Abstract

For sterilisation of packaging material (2), especially of web-like packaging material (2), the surface to be sterilised is wetted with a liquid which has a high concentration of OH' radicals. This liquid is produced in an electrochemical cell (11). The OH' radicals are very potent oxidants which effect sterilisation within a few seconds without leaving any residues on the packaging material. By adjusting the pH to values between 7.5 and 9 during wetting or shortly beforehand the concentration of OH' radicals can be increased still further. <IMAGE>
