted, and certain economic loss is brought to enterprises.
