Description
DESCRIPTION The invention relates to a process for the removal and recovery of undissolved organic substances and any dissolved organic substances present from water using a column filled with an adsorber resin.
In many industrial sectors, preferably in the chemical industry, waste water is produced which contains mineral oils, paraffin oils, long-chain alcohols or compounds such as alkylbenzenes etc. These substances are only soluble in water to a very small extent and are often present in finely divided droplet form in the water.
Waste water with mixtures of alkylbenzene / paraffin oil fall z. B. both vacuum distillation for cleaning Vorproduk-5 th for the detergent producing industry. The organic impurities in the form of paraffin oil and alkylbenzene can be up to 10 g / 1, most of which is in undissolved form. The dissolved proportions, however, are relatively small and are in the range of approx. 10 to 100 mg / 1. Oil separators or plate separators are usually used for the purification of such waste water, although these systems have some serious disadvantages.
Basically, the oil-water mixture is separated due to the different density. While 15 oil separators normally do not have any further internals, plates or sheets are arranged in different ways in the separators. The separation of the organic from the aqueous phase takes place preferably on the surface of the plate, since here the joining of the finest oil drops to 20 larger ones is favored.
Due to the high stability of the oil-water emulsion, the oil separators have a relatively low efficiency, so that they can be used in the rarest of cases.
The separating effect of the separators is better and sufficient in some 25 cases. However, a biological turf forms on the plates and between the oil / water boundary layer within a short period of time, so that fluidic problems occur within the separator, which greatly reduces the separation performance.
30 Furthermore, both systems are unable to remove the dissolved organic components from the wastewater.
There is also the possibility of such organic substances such. B. by ultrafiltration, centrifugation, extraction or adsorption on activated carbon from the water. The first 35 processes are relatively complex and uneconomical for larger amounts of wastewater.
The effectiveness of an extraction depends on good phase separation; in many cases this is not always the case. In addition, due to the water solubility of the extractant, residues accumulate in the aqueous phase, which naturally worsens the cleaning effect. The disadvantage of adsorption on activated carbon is the poor regenerability of the coal in the deposition of non-volatile substances. The activated carbon must therefore be reactivated, disposed of or incinerated using 45 complex methods.
Methods are known which are based on the use of plastic granules in the form of polystyrene or polyurethane bodies. These systems are preferred for fine cleaning, e.g. B. after oil separators used. However, only the undissolved oil components are removed from the water. Filters or filter aids of this type are only suitable for removing organic substances present in undissolved form up to a certain drop size. Other dissolved organic compounds present, such as e.g. B. benzene, toluene, etc. cannot be removed.
It is also known that adsorber resins based on polystyrene copolymer without functional end groups with a certain porosity are able to adsorb organic substances from water with different degrees of efficiency. The loaded resin can be mixed with solvents, e.g. As acetone or methanol, can be regenerated and reused, see e.g. patent application P-3 335 995.4 to the German Patent Office.
The invention is therefore based on the object of providing a method which does not have the disadvantages described in known methods and is capable of treating the wastewater accordingly and of reliably maintaining the required residual concentrations and in the case of a predetermined

nen Adsorberharzvólumen eine grössere Wassermenge bzw. Abwassermenge behandelt werden kann. a larger amount of water or wastewater can be treated.
The method according to the invention is used to achieve this object, which is characterized in that a column partially filled with the adsorber resin is charged with the water to be purified until a part of the undissolved organic substances forms a separate layer of organic phase, while remaining, undissolved organic substances are deposited directly on the surface of the resin and any dissolved organic substances present are adsorbed in the pores of the resin, and the undissolved organic substances and any existing dissolved organic substances removed from the water are recovered.
Preferred embodiments of the method according to the invention are described in more detail in claims 2 to 12.
The process according to the invention not only takes advantage of the good adsorption capacity of the resins, but it has surprisingly been found that the undissolved organic substances are deposited on the surface of a resin bed in the form of a deep filtration and within the aqueous phase, depending on their density, upwards rise or fall, forming a separate layer of organic phase. This separating, organic phase is also used for pre-cleaning for the wastewater flowing through this separated layer, since it removes droplets of undissolved organic substances, similar to an extraction, from the water.
The method according to the invention can therefore be broken down into the following subsections:
1. Vorreinigung durch eine aufschwimmende Phase; 1. Pre-cleaning through a floating phase;
2. Tiefenfiltration an der Harzoberfläche; 2. Deep filtration on the resin surface;
3. Adsorption of any dissolved components present in the pores of the resin, provided that they have not already been retained in the separate organic phase layer.
In terms of process engineering, the process according to the invention is carried out in a column or column without great effort.
The separated layer of organic phase, which either floats or sinks down, is rinsed with water from the column or column at certain time intervals, while the remaining, undissolved organic substances deposited directly on the resin surface and any dissolved organic substances present in the Pores of the resin are advantageously removed from time to time by solvent treatment. It is not necessary that the time intervals for removing the separated layer from the organic phase coincide with the time intervals for a solvent treatment.
The method according to the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the figure of the drawing enclosed in the system, the removal and recovery of organic substances with densities below 1 being described in more detail here.
In Fig. 1, 1 represents the floating, separate layer of organic phase, 2 means slot bottoms, 3 represents the part of the resin surface on which the finest oil droplets of the organic substances are agglomerated, which are then separated through the top slot bottom 2 to form the separated ones Pass through layer of floating organic phase 1, and 4 means the actual adsorption zone of the adsorber resin, in which residual, dissolved organic substances are held in the pores of the resin or on its surface.
In a pilot test, a resin bed volume of 301 was used in a suitable column, which corresponded to the column shown in the figure, the height of the resin bed was 0.6 m and its diameter was 0.25 m. The total height of the column was 2.0 m.

A water was used as contaminated water which contained paraffin oil, benzene and alkylbenzenes in proportions of approx. 1: 0.1: 1 in a concentration of 200 to 1000 ppm (ppm = parts per million).
This contaminated water was passed through the column at a rate of 4501 / h; after equilibrium conditions had been established in the column, the total concentration of paraffin oil, benzene and alkylbenzene in the purified water leaving was on average less than 1 mg / 1, ie. H. below 1 ppm.
From this it can be seen that not only the undissolved paraffin oils and alkylbenzenes were removed with good efficiency, but also that the benzene dissolved in water was almost completely bound to the adsorber resin.
15 Furthermore, an experiment was carried out in which several loading cycles were carried out with a wastewater with the composition given above. Here, regenerations were carried out after 72, 168, 240, 336 and 480 operating hours. The concentration of organic substances 20 in the waste water to be treated fluctuated between 200 and 800 ppm, in the purified waste water the maximum concentration of the organic substances not removed was around 2 ppm, although values as low as 0.2 ppm were also occasionally reached 25. The floating, separate layer of organic phase was removed after 24 to 48 hour intervals depending on the input concentrations by backwashing with water.
The resin must be regenerated 30 after certain time intervals. This is advantageously done with a suitable solvent, the adsorbed portions being eluted.
The remaining solvent after regeneration is removed from the resin surface by treatment with steam or by vacuum drying.
35 This effectively prevents the formation of a biological lawn or deposits in the column.
The resulting mixture of solvent and organic substances can then be distilled in a manner known per se, whereby pure solvent is recovered, which can be used again for regeneration.
The organic substances remaining in the bottom during distillation can be reused as required or disposed of, for example, by incineration.
4s The organic phase floating in zone 1 is washed back with water, i.e. H. in the reverse direction of flow to the flow of the water to be treated, rinsed out of the column and, after separation from the water, appropriately reused or disposed of.
The backwashing process removes any deposits from the column caused by biodegradation.
When using the method according to the invention for the removal of organic substances with a density above 1555, the formation of the separated layer from the organic phase naturally takes place in the lower part of the column, in this case the slotted trays 2 are of course located at a higher point in the column, so that sufficient, there is only space filled with water in the lower part of the column.
60 The method according to the invention is thus able to remove undissolved organic substances and any dissolved organic substances present from water or waste water in a relatively simple and extremely economical manner.
Since the concentrations in pure water are on average 1 mg / 1 = 1 ppm, so that the organic substances are practically removed, it can also be used to purify the water from such substances in a cycle, whereby the water

Verunreinigungen für weitere Spülprozesse erneut einzusetzen. can be reused several times. It is also possible. reuse the purified water for further rinsing processes due to its relatively low content of organic substances or impurities.
The process according to the invention is particularly suitable for purifying water which contains paraffin oils and alkylbenzenes as impurities and optionally small amounts of benzene. Such wastewater is obtained during the purification of detergent raw materials by distillation.
