5. Use according to claim 3 or 4, wherein the cosmetic composition comprises one or more other cosmetic active ingredients selected from the group consisting of other lightening agents, water-pouring agents, moisturizing agents and/or anti-aging agents.

6. Use according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the guarana extract comprises at least 4% methylxanthines calculated as caffeine, more preferably at least 5% and most preferably at least 6% methylxanthines calculated as caffeine.

7. A method of lightening human skin, comprising the step of topically applying a guarana extract to the skin.

The method according to claim 7, wherein a cosmetic composition comprising the guarana extract and a cosmetically acceptable carrier is topically applied to the skin.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the cosmetic composition contains from about 0.01% to about 1.00% of the guarana extract, more preferably from about 0.01% to about 0.10% and most preferably from about 0.02% to about 0.05%.
