Abstract
A small household appliance, in particular a kettle, has a tank for receiving, in use, a liquid to be heated. A substantially planar heating plate (15) is arranged to be able to heat the liquid in the tank, and a heating element (16) is arranged to heat the heating plate in use. The operation of the heating element (16) is controlled by an electrical or electronic control means. A baffle (18) for deflecting heat and protecting the control circuitry is located between the heating element and the electrical or electronic control device.
Description
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a small domestic appliance, particularly but not exclusively a kettle having a tank/well/tank for receiving, in use, liquid to be heated, provided with a heating plate arranged to be able to heat the liquid in the tank, provided with a heating element to heat the heating plate in use.
Background
Many small household appliances, such as kettles, milk foamers, baby bottle warmers and double layer steamers, are provided with a heating element, either inside or outside of a cavity which, in use, receives the liquid to be heated. An example of a kettle having a heating element within a cavity is disclosed in GB 824776. This type of kettle has not been favored because the non-flat surfaces of the cavity are prone to scaling in hard water areas.
At some point in the life of a small household appliance, the heating element will fail beyond its design life or due to external environmental factors. Sometimes, failure of the heating element can result in cracking of the element housing. This always results in the appliance no longer operating and there is often a noticeable trace of soot on the inside or working surface of the appliance housing.
More sudden failures are possible, particularly for cheaper appliances, and it is known that there is no way to drain the hot material onto the housing. In the case of plastic housings, in extreme cases, the hot material may even cause melting of the housing.
EP16497912 discloses a kettle which seeks to reduce air pockets in the kettle and hence noise by introducing an angle into the heating plate. The angled surfaces cause new problems in connection with the installation of two safety disconnector bimetal plates.
In particular replaceable heating elements for kettles are also becoming increasingly popular. Most heating elements on the market (such as shown in GB2499057 or GB 2336986) are sheathed and more complex to replace. Consumers often purchase their own kettles and ovens, but especially in hard water areas, the life of the unit can be expected to be shorter than that of an oven. Ideally, the heating element should be replaceable when worn out, as consumers prefer to keep a complete kettle and oven. An example of such a jug is shown in GB 2524872.
The present invention therefore seeks to provide a design which is advantageous in extending the life of a kettle or small domestic appliance.
Disclosure of Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a small domestic appliance having a tank for receiving, in use, liquid to be heated, there being provided a heating plate arranged to be able to heat the liquid in the tank, a heating element arranged to heat the heating plate in use, the operation of the heating element being controlled by control electronics, wherein a baffle for deflecting heat and protecting the control circuitry is located between the heating element and the control electronics.
Preferably, the baffle comprises a channel connected to the heating plate and spatially separated from the heating element. Preferably, the baffle comprises a plate-like structure located between the heating element and the control electronics.
The design of the present invention also acts as a heat deflector and reduces heat loss through the bottom of the kettle, thereby improving the efficiency of the device.
Drawings
An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
figure 1 shows an exploded view of a prior art kettle,
figure 2 shows an exploded view of the base structure of the kettle according to the invention,
fig. 3 shows an alternative embodiment.
Detailed Description
Figure 1 shows an exploded view of a prior art kettle comprising a body assembly 1, a pressure seal assembly unit 2, a C-clip 3 and a lower base (bottom base) 4. The C-clip 3 and the sub-mount 4 may be a single unit. The pressure seal assembly unit 2 comprises a planar element 5 having a circumferential seal 6 and an electrical connection 7 to enable power to be supplied to the planar element 5. The jug is assembled by inserting the pressure seal assembly unit into the tank so that the planar element 5, together with the circumferential seal, forms the base of the sump of the jug, ensuring a waterproof seal. The C-clip is fitted into place to hold the component subassembly in place. The component protector and other internal parts are assembled, and then the lower base 4 is assembled. Additional screws can now be passed through the base and fitted into the assembled control device. The assembly of the jug requires the use of special assembly fixtures to ensure that the parts are not misaligned.
Figure 2 shows an exploded inverted view of the base structure of the kettle showing the substantially planar heating plate 15 which together with the substantially annular heating element 16 mounted on the surface of the heating plate 15 forms the base of the kettle's sink. The heating element comprises a coiled wire inside the tube as shown, wherein the space between the inner surface of the tube and the wire is filled with magnesium powder. The heating plate 15 is held in place by means of the holding element 13 and the heating element is powered and controlled by an element controller/power connector 17. The annular heating element is covered by a baffle 18. The baffle is formed of a high temperature resistant non-combustible material such as steel. The baffle 18 may also be provided with an intumescent coating or formed from an intumescent material. The baffle is fixed to the heating plate with a 3-4mm gap from the heating element 16 so that the baffle can deflect and/or collect debris generated by the heating element. The baffle itself is typically about 0.5mm thick. The heating element 16 comprises a conductor with a ceramic coating.
Fig. 3 shows an alternative baffle design to the baffle design of fig. 2, in which the baffle 28 is substantially flat and occupies the space between the inner and outer radii of the jug base structure, thus having a circular shape. The baffle 28 is also formed of a non-combustible material. The baffle 28 may also be shaped to follow the contour of the kettle body.
In yet another embodiment of the embodiment of fig. 3, the baffle 28 is cup-shaped.
The invention can also be incorporated into other small household appliances having heating elements, such as milk bubblers, bottle heaters and double-layer steamers.
