Technical Field
The invention relates to a safety device, in particular to a safety temperature limiter applying high voltage.
Background
In railway heating systems, the air conditioner or the electric heating device often supplies 1500V in view of the power required for this function. This requires a fail-safe means in addition to temperature control to avoid the risk of fire in the event of a heating or temperature control system failure.
The safety device typically includes a temperature sensing wand heated by a heating system placed in the air, which causes the limiter to fail, resulting in a trip.
One of the difficulties with thermostat operation at high voltages is that this distance must separate the contacts when they are open, a common thermostat mechanism for low voltage circuits, such as 110V,220V,240V or even 400V, only separates the contacts to 0.3mm-0.5mm, a distance known by the electrical standard as "micro-break", such as the EN 60730 standard for temperature control. In the case of a complete disconnection, they must be greater than 3 mm. In contact systems used between 1500V and 1800V, in particular for safety temperature limiters, these distances must be much greater, about 14mm, these values being given by the EN 50124-1 standard. The conventional assembly of these devices causes them to melt or trigger the protective fuses of the air conditioning or heating circuit if they are shorted by overheating between the phase and neutral wires.
A difficulty is therefore to realise a system that provides this distance between the contacts when they are open, since the displacement provided by the usual mechanical means of thermostat and limiter is typically less than a few millimetres.
The latest solution currently exists for fusible alloys to be made by melting at the required temperature.
Of the problems that occur with these systems using fusible alloys, four are of critical importance:
first, it meets the ROHS and Reach standards and the use of lead and cadmium, two metals used in low temperature fusible alloys, such as those used in these products, is now prohibited.
Second, creep of these alloys, which gradually deforms when subjected to permanent stress. The fusible fuse is then gradually reduced, followed by a reduction in the contact gap distance, which then decreases below the required minimum value, a function that requires periodic replacement of the fusible sleeve.
Third, susceptibility to atmospheric contamination of the fusible alloy, corrosion which can impair the performance of the fusible alloy, particularly in humid or contaminated atmospheres.
Fourth, the sensitivity of the fusible to radiation generated by the heat-generating element depends on the temperature of the convective air. To overcome this disadvantage, which may lead to a fault trip, the known devices are usually equipped with a cap, which is positioned above the fusible sleeve and protects it from radiation.
Problems two and three require frequent and expensive preventive maintenance operations on the railway vehicle.
