The invention relates to a tool provided with means for gripping mechanical parts, in particular a screwdriver.
When it is a question of installing a screw, when possible, the screw is held and positioned with one hand at the entrance of the hole or of the tapping in which it is then screwed by means of a screwdriver held on the other hand. However, it happens relatively frequently that access to the hole or the tapping is difficult, even impossible for the hand, due to the smallness of the space surrounding the hole or the tapping. In this case, the user must use a special tool to hold the screw, for example needle nose pliers or a tool specially designed for this purpose. Even in this case, the holding of the screw can be delicate, in particular if the access to the screw has an elbow or other obstacle. It is possible to get out of trouble if the screwdriver and the screw are made of ferromagnetic material, one of which has a remanent magnetization.
This is however not always the case by far and, moreover, magnetization of the screw and / or the screwdriver is often not desirable.
The invention aims to solve this problem in a simple and effective manner.
To this end, the tool according to the invention is characterized in that said gripping means at the end of the tip have an annular groove in which is housed a ring of elastically deformable material, slightly protruding outside of the groove, so as to be pressed into the groove by the mechanical part to be grasped when the mechanical part to be grasped and the end of the tool are engaged one inside the other.
When the mechanical part is engaged on, or as the case may be, in the end of the tool, by compressing the ring, it is held by friction by the elastic ring.
The tool can be, for example, a screwdriver, an open-end or pipe wrench or a tool whose end is simply cylindrical smooth, tubular or solid.
The mechanical part can be, for example a screw, a nut, a cylindrical spacer or a washer and, in general, any solid or hollow part around which or in which the elastic ring can be fixed by deformation and friction . A washer or a cylindrical spacer will, for example, be gripped by a tubular tool for positioning around a screw.
The invention is in particular applicable to all types of screwdrivers and particularly to screwdrivers having a polygonal or cylindrical section, exterior or interior.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the invention, as well as a particular application of this embodiment.
Fig. 1 shows, in partial section, the end of a screwdriver for internal hexagon screws.
Fig. 2 is an end view of this screwdriver.
Fig. 3 illustrates an example of use of the invention on a cardan screwdriver.
The screwdriver partially shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has a cylindrical body 1, a part of hexagonal section 2 and an end 5 of circular section whose circumference is a circle of diameter equal to or less than the diameter of the circle inscribed in the hexagon of the hexagonal section 2. Between the part 5 and the hexagonal section part 2 is formed an annular groove 3 in which is housed an O-ring 4 made of elastically deformable synthetic material, for example synthetic rubber or silicone. The outer diameter of this ring is such that it slightly exceeds the periphery of the end 5 of the screwdriver. This feature has the effect of facilitating the engagement of the ring 4 in the hollow of an internal hexagon screw.
To grab a screw, simply insert the end of the screwdriver into the hollow of the screw. This introduction can be done in any angular position of the screwdriver relative to the screw, since the end 5 has a diameter less than the diameter of the circle inscribed in the hexagon of the screw, the latter always being greater than the screwdriver hexagon. On the other hand, the faces of the hexagonal recess of the screw press on the ring 4 which deforms elastically in the groove 3 and retain the screw by friction. The screwdriver can then be manipulated in all directions with its screw without it escaping from the screwdriver. When screwing, the hexagonal part 2 of the screwdriver quickly coincides with the housing of the screw and engages in it.
Fig. 3 illustrates an example of application of the invention. The screwdriver here is a cardan screwdriver 6 at the end of which is fixed a screw 7 which it is desired to screw into a hole 8 of a body 9, for example a bone. The groove is here formed in the hexagonal part and the elastic ring exceeds the hexagonal section.
The groove 3 can of course have a section other than circular and the same applies to the ring 4. The shape of the ring does not necessarily have to be circular.
In the case of a screwdriver for an external hexagon screw or other polygonal shape, the ring 4 would be inside the screwdriver and the construction according to FIG. 1 could be adapted so that the end part of the screwdriver located beyond the ring 4 is of circular section with a diameter equal to or greater than the diameter of the circle inscribed in the hexagon of the hexagonal part of the screwdriver.
