Abstract

A feed injector including a barrel and a piston is provided. The piston is slidably received in the barrel and is movable within the barrel from a maximum insertion position to a retracted position to draw a dose of product into the barrel. The syringe includes means for presetting the retracted position, thereby defining the maximum dose that can be drawn into the barrel.

Description

Feeding injector
Technical Field
The present invention relates generally to an injector, and more particularly to a feed injector for delivering a desired dose of a product (e.g., a flowable product).
Background
The syringe is a reciprocating pump consisting of a sliding piston/plunger that fits tightly into a barrel/tube. The plunger may be pulled and pushed within the barrel or barrel to cause the syringe to draw in or expel liquid or gas through the orifice at the open end of the tube. Pressure is used to operate the syringe. Plastics and disposable syringes are commonly used to administer drugs.
In normal operation, first, the plunger is in a bottom position (typically maximally inserted into the barrel). The end of the barrel (and/or the nozzle, needle, etc. extending therefrom) is then immersed in the liquid and the plunger is pulled back or towards the top position, thereby pulling the fluid into the tube interior. When the plunger is pulled back, a partial vacuum is created in the tube, resulting in a pressure differential. The pressure inside the cylinder is lower than atmospheric pressure, so that fluid enters the tube to establish pressure equilibrium. When the plunger is pushed back or towards the bottom, it exerts pressure on the fluid to move it away from the syringe.
Currently, the user must adjust the dose when using the syringe. However, the rate of feeding failure is high because users often use the wrong amount of syrup (no instructions read, no correct amount of syrup based on the weight of the baby, handling problems, etc.).
The present invention seeks to solve the problems of known syringes.
Disclosure of Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a feed injector comprising a barrel and a piston slidably received in the barrel and movable within the barrel from a maximum insertion position to a retracted position to aspirate a dose of product into the barrel, the injector comprising means for presetting the retracted position to define a maximum dose which can be aspirated into the barrel.
In some embodiments, the syringe may be adjusted to set a plurality of different retracted positions.
In some aspects, the present invention may be based on the principle of varying the effective length of the piston.
In some embodiments, the syringe is provided with a plurality of pre-settable stop ribs.
In some embodiments, the injector is configured to help prevent mis-feeding.
In some embodiments, multiple compartments are formed in the syringe.
The barrel may be generally cylindrical.
Adjustment between the retracted positions may be determined by the relative rotational direction between the cylinder and the piston.
The barrel may include a blocking projection and the piston may include one or more cooperating projections which together define one or more maximum retracted positions of the piston.
The or each projection on the piston comprises a rib, for example a transverse rib extending from the central piston rod. For example, the piston rod may have a substantially cross-shaped cross-section and the ribs may be substantially quadrant-shaped.
Either end of the piston/plunger may have a generally disk-shaped flange. A flange forming a seal in the bore/cavity of the cartridge; the other flange is used to pull the piston into/out of the cylinder.
One end of the barrel may have a barrel flange.
In some embodiments, the blocking protrusion of the barrel is reversibly movable between a non-blocking position to a blocking position. In other embodiments, the blocking protrusion of the barrel irreversibly moves from the non-blocking position to the blocking position.
The barrel has a feed end with a flat head.
In some embodiments, the syringe allows the amount to be fed to be preset by using some barrier rib located within the piston that interacts with a recess at the upper end of the barrel. The position of the ribs is related to the amount to be fed. That is, the lowest rib allows 2.5ml to be sucked out of the bottle, and then the rib of the piston will be blocked at the upper end of the barrel. The recess at the cylinder is deformable and pressed into the cylinder. The piston is self-divided into three compartments by longitudinal ribs (standard syringe). There is a cross rib in each of the three compartments. These ribs indicate how far the piston can move up. Once the deformable zone is pressed inside the cylinder-depending on the direction of the piston-a 2.5ml (lowest barrier rib), 5ml (middle barrier rib) or 7ml (highest barrier rib) dose will be allowed to be fed. Such a snap in the deformable region may be reversible so that another dose may also be selected.
The present invention also provides a feed injector for delivering a desired dosage of a pharmaceutical syrup product, the injector having a plurality of different pre-settable dosages determined by the extent to which the plunger can be withdrawn from the barrel. The maximum retracted final position of the piston is determined by the relative rotational direction between the piston and the cylinder.
The invention also provides a feed injector comprising a barrel and a piston, which injector allows the amount to be fed to be preset by using a barrier rib located within the piston which interacts with a recess at the upper end of the barrel.
The increment/difference between different doses may be in the range of 1m to 5 ml.
In some embodiments, the dose may be one or more selected from 2.5ml, 5ml, 7.5ml and 10 ml.
In some aspects and embodiments, three, four, or five different doses may be provided; for example: 2.5ml, 5ml or 7.5 ml.
In some embodiments, the plunger may be locked in a maximum or near maximum insertion position. This may be used, for example, to prevent any dispensing altogether.
Another aspect provides a feed injector comprising a tube and a plunger slidably received in the tube and movable within the tube from an insertion position to a retracted position to draw a dose of product into the tube, the injector comprising means for presetting the retracted position to define a maximum dose that can be drawn into the tube.
The present invention also provides a drug syrup dispensing syringe comprising a syringe as described herein.
The invention also provides a syringe as described herein in combination with a container of product to be dispensed.

It will be further understood that terms, unless expressly defined herein, are intended to be interpreted as conventional terms in the relevant art and not in an idealized or overly formal sense.
The drawings are not necessarily to scale and in some instances, the drawings may be exaggerated or simplified for illustrative purposes only. Based on the following examples of possible embodiments of the invention, a person skilled in the art will appreciate many possible applications and variations of the invention.
Referring initially to fig. 1, a dispensing syringe, generally designated 10, is shown.
The syringe 10 includes a barrel 15 and a cooperating plunger/piston 20, the plunger/piston 20 being adapted to slide within the interior chamber of the barrel.
Referring now also to fig. 2A-2C, the piston 20 includes an elongate generally cruciform cross-section pivot rod 25, in some sense the pivot rod 25 divides the piston into four quadrants, each quadrant being defined by two legs of the rod.
At one end of the rod is a disc-shaped piston flange 30. At the other end of the stem is a sealing flange 35 which is a sliding seal on the inside surface of the barrel.
As best shown in fig. 2C, four quadrant-shaped barrier ribs 40a, 40b, 40C, 40d are provided; each rib extends between two legs of the bar. There is only one rib in each quadrant of the bar and each rib is located at a different point along the length of the bar.
Referring now also to fig. 3A (perspective view) and 3B (plan view), the cylinder 15 is a generally cylindrical tube. One end of the cylinder is a feeding end and is finished by a flat head. The disc-shaped end plate 45 partially closing this end has a central dispensing orifice 50. The other end of the barrel is open (and receives the piston in use) and has a pair of opposed external flanges 55a, 55b which assist in depressing the piston.
On the side of the barrel piston receiving end, between the flanges, is a deformable region 60.
The region 60 includes a pair of arcuate tabs 65a, 65B which are joined together and are movable radially inwardly from a non-blocking position shown in fig. 4A to a blocking position shown in fig. 4B in which they extend into the interior cavity of the barrel. In this embodiment, each flap is hinged to the barrel wall and also hinged to each other. The movement of the wings may be reversed.
As shown in fig. 5, the piston 20 is inserted into the cylinder 15. If the flap is in the non-blocking position, the piston can move up and down freely (and can be retracted completely) in the cylinder.
However, if the tabs are pressed inwardly, the piston is prevented from rotating within the barrel, thereby setting the relative rotational direction. This also means that one of the four quadrants of the lever is momentarily aligned with the tab. This means, therefore, that the barrier ribs in that quadrant cannot pass over the fins. This therefore sets the maximum amount by which the piston in use can be withdrawn from the barrel. Since the four ribs are all located at different points on the stem, by preselecting the stem quadrant into which the tab moves, the maximum amount by which the piston can be retracted and hence how much product is drawn into the barrel can be determined. Fig. 5 shows that the rib 40d is selected and abuts on the underside of the tab to prevent further retraction of the piston. Other views of this selected final position are shown in fig. 6 and 7. It is also possible to use the syringe without engaging the tabs and withdraw the plunger so that it is just below the barrel flange. A total of five different doses will be given (of which only four doses require the use of a tab).
In another embodiment, the syringe allows the amount to be fed to be preset by using some blocking rib located inside the piston, which interacts with a recess at the upper end of the barrel. The position of the ribs is related to the amount to be fed. The lowest rib allows 2.5ml to be sucked out of the bottle and then the rib of the piston will be blocked at the upper end of the barrel.
In certain aspects and embodiments, the syringe is intended for use with a drug syrup.
Although illustrative embodiments of the present invention have been disclosed in detail herein with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise embodiments shown, and that various changes and modifications may be effected therein by one skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention.
