The present invention relates to a sandblasting machine comprising at least one sand tank, a pipe into which is introduced the sand mixed with pressurized air, a sandblasting nozzle and means for producing ice, these means being formed a water supply and a pressurized gas supply.
There are currently sandblasting machines in which sand is mixed with ice before being ejected under pressure. This ice is produced by introducing water into a pipe in which the sand circulates, then by introducing a gas such as CO 2 under high pressure into this pipe. The expansion of the gas produces a sudden lowering of the temperature and the freezing of the water.
When sandblasting machines are used, sand ejection is often interrupted by the user. During periods of interruption, ice builds up in the hose until it is completely blocked. This stops the machine until the ice has completely melted or has been mechanically removed.
On the other hand, before the pipe is completely blocked, it often happens that blocks of ice come off under the action of the sand circulating in the pipe. These ice blocks melt when they have been ejected and wet the support or its environment, which is not desirable in certain applications.
Finally, the mixture of sand and ice is not homogeneous. It therefore frequently happens that sand is ejected without ice or ice without sand, which reduces the advantage of the process.
The present invention proposes to overcome these drawbacks by providing a sandblasting machine in which the mixture of sand and ice is homogeneous and in which ice does not accumulate in the pipe.
These objects are achieved by a machine as defined in claim 1, and characterized in that it also comprises an ice-crushing device.
The present invention and its advantages will be better understood with reference to the description of an embodiment of the invention and the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a partial schematic sectional view of a sandblasting machine according to the invention, and FIG. 2 is a front view of a detail of the machine of FIG. 1.
With reference to these figures, the machine 10 essentially comprises a sand reservoir 11, a pipe 12, a sandblasting nozzle 13 and an ice grinding device 14.
Conventionally, sand and pressurized air are introduced from the reservoir 11 into the pipe 12 and are ejected by the sandblasting nozzle 13.
The ice grinding device 14 is arranged on the pipe. It comprises a frame 15 in which are housed grinding elements 16, which are four in number in the example illustrated. These grinding elements 16 are formed by an axis 17 on which are fixed grinding members such as rods 18 or blades. The axes 17 and the rods 18 are arranged such that the rods of an element 16 are close to the rods of the adjacent elements.
The axes 17 of the grinding elements pass through the frame 15 and are integral with a wheel such as a pulley 19 or a toothed wheel. The pulleys are driven by a motor 20 so that starting the motor causes the grinding elements and their rods to rotate.
The frame has a water inlet 21, arranged towards the top of the frame, and an inlet 22 for gas such as CO 2 under pressure. A heating body 28 is placed around the water inlet 21 and maintains this inlet at a temperature above zero degrees.
The frame has an opening 23 in contact with the interior of the pipe. The interior of the pipe has a conical piece 24 having a large opening 25 on the side of the reservoir 11 and a small opening 26 on the side of the nozzle 13.
The pipe 12 also has several air inlets 27 arranged near the large opening 25 of the conical part. These air inlets connect the outside of the pipe to the outside of the conical part.
The machine according to the invention operates in the following manner. Sand and pressurized air are introduced from the reservoir 11 into the pipe 12. The sand and the air pass through the conical part 24 in the direction of the nozzle 13.
Water is introduced into the frame 15 of the grinding device 14, at the top of the latter, by the water inlet 21. Pressurized gas is also introduced into this frame by the gas inlet 22. This gas can be CO 2 at a pressure of around 25 bars, for example, or liquid nitrogen or any other compound which is sufficiently cool to cause the water to freeze. Upon its arrival in the frame, the gas expands and causes cooling, which causes the water to freeze. The heater 28 keeps the area near the water inlet 21 at a temperature above zero degrees so that the water does not freeze in this area and the water inlet does not get clogged.
In addition, when water is not injected into the grinding device, air is introduced therein via the water inlet 21 in order to prevent water from stagnating in this inlet.
The ice thus formed falls into the grinding device, towards the pipe. This ice is crushed between the rods 18 which are rotated by means of the motor 20, the pulleys 19 and the pins 17. In this way, the ice does not settle and the pieces of ice have a dimension less than l '' rod spacing.
The air passages 27 entrain the ice which falls in the pipe towards the nozzle 13 and prevent it from being deposited on the conical piece 24. The ice is then mixed with the sand in a particularly homogeneous manner. The mixture is then sprayed onto the support to be sanded.
Due to their particularly small size, the ice particles sublimate when they come into contact with the support. Thus, the support or its environment is not at all wet or only very slightly wet.
The present invention is not limited to the embodiment described, but extends to any modification or variant obvious to a person skilled in the art. In particular, the number of grinding elements can be variable, as can the number of rods and their spacing.
