Description

Real-time adjustable window feature for barcode scanning and process for scanning barcodes with adjustable window feature
CROSS-REFERENCE TO PRIORITY APPLICATIONS
This U.S. non-provisional application claims the benefit of U.S. patent application No. 62/098,072 for Real-Time Adjustable Window Feature for Bar code Scanning and Process of Scanning Bar code with Adjustable Window Feature (filed 12, 30, 2014), which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a mobile barcode scanning device and a process of scanning barcodes.
Background
There is a problem common to barcode scanning systems when multiple barcodes are close to each other and the user wants to scan only one of the barcodes. Most barcode decoding solutions are not able to align (target) a particular barcode within the field of view when other barcodes are nearby, so all barcode decoding information may be returned to the business logic.
One solution to this problem relies on business logic to discern which barcode is needed, but sometimes this may not be possible due to the similarity of the scanned barcodes.
Another solution to this problem may be to define a window within the field of view of the barcode scanning device within which decoding can only occur. However, this solution is not very flexible and may require frequent changes in size.
Accordingly, there is a need for a barcode scanning process and apparatus that can be flexibly adjusted to scan only a desired barcode.

In another aspect, the invention includes a process for scanning a barcode with a mobile device.
A mobile device has an embedded camera and a user interface system. A visual display is provided for a user interface system. The user interface system is configured to allow a user to access (access) features of the mobile device with touch gestures on the visual display. A mobile barcode scanning device is also provided with a barcode scanning application and an operating system. The operating system is communicatively coupled to the embedded camera, the barcode scanning application, and the user interface system. The visual display provides a viewfinder for the embedded camera. The viewfinder has a user-defined graphical window in which the barcode to be scanned and successfully decoded must be at least partially included when the barcode scanning application begins scanning. The graphical window is adjustable in size, orientation, and position by a two-point touch gesture of a user moving the barcode scanning device.
The process comprises the steps of: (i) initializing a barcode scanning application; (ii) displaying a camera viewfinder on a visual display; (iii) superimposing a user-defined graphical window in the viewfinder; (iv) defining in real time the size, orientation and position of a graphical window in the viewfinder by a two-point touch gesture of a user to at least partially include a barcode to be scanned and decoded in the viewfinder; and (v) decoding any bar code within the graphical window.
In an exemplary embodiment, the defining step is accomplished by resizing, reorienting and repositioning the graphical window to the size, orientation and position of two points in real time by a two-point touch gesture. Thus, the bar code to be scanned may be defined in the adjustable graphical window by the user in real time.
In another exemplary embodiment, the two-point touch gesture is a two-finger pinch gesture.
In another exemplary embodiment, at least a portion of the defining step is accomplished by eye tracking capabilities of the mobile device. Detailed Description
The present invention now will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein. In the drawings, like numerals refer to like elements throughout.
In one aspect, the present invention includes a feature on a mobile barcode scanning device for adjusting a user-defined barcode scanning window in real-time.
Referring now to FIG. 1, an exemplary mobile barcode scanning device 10 is provided with an embedded camera 11, a user interface system 12, which includes a visual display 18, a barcode scanning application 13, and an operating system 14. User interface system 12 is configured to allow a user to access features of mobile barcode scanning device 10 with touch gestures on visual display 18. The operating system 14 communicatively links the embedded camera 11, the user interface system 12, and the barcode scanning application 13. The barcode scanning application 13 may be initiated by the action of the user moving the barcode scanning device 10. The mobile barcode scanning device 10 may be provided with a system bus 15 that facilitates the communicative linking of the operating system 14 to other components. Other interface circuits and components may also be present, such as a memory (not shown) or the like.
As previously discussed, the barcode scanning application 13 may be initiated by the action of the user moving the barcode scanning device 10. The user's actions may include voice commands, swiping motions of a stylus across the visual display 18, touch gestures on the visual display 18, physical motions of moving the barcode scanning device 10, or a combination of any of these. Alternatively, the barcode scanning application 13 may be provided with application logic 25 that performs the required data processing of the barcode scanning application 13. Initialization of the barcode application 13 may be accomplished by the application logic 25.
The mobile barcode scanning device 10 may also include a front-facing camera 16 and image processing software 17 to provide eye tracking capabilities to the mobile barcode scanning device 10. The operating system 14 is communicatively coupled to a front-facing camera 16 and image processing software 17.
The mobile barcode scanning 10 device may be a smartphone, a smart watch, or a tablet.
Referring now to fig. 2A and 2B, in an exemplary embodiment of an inventive feature, the mobile barcode scanning device 10 shown in the block diagram of fig. 1 before the graphical window 20 is adjusted for size, position and orientation is schematically shown in fig. 2A, and the mobile barcode scanning device 10 shown in the block diagram of fig. 1 after the graphical window 20 is adjusted for size, position and orientation is schematically shown in fig. 2B. Fig. 2A shows the mobile barcode scanning device 10 with the visual display 18 and the viewfinder 19 on the visual display 18 after a barcode application (not shown) has been initialized. The graphics window 20 is in the center of the viewfinder 19. The two barcodes 22 and 23 are close to each other in the viewfinder 19. The graphical window 20 includes the entire first bar code 22 and a portion of the adjacent second bar code 23. In fig. 2A and 2B, the barcode 23 is a barcode to be scanned and decoded. The user 43 is ready to adjust the graphical window 20.
Referring now to fig. 2B, the user 43 has moved the graphical window 20 to the right of the viewfinder 19, and has resized the graphical window 20 to include only the barcode 23 to be decoded. The user 43 uses the two-touch gesture 21 (e.g., the pinch gesture 21) to move and resize the graphical window 20 in real-time such that the graphical window 20 is sized, positioned, and oriented at the location of the two-touch gesture 21.
The two-touch gesture 21 may be a pinch gesture 21 as shown in FIG. 2B, but may alternatively be a two-touch gesture 21 or a multi-touch gesture (not shown) made with a stylus (not shown).
The barcode 23 to be decoded may be fully included by the graphical window 20, as shown in fig. 2B, or may be partially included by the graphical window 20, depending on how the barcode scanning application (not shown) is configured.
Referring now to FIG. 3, in another exemplary embodiment of a feature of the present invention, the mobile barcode scanning device 10 includes a front-facing camera 16 and image processing software (not shown in the figures). The front-facing camera 16 and image processing software cooperate to allow the mobile barcode scanning device 10 to have eye tracking capabilities, as is known in the art for smart mobile devices. A user (not shown) may reposition the graphical window 20 with eye movement. The user's eye 40A views the graphical window 20 at the first location 20A in a first orientation. Subsequently, the user focuses his eye 40B to a second position on the viewfinder 19, where the user wants to reposition the graphical window 20 from the initial position 20A to the second position 20B. In fig. 3, the user moves the graphical window 20 from the center of the viewfinder 19 from a first position 20A (where the graphical window 20 includes the barcode 22 and a portion of the barcode 23) to a second position 20B to the right of the viewfinder 19, effectively moving the graphical window 20 so that the barcode 22 is no longer in the graphical window 20 and the barcode 23 is fully included in the graphical window 20. In this way, the graphical window 20 can be repositioned on the viewfinder 19 in real time by moving the eye tracking capabilities of the barcode scanning device 10.
In another aspect, the invention includes a process for scanning a barcode with a mobile barcode scanning device having a real-time, user-defined adjustable window.
In the exemplary embodiment depicted as a flowchart in fig. 4, a process 30 for scanning a barcode with a mobile device is provided. An exemplary mobile device for use in this process has been described and illustrated in fig. 1-3, and in particular uses the features of a user-defined graphical window in which a barcode to be scanned and decoded must be at least partially included when a barcode scanning application begins scanning. The graphical window is adjustable in size, orientation, and position by a two-point touch gesture of a user of the mobile device. The process 30 includes the following steps: initializing the barcode scanning application 31; displaying a camera viewfinder 32 on the visual display; superimposing a user-defined graphical window 33 in the viewfinder; defining the size, orientation and position of the graphical window in the viewfinder in real time by a two-point touch gesture of the user to at least partially include the barcode 34 to be scanned and decoded in the viewfinder; and decoding 35 any bar code within the graphical window.
The defining step 34 is accomplished by resizing, reorienting and repositioning 36 the graphical window with a two-point touch gesture. The two-point touch gesture may resize, reorient, and reposition the graphical window to the size, orientation, and position of the two points in real time, whereby a barcode to be scanned and decoded may be defined in the adjustable graphical window by a user in real time. The two-touch gesture may be a pinch gesture with two fingers, a multi-touch gesture, or a two-touch gesture with a stylus.
The defining step 34 may be accomplished at least in part by the eye tracking capabilities of the mobile device. Eyeball tracking capability is provided through the cooperation of a front-facing camera and image processing software. Repositioning the graphical window may be accomplished by the eye tracking capabilities of the mobile device, as described above with respect to fig. 3.
The initialization step 31 may be accomplished by a physical action of the user, such as a voice command, a swiping motion of a stylus across a visual display, a touch gesture on a visual display, a physical motion of a mobile barcode scanning device, or a combination thereof.
Alternatively, application logic may be provided for a barcode scanning application. The application logic performs the required data processing for the barcode scanning application. For example, the initialization step 31 may be performed by application logic.
