The thickening or drying of a liquid (ex. Milk powder production from milk) is done by its heating and thus by the evaporation of the water contained therein. This process requires a lot of energy and is therefore only used in large-scale plants in order to be profitable at all. Likewise, various ingredients are damaged by the heating.
The reverse osmosis process is gentler, but can only be used to thicken a liquid to some degree and not to complete drying.

The following figures are intended to illustrate the system and the principle. It shows the

The plant consists of a liquid-tight container (1), a semipermeable membrane (2), a cleaning rod (3) and a drawing solution. The semipermeable membrane (2) separates the container interior into two spaces A and B. The semipermeable membrane (2) is movable relative to the container (1). The semipermeable membrane (2) is such that only water can pass through. It is also possible to install a membrane (2) that selectively lets through other substances for which it is designed. The contact surface of the membrane (2) to the container inner wall is water impermeable.
In the membrane structure, a conventionally available semipermeable membrane may be used, or a special one with surface enlargement by means of tubular or conical protuberances (4) towards the space A. The protuberances (4) are hollow inside, open against the room B, closed against the room A and made of semipermeable material. The protuberances (4) are regularly distributed over the entire membrane (2). This results in an enormous increase in the surface area and thereby an increase in the plant capacity.
So that the semipermeable membrane (2) is not clogged, a cleaning rod (3) is present, which is hollow inside and has holes against the semipermeable membrane (2). He is on the side of the room A and is parallel to the semi-permeable membrane (2) installed and movable. As the cleaning medium, water or air pressure may be used, which is pressed by the cleaning rod and sprayed on the semipermeable membrane (2) when activated.
Function: In the space A, the liquid to be dried is filled, in the room B, the osmotically active drawing solution (Ex. Highly concentrated NaCl solution). Because of the osmotic pressure, the water of the liquid in the room A flows through the semipermeable membrane (2) into the drawing solution of the room B. The water pressure moves the membrane (2) towards the room A. The room A is smaller, the room B larger. The drawing solution in the room B is continuously concentrated (Ex. Addition of NaCl) until the room A is dewatered to the desired concentration and the desired concentrate, respectively. Powder is present.
After completion of the process, the drawing solution must be re-dehydrated. This is done by evaporating or distilling the draw solution. Ideally, this happens through solar energy and, if necessary, with active energy input. This process can be slow and does not have to be done under sterile conditions. The advantage of the invention is the low direct energy consumption for the drainage of the liquid to be concentrated, as well as the gentle treatment of the ingredients. Furthermore, the plant can be well designed in small dimensions, so that it can be used directly by the producer of the liquid to be concentrated, such as the milk producer. There, the milk can be processed directly by the farmers to milk powder. This could massively reduce milk transports (over 90% water). In contrast to today, the traceability of the end product to the producer would be guaranteed. The farmer would have a durable product for sale, and could eliminate the intermediate trade. In addition, energy could also be gained with the step of forward osmosis.
The system is made of chrome steel to meet the requirements of food hygiene.
