Description

Display device
Technical Field
The invention relates to the technical field of display, in particular to a display device.
Background
The color gamut generally refers to the spectrum locus of visible light that can be seen by human eyes in nature, and the area of the region formed by the visible spectrum locus is the maximum color gamut area that can be seen by human eyes. At present, R, G, B three-primary-color display devices are adopted by display devices such as projectors and displays which are composed of different display devices to reproduce images in a color-restoring manner. In a given chromaticity space, such as CIE1931xy chromaticity space, the triangle formed by the R, G, B three primary colors of a display device is called the color gamut which can be displayed by the device, and the larger the color gamut space area is, the more vivid and vivid the color picture is, however, how to make the display device realize the display of wider color gamut is an important technical subject in the industry.
Light sources of display devices such as laser projectors are generally classified into three major categories, one of which is to excite phosphors of different colors by short-wavelength laser to generate primary colors of red, green and blue. Another type directly utilizes red, green and blue lasers as the three primary color light sources. The third is the combination of the first two, and a general blue laser light source is used as an excitation light source with short wavelength to excite the fluorescent powder to generate red-green primary color light and also used as blue primary color light. Each of these three different implementation techniques has advantages and disadvantages. For the scheme of exciting the fluorescent powder or mixing the laser fluorescence by the laser, because the semiconductor blue laser with the gallium nitride substrate has the characteristics of high efficiency, long service life and stable work, the scheme of exciting the fluorescent powder color wheel by the blue semiconductor laser has the characteristics of long service life, high efficiency, stable equipment and low cost. But the color gamut of this solution is relatively small due to the broad spectrum of phosphor-excited fluorescence (Laser phosphor). Generally, a display device using the technology can cover the complete sRGB color gamut, and the color gamut can be enhanced to reach the DCI-P3 color gamut by some enhancement processing, such as adding a narrow-band optical filter to remove the yellow light spectrum in the green light and the red light. But the narrow-band filtering loses considerable luminance of the light, so that the efficiency of the display device is greatly reduced. A display device using pure RGB lasers has a very wide color gamut because RGB lasers have very good monochromaticity. A display device (e.g., a projection system) using RGB laser can easily meet the rec.2020 color gamut standard, and please refer to fig. 1 for a comparison of the color gamuts of the display devices.
However, RGB laser display devices (such as projectors) also have a number of disadvantages. The first is speckle. Speckle is caused by the coherence of laser light, and the light reflected on a display plane interferes due to a phase difference caused by the fluctuation of the plane, resulting in uneven brightness distribution on the display screen. Although there have been many inventions that attempt to solve the problem of laser speckle, none are ideal. Secondly, the cost of the RGB laser display device is high. This is because the red and green lasers in RGB laser display devices are not mature under the current technology. The efficiency of semiconductor green laser can only be below 20%, which is far lower than blue laser of gallium nitride substrate and red laser of ternary substrate, and the cost is very high. While the red laser has almost the same efficiency as the blue laser, the red laser has poor temperature stability, and not only the efficiency is significantly reduced with the increase of temperature, but also the center wavelength is shifted. The two points make the RGB laser display device have color cast along with temperature change. This requires a thermostat for the red laser to stabilize the operating state of the red laser, which means a powerful cooling device is required to ensure the operating temperature of the red laser to be stable, thereby greatly increasing the cost of the RGB laser display device.
In view of the above, the present invention proposes to combine the laser fluorescence and the complementary light such as RGB laser, so as to effectively exert the advantages of both and make up for the respective disadvantages. A small amount of red and green laser is added into the laser fluorescence system to serve as supplement light, so that the color gamut range of the projection system can be effectively expanded. And due to the addition of fluorescence, the speckle effect of supplementary light such as pure laser can be greatly weakened. Although speckle cannot be completely eliminated, the addition of fluorescence greatly reduces the contrast of speckle from being perceived by the human eye. Because the red and green excitation supplement light with high power is not needed, compared with an RGB laser light source, the red and green excitation supplement light does not need a complex heat dissipation system, and the cost of the system is greatly reduced.
Further, it is also an important issue how to recycle the non-image light generated by the display device to improve the light utilization rate and the brightness of the image. Existing display devices, such as projection devices, typically employ spatial light modulators for image modulation, which may generate non-image light during the image modulation process, which the present invention contemplates recycling. In particular, a DMD (Digital micromirror Device) spatial Light modulator using DLP (Digital Light processing) projection technology is increasingly widely used due to its advantages of high contrast, long Device lifetime, high fill factor, etc. In the DLP projection technology, three colors of light (R (red), G (green), and B (blue) (or more colors such as R (red), G (green), B (blue), and W (white)) emitted from a light source in time series are projected onto a DMD chip, and the DMD chip receives a control signal from a DLP control system and then reflects the light of different colors onto a projection screen to form an image.
The DMD chip is composed of hundreds of thousands or even millions of micromirrors, and one micromirror corresponds to one pixel. The rotating device is arranged below each micromirror, the micromirrors can be turned between an ON state and an OFF state under the control of a digital driving signal output by a DLP control system, and the turning speed of the micromirrors can reach thousands of times per second.
As shown in fig. 2, fig. 2 is a schematic diagram of an optical path of a DMD chip using DLP projection technology to modulate an image, where the DMD chip includes a plurality of micromirrors 8, and when the micromirrors 8 are in an ON state, incident light 9 is reflected to a projection lens 10 and finally emitted to form an image; when the micromirrors 8 are in the OFF state, the incident light 9 is reflected to an area outside the projection lens 10, absorbed by the projector housing or reflected back and forth inside the housing to be lost. The DLP control system controls the number of times (total duration) that the corresponding micromirror 8 is in the ON state according to the gray-scale value of each pixel in the image frame data, and the number of times (total duration) that each micromirror 8 is in the ON state determines the brightness of the corresponding pixel ON the projection screen.
In the image modulation process, the micromirrors 8 of the DMD chip in the ON state reflect incident light to the projection lens 10 to form projection light, and the DMD chip also reflects light of a considerable intensity by the micromirrors 8 in the OFF state to lose the light, so that light other than the projection light is not effectively utilized.
In view of the above, a basic light recycling system design of a one-chip spatial light modulator is shown in fig. 3. Specifically, the display apparatus shown in fig. 3 includes a light source 15, a polarization conversion device 13, a polarization light combining plate 16, a spatial light modulator 11, and a lens assembly 12, wherein light emitted from the light source 15 is subjected to polarization conversion by the polarization conversion device 13 and then incident ON the spatial light modulator 11, light is reflected and provided to the lens assembly 12 in an ON state, and light is subjected to polarization conversion by the polarization conversion device 14 and reflected by the polarization light combining plate 16 and then incident ON the spatial light modulator 11 again to enhance the screen brightness in an OFF state. Another light recycling system design based on a dual-optical spatial modulator is shown in fig. 4, specifically, the display device shown in fig. 3 includes a light source 1, a first spatial light modulator 2, relay elements 5, 6, 7, 8, a second spatial light modulator 3, and a lens assembly 4, where light emitted by the light source 1 is modulated by the first spatial light modulator 2 to form first light 18 for displaying an image and second light 17 not used for displaying an image. The first light 17 passes through the light recycling system 19 and then is modulated with the second light 18 by the second spatial light modulator 3, but the first spatial light modulator 2 is limited to LCD or LCOS. It is understood that the light recycling system of the display device shown in fig. 2 may include light guiding and relaying elements 5, 6, 7, and 8, and the lens assembly 4 is disposed corresponding to the second spatial light modulator 3, and may perform projection display on the image light emitted by the second spatial light modulator 3.
However, the above two designs also have respective disadvantages, such as the first one is not directed to the display device of the existing two-piece type spatial light modulator, and the second one has a limitation on the type of the spatial light modulator, which needs to be improved.

Further, for the display device 100 according to the present invention, it is verified that the color gamut of REC 2020 can be achieved by adding a small amount of red and green laser light. Referring to fig. 12, fig. 12 is a schematic diagram of the technical color gamut and color volume expansion measured by the display device 100 shown in fig. 5. Specifically, it was measured that the color gamut can be expanded to the range of rec.2020 by adding the green laser light and the red laser light with the brightness of 5%, wherein the peripheral shaded area shown in fig. 12 is the expanded color gamut range of the display device compared with the color gamut range of the common DCI-P3, and thus the display effect of the display device 100 is better.
And furthermore, the second color supplement light and the third color supplement light are green laser and red laser, and the pure laser has better monochromaticity, so that the color gamut is wider and the price is more expensive, and the brightness of the picture pure laser can be enhanced while the cost is saved by recovering the pure laser.
Taking red laser as an example, assuming that there are 10000 pixels in the effective picture, each pixel has 256 gray levels (0-255), and we refer to a red picture with all pixels RGB gray levels (255, 0, 0) in a frame as 2550000 "units" of red light, regardless of diffraction loss and other losses. If only 1200000 "units" of red laser light are needed in a frame, the utilization rate of the red laser light is only 47% without the light recycling system, but after the light recycling system is added, when the red laser light is recycled only once, the utilization rate is increased to 71.9%, that is, the brightness of the red laser pixel on the frame is increased by 53% without increasing the power consumption of the laser.
In addition, the display device 100 of the present invention has the first and second spatial light modulators 120 and 130, and the two-chip DMD system can improve the situation that the brightness is insufficient or a certain color is insufficient in the monolithic DMD system, and in an embodiment, the display device 100 of the present invention can adopt one of the spatial light modulators (120 or 130) to process red light alone, so that the problem of insufficient red light can be greatly improved, and the picture color is more vivid. Because pure laser's monochromaticity is better, can make the colour gamut scope wider, and the price is more expensive, and fluorescence is high nevertheless colour difference, can reduce the colour gamut scope, consequently all add first and second on-off absorber in two light cycle systems and guarantee that only pure laser of recovery.
The above description is only an embodiment of the present invention, and not intended to limit the scope of the present invention, and all modifications of equivalent structures and equivalent processes performed by the present specification and drawings, or directly or indirectly applied to other related technical fields, are included in the scope of the present invention.
