General state of the art
The present invention relates to steam turbines having seals between rotating and non-rotating components, and more particularly to seal configurations received in integral shrouds of grouped vanes in a reaction turbine.
Each stage of a reaction steam turbine comprises a plurality of circumferentially projecting blades mounted on a drum rotor surrounded by a plurality of stationary reaction vanes. The blades and nozzles form a stage of the turbine and define the main steam flow path. In contrast, in a constant pressure turbine, the blades are mounted on the periphery of rotor wheels and the nozzle separations are carried in surrounding diaphragms. In any case, it is very desirable to minimize or eliminate as many steam leakage paths as possible from the main steam flow path.
A leak source in a reaction turbine is a radial gap between grouped sets of reaction vanes, which are provided with integral shrouds and face radially outer portions of the rotor. One known technique for sealing this radial gap involves the use of insertable strip seals on the rotor which face sealing surfaces on the reaction stator shrouds which have been sprayed with an abradable coating. Another prior art technique involves receiving radially projecting labyrinth teeth at the inner free ends of the nozzle or vanes that form labyrinth seals with radially opposed component parts of the turbine rotor. See, for example, U.S. Public Patent No. 6,786,699.
The combination of labyrinth seal teeth with brush seals has also been used at the interface between inner membrane membranes at the radially inner ends of nozzle separations and rotor surfaces in constant pressure turbines. See, for example, U.S. Pat. No. 6,669,443 and U.S. Pat. No. 6,290,232.
However, there is still a need for effective seal configurations for use with clustered reaction turbine vanes having integral shrouds that effectively reduce the radial gap between the shrouds and the opposing rotor surfaces.
Brief description of the invention
This object is solved by the features of claim 1.
The present invention is directed to new seal configurations for grouped reaction vane segments with integral shrouds. The embodiments relate to integrated one-piece stator vane segments having many blades and seal configurations that may include a combination of strip seals, brush seals, or integral seal teeth facing rotor sealing surfaces in the assembled steam turbine.
For purposes of this invention, the term "grouped reaction stator blades with integral shrouds" refers to multiple (2 or more, and up to about 50) reaction turbine vanes with integral shrouds that have been grouped together, by machining as a single piece or Unit group where two or more groups form a 360 ° ring; or by soldering or brazing individual blades to form a group where two or more groups also form a 360 ° ring.
In a first configuration, a machined one-piece vane segment includes a plurality of blades, an integral shroud, and an integral dovetail (or other mounting configuration). The stator shroud extends over the plurality of blades thereby connecting their tips and is provided with a generally centered insert. The insert includes a brush seal, and the insert is flanked by conventionally caulked strip seals before and after the brush seal. In a second configuration example, the integral stator shroud is provided with a generally axially centered (i.e., in a flow direction) insert having a brush seal with integrally machined labyrinth seal teeth located before and after the insert.
In a third configuration, the stator cover strip is machined to include a dovetail slot into which a weather strip device can be inserted. The insertable weather strip device is provided with an axially centered brush seal having integral labyrinth seal teeth before and after the brush seal.
For all of these configurations, the opposing rotor surface may be machined to include a high-low-high area configuration or a low-high-low area configuration to accommodate a similar seal arrangement in the shrouds. Additionally, the specific number of seals, the opposing sealing surfaces and the selection of specific seals and / or the combination of seals may vary based on specific application.
Accordingly, in its general aspects, the present invention relates to a reaction turbine vane segment comprising: an integral array of a plurality of blades, an arcuate shroud connected between radially inner tips of the blades, and an arcuate mounting portion extending across extending radially outer tips of the blades, wherein the arcuate shroud with a plurality of sealing components, which extend from the shroud extending radially inwardly, is formed.
In another aspect, the invention relates to a reaction turbine vane segment comprising: a singly machined array of multiple vanes, an arcuate shroud connected between radially inner tips of the vanes, and an arcuate mounting section extending radially outer tips of the vanes extend, the arcuate shroud having a plurality of sealing components extending radially inward from the shroud, the plurality of sealing components comprising a brush seal insert disposed in a notch in the shroud with additional sealing components on opposite sides of the brush seal is included.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to the drawings below.

<Tb> FIG. Fig. 2 is a partial end elevation of a grouped reaction vane segment receiving a seal configuration according to a first embodiment of the invention;
<Tb> FIG. Fig. 3 is a partial end elevation of a grouped reaction vane segment receiving a seal configuration according to a second embodiment of the invention; and

Detailed description of the invention
Referring to Figure 1, a clustered reaction vane segment 10 includes a plurality of reaction vanes 12, an integral arcuate shroud 14 at the radially inner ends of the vanes, and a dovetail or other mounting configuration 15 at the radial outer ends of the vanes. While the figure shows a group of four blades 12, it will be understood that the segment may comprise other numbers of blades, for example 6, 8, 12, up to 50 blades or more, forming a 180 ° segment , Two or more such segments form a closed 360 ° ring with reaction blades.
In the preferred arrangement, the segment 14 is made of a single block of metal material, preferably a stainless steel alloy, but individual blades may also be grouped by welding, brazing or other suitable means to form a segment.
As far as Fig. 2 is concerned, the segment 10 and in particular the shroud 14 is provided with a combined strip and brush seal arrangement. In particular, a brush seal insert 16 is slidably received in a notch 18 formed in a radially inner surface 19 of the shroud 14. The insert includes brush seals 20 that extend radially inward to a location closely adjacent a surface 22 on the turbine rotor 24. A pair of strip seals 26, 28 are located in respective notches 30, 32 in the face 19 of the shroud on opposite sides of the brush seal insert and are secured by, for example, hammering. These strip seals extend inwardly with the tips closely adjacent respective surfaces 34, 36 of the rotor 24.
It should be noted that the strip seals 26, 28 respectively lie before and after the generally axially centered brush seal 16 (with respect to the direction of the vapor flow) in a high-low-high arrangement relative to the turbine surfaces. It will be appreciated that the turbine surface configuration can be reversed with a corresponding reordering of sealing tips into a low-high-low configuration.
Fig. 3 illustrates an alternative arrangement in conjunction with a reaction vane segment 38. In this embodiment, the shroud 40 is secured to a generally axially centered brush seal insert 42 located in a notch 43 in the radially inner surface 44 of the shroud is formed, with brush seal elements 45, which are similar to the insert 16 in Fig. 2. Labyrinth seal teeth 46, 48 are each formed integrally with the shroud 40 and lie before and after the brush seal insert 42, thereby interacting with surfaces 50 and 52 on the rotor 54. The brush seal members 44 extend inwardly toward a turbine surface 56. Again, a high-low-high-area configuration is shown, however, as in the case of FIG. 2, this configuration may be reversed to a low-high-low arrangement ,
Fig. 4 illustrates yet another embodiment of the invention in which the reaction blade segment 58 comprises: an integrated shroud 60, the radially inner surface 61 of which is formed with a dovetail-like notch 62 which receives a weather strip mounting insert 64. The insert 64 is provided with a generally axially centered brush seal 66 having brush seals 68 extending inwardly to a location closely adjacent the turbine face 70. The insert 64 is also formed with integrated pre and post-labyrinth seal teeth 72, 74 that extend radially inward to a location closely adjacent respective surfaces 76, 78 of the rotor 80.
As in the previous embodiments, the high-low-high area configuration can be reversed to a low-high-low configuration with a corresponding change in the sealing elements. It can be seen that the labyrinth seal teeth 72, 74 can be replaced by strip seals similar to those in FIG.
The sealing configurations described above reduce the radial gap between the rotor and the reaction vane shrouds while reducing assembly time for the rotor and eliminating the need for an abradable coating on the integral shroud of the reaction stator. It will be appreciated that the shrouds may receive seals and / or gaskets with any combination of strip seals, brush seals or labyrinth seal teeth.
While the invention has been described in conjunction with what is hereby considered to be the most practical and advantageous embodiment, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiment but, quite the contrary, is intended to provide various modifications and advantages to cover similar arrangements, which are within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
