EMI1.1

The invention includes the new 4.4 min - (phenylenediisopropyl) bis (2,6-dialkylphenyl isocyanate) of the general formula
EMI1.1
wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and represent a (C1-C4) alkyl group and R3 represents hydrogen or a halogen atom and the central phenylene function is substituted in the 1,3- or 1,4-position. The invention also includes a process for the preparation of the new compounds and their use in the production of polyurethane or the production of polyurethane / polyurea. In the following, the urea-based polyurethanes are also referred to as polyurethanes.
TDI (tolylene diisocyanate) and MDI (methylenebisaniline diisocyanate) are considered classic isocyanates in polyurethane production (cf. Ullmanns Enzyklopadie der techn. Chemie, 4th edition, vol. 19, p. 301 ff.). Although TDI and MDI are used to build up most types of polyurethane, such as foams, elastomers, cast resins, etc., their use has certain disadvantages.
The toxicity of these aromatic isocyanates is quite high and accordingly requires considerable measures for the safe handling of these compounds. The achievable flexibility of polyurethanes based on TDI or MDI, especially of types for the RIM sector, is also very limited. It can only be partially compensated for by modifying the polyol component.
The pot lives that can be achieved with MDI and TDI are also relatively short, so that there is correspondingly little time available for processing the polyurethane. As a result, the size of the component that can still be processed is considerably limited, particularly in the RIM process.
The task was therefore to develop isocyanates which do not have the disadvantages mentioned. The problem was solved with the new 4.4 min - (phenylenediisopropyl) bis (2,6-dialkylphenyl isocyanates) according to claim 1.
With low toxicity, these compounds lead to excellent physical property profiles of the polyurethane. In particular, polyurethanes which are based on the diisocyanates according to the invention are distinguished by very good flexibility, high resistance to aging and high chemical resistance. The pot lives can also be extended to such a degree that a reasonable processing time is possible throughout.
A methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl, i-butyl or t-butyl group is expediently used as the (C1-C4) alkyl group for R1 and R2. In the case where R1 and R2 have different meanings, the alkyl groups mentioned can be varied as desired. Preferred combinations for R1 not equal to R2 are methyl and ethyl or methyl and i-propyl. If R1 and R2 have the same meaning, in principle all of the alkyl groups mentioned can be used; R1 and R2 are preferably methyl, ethyl or i-propyl.
R3 in the meaning of halogen can stand for fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine. The preferred halogen is chlorine.
In principle, R3 in the meaning of halogen can enter into all of the combinations mentioned with R1 and R2. The preferred combination is then R3 chlorine with R1 and R2 equal to ethyl.
Particularly preferred compounds are:
- 4.4 min - (phenylene-1,3-diisopropyl) bis (2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl isocyanate)
- 4.4 min - (phenylene-1,3-diisopropyl) bis (2,6-diethylphenyl isocyanate)

The preparation of the isocyanates according to the invention can be carried out in a known manner analogously to the regulation by H. Eckert et al. Appl. Chem. 1987, 99, 922. Accordingly, a phenylene diisopropyl bisaniline of the general formula

wherein R1, R2 and R3 have the meaning given in the presence of a nucleophilic compound with phosgene or a phosgene replacement compound. The reaction is preferably carried out with the phosgene replacement compound triphosgene, which is largely stable as a solid and, in contrast to phosgene, can be used without the customary safety precautions.
As a nucleophilic compound, a tert is conveniently found. Amine such as Pyridine or a tri- (C1-C4) alkylamine application. A tri (C1-C4) alkylamine such as e.g. Triethylamine used. However, it is also possible to use a nucleophilic compound instead of a tert. Amine use the phenylenediisopropylbisaniline in excess.
The reaction conditions correspond to those in H. Eckert et al. loc. cit. described. The resulting isocyanate of the general formula I can be e.g. can be isolated by extraction from the reaction mixture with good yields of over 90%.
