Abstract

Clause 5 discloses a method of preparing a board, CHARACTERIZED because it comprises: (a) Form a pregelatinized partially hydrolyzed starch, i. mixing at least water, non-pregelatinized starch and an acid to form a wet starch precursor having a moisture content of about 8% by weight to about 25% by weight, where the acid is an acid that has a pKa value of 3 to 6 that substantially prevents chelating calcium ions: ii. Feed the wet starch precursor into an extruder; and iii. Pregelatinize and modify with acid the starch in the extruder that has a matrix at a temperature of about 150 ° C to about 210 ° C, where the partially hydrolyzed starch is at least about 70% gelatinized, and where the pregelatinized partially hydrolyzed starch has a cold water viscosity from about 10 BU (Bradenber Units) to about 120 BU, where the cold water viscosity is determined for a 10% by weight solution of starch at 25 ° C. (b) Mix the pregelatinized and partially hydrolyzed starch with at least water and stucco to form a suspension; (c) Arrange the suspension between a first cover sheet and a second cover sheet to form a wet assembly; (d) Cut the wet assembly on a board; and (e) Dry the board.
