The present invention relates to a rack and pinion gear according to the preamble of claim 1.
In order to convert a rotary motion into a linear motion and vice versa, so-called "racks are used as a transmission" since the time of industrialization. The peculiarity of such "gear" is the fact that the diameter of the pitch circle of a gear (namely the rack) is infinitely large, which means that the profile center line represents a straight line. The foot line, profile center line and head line all move at the same speed on parallel straight lines.
This principle use rack and pinion steering for cars, which are equipped with a so-called rack and pinion steering. These are simple and easy to maintain steering systems. In this construction, the end of the steering column is connected to a pinion, which engages in a rack and this laterally displaces upon rotation of the steering column fixed to the steering column. The rotational movement of the pinion is converted into a linear movement of the rack. At the two ends of the rack then the tie rods are connected via ball joints.
The disadvantage of such constructions is the uniformity of the motion transmission over the entire length of the rack. While the rack moves proportionally 1 [deg.] = X cm for each angle of rotation of the steering wheel, the tie rods describe a circular motion. That is, in the middle position, it takes little horizontal displacement of the rack to achieve a change in direction of the vehicle. However, the further the turning angle of the wheels deviates from the straight ahead, the more the rack has to travel to have the same effect. That when driving straight ahead, the steering is very direct, while for turning maneuvers in the curve area, the steering wheel must be further rotated to strike the wheels in the same mass.
However, this also means that in the area of straight-ahead driving the most power is needed to operate the "direct" steering. Of course, this can be corrected by the corresponding gear ratio between pinion and steering wheel diameter. In addition, modern vehicles are equipped with steering aids, so that the effort is less important.
Of importance, however, is the safety! For safety reasons, the steering must always be mechanically in operative engagement. This is back to the problem of many turns in the turning maneuver and / or too direct steering when driving straight ahead.
With the Wandfluh steering system presented in the patent applications EP0 915 002A1 and EP0 915 003A1, an attempt was made to seek a solution to this problem. Because so-called progressive steering such as e.g. Although consciously integrated "gimbal errors" and emotionally incomprehensible different forces occur in the Wandfluh steering system, one obtains steering systems with a variable transmission ratio, but buys the disadvantage of inharmonic torque and setting angle, which are not suitable for the average consumer. A recent attempt to address this problem has been made with WO2006 / 079492A1. In this construction, the force applied is obviously irregular over the 360 ° steering angle. In addition, the construction of such a device might be difficult for economic reasons.
The present invention now has the object to improve a rack gear of the type mentioned in such a way that the advantages of the known progressive steering systems are maintained. The translation of the steering should be adjustable over the entire range. In terms of torque (force) and impact of the wheels steering over the entire range of rotation of the steering wheel from one stop to another should be able to be set harmoniously and logically.
This object is achieved by a rack and pinion gear with the features of claim 1. Further inventive features will become apparent from the dependent claims and the advantages thereof are explained in the following description.

The figures represent preferred exemplary embodiment proposals, which are explained in the following description as examples.
Normally, a rack 1 with teeth 2 of equal pitch, which are arranged on a straight profile center line 20, and a spur gear 10 used as a pinion gear for a rack and pinion. Although one also knows racks 1 with curved profile center lines 20, but the translation remains the same over the entire range of engagement. Now, if a bevel gear is used as the pinion 10, the teeth 11 of the bevel gear formed as a pinion 10 over its length different sizes and thus different spreads. This fact is exploited by the invention by forming the profile center line 20 on the rack 1 like an arch (FIGS. 1, 2 and 3). Depending on the position on the x-axis, the teeth 2 of the rack 1 are formed differently so that they correspond to the size of the teeth 11 of the pinion 10 at the respective position.
All teeth 2 of the rack 1 are thus on a profile center line 20. Depending on the position on the x-axis, in which the position of the correspondingly formed teeth 2 of the rack 1 with the teeth 11 of the pinion 10 are engaged changes the shape of the teeth 2 of the rack 1. They are adapted to the pitch of the teeth 11 of the pinion at the respective position. Depending on this, the transmission ratio (FIG. 1) between the rack 1 and the pinion 10 changes. The width 3 of the teeth 2 of the rack 1 is smaller than the length 12 of the teeth 11 of the pinion 10.
By the choice of the curvature respectively of the curve of the profile center line 20, the transmission ratio between the pinion 10 and the rack 1 is determined depending on the position of the teeth on the x-axis. For the course of the Profilmitellelline 20 any curve can be selected. You will choose the translation due to the compensation of, depending on the position of the wheels different angle geometry of the stub axle, and the force preferably desired on the steering wheel.
The curve of the profile centerline 20 on the rack 1 is set entprechenden for the use of the rack and pinion requirements. Depending on this, these are geometric conditions, loads on the gearbox, needs of comfort or other reasons.
