Abstract
Description
With the present invention, an elastic connecting rod according to claim one is realized, which has different stiffness along its longitudinal axis. Elastic connecting rods are typically used in conjunction with pedicle screws for dynamic stabilization of spinal columns. If such a rod can be given a range of increased rigidity, then the indication area can be greatly expanded. A region of increased stiffness may then be used to fuse a vertebral body, while a region of lesser rigidity is used to elastically connect a neighboring segment.
The "golden standard" in spinal surgery today still consists in the fusion (stiffening) of pathological vertebral bodies. Stiffening, however, often results in premature degeneration of the segments adjacent to fusion. Therefore, efforts are underway to offer rods with different stiffnesses and to include adjacent segments in the surgical care.
The previously known approaches mainly affect combinations of metal and plastic rods, as shown below.
The invention according to patent application EP 1 719 468 connects a metal rod with a textile tape, which should act as an internal tensile structure in an external plastic cushion as connected dynamic stabilization.
The invention according to patent EP 1 815 812 offers at the end of a metal rod a receptacle for a connectable plastic rod.
Only the invention according to patent application US 2009/0 118 767 shows a connecting element with variable stiffness along its longitudinal axis. Here, the variable stiffness is limited to the area between two anchoring elements, by only the outer body of the connecting element is varied in its rigidity.
The invention described below accordingly has the task of offering a biocompatible plastic rod in such a way that the stiffness differs along its longitudinal axis in at least two areas.
A first solution to this problem is characterized in that rods of different stiffnesses are connected to the front side using suitable solvents.
A second solution to this problem is characterized in that rods of different stiffnesses are welded frontally. Heating methods (for example plates or mirrors), motion methods (for example vibration or ultrasound) or a combination of the two are possible.
A third solution to this problem is characterized in that granules of different stiffness in the injection molding process are sprayed against each other frontally.
The object of the invention is therefore defined in claim one rod with varying rigidity.
The present invention will be explained in more detail with reference to drawings, which represent only exemplary embodiments and in particular do not show the maximum possible number of different juxtaposed rigidities.
Schematically show: <Tb> FIG. 1 <sep> a point-symmetric rod with regions of different stiffnesses.
