Fig. 3 eine schematische Darstellung des gesamten Füllsystems.
Fig. 2).

The invention relates to a filling device for batteries, in particular accumulators, with a filling tube for insertion into a filling opening of the battery, which can be connected to a liquid container.
Before they are put into operation, batteries, in particular accumulators, must have an electrolyte, i.e. an acid or an alkaline solution, whereby a certain level in the battery must be reached. Furthermore, especially in the case of lead accumulators, water from the electrolytic solution is lost due to electrolytic decomposition during operation, which must be replaced by periodically refilling distilled water, the level of water required also being maintained here. If these refilling and refilling processes are carried out by hand without mechanical assistance, they are very time-consuming and require considerable concentration and reliability on the part of the person carrying out the work in order to avoid subsequent damage to the battery.
For this reason, various attempts are known from practice to automate the processes mentioned, which are based on the generation of a negative pressure in the battery cells, as a result of which liquid is sucked into the cells from a container. For this purpose, a filling hose and a hose for generating the negative pressure or for the return flow when the cell is filled must be connected airtight to the inside of the cell. The depth of the lower end of the latter tube in the cell determines the liquid level, since any excess is sucked into a reflux container. Devices of this type have significant
Disadvantages. If distilled water is to be replenished with this, a portion of the electrolyte is also sucked off when the water level is reached, which means that the concentration of the electrolyte is continuously reduced if it is refilled several times.
The vacuum tends to temporarily deform the cell walls in certain battery versions, which means that the level achieved after the filling process is changed again. The cells must also be absolutely airtight, otherwise the necessary negative pressure cannot be generated.
Finally, another important disadvantage to be mentioned is that the level, starting from the filling opening, i.e. is determined downwards from the cell cover. Since the height of the cell cover fluctuates above the electrolyte level with different battery designs, the use of adjusting washers in the area of the contact seals is necessary.
It is the object of the present invention to create a battery filling device which does not have the disadvantages explained above and which allows the electrolyte level to be set automatically both when filling first and when adding distilled water. This object is achieved according to the invention in a device of the type mentioned at the outset in that the filling tube is designed to be electrically conductive and that an electrically conductive level sensor is provided over a part of its length which determines the filling level, at a radial distance therefrom and by an air gap therefrom. in such a way that a circuit can be closed via the electrolyte when it reaches the level sensor between the filling tube and the level sensor in order to control the supply of liquid.
The filling tube preferably has an electrically insulating foot on its outlet side as a support on the battery plates. This means that the level above the battery plates can be set directly, regardless of the height of the cell cover, without the risk of a short circuit between these plates.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Show it:
1 is a sectional view through the essential parts of a filling head along the filling tube axis,
Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view of part of the filling tube with level sensor, and
Fig. 3 is a schematic representation of the entire filling system.
The filling head 1, which can be connected to a liquid container 11 via a hose 10 (FIG. 3), has a filling pipe 2 to which the hose is connected via a hollow screw 3 (FIG. 1). The filling pipe 2 serves to supply the liquid, i.e. Electrolyte or distilled water to the battery.
At its lower end, which is intended to rest on the battery plates, it has an insulating base 4, which has a radially extending slot 5 to ensure that the liquid can flow freely. The insulating foot 4 prevents a short circuit between the individual battery plates when the filling tube 2 is placed on it during the filling process, as will be explained later. It also serves to receive a mountable spacer 6 for setting the level h (FIG. 1) above the battery plates. This spacer, like the foot 4, is made of PVC and is sleeve-shaped. His coat can be provided with axial incisions in the upper part, which ensures a good fit on the foot 4. At the outflow end, the filling pipe has a narrowed point 7, which causes the flow in the filling pipe
liquid is prevented after the liquid supply has been interrupted. A level sensor 8 runs approximately parallel to the outside of the filling pipe. The upper part of this level sensor is designed as a pipe, followed by an approximately 7 cm long pipe segment 9, which surrounds the filling pipe 2 only over part of its circumference. The radial distance, i.e. the air gap between the filling pipe 2 and the level sensor 8 is approximately 2 mm in the upper region. At the bottom, the level sensor 8 is preferably bent outwards by a value a = approx. 1 mm (cf.
Fig. 2). The tubes have a smooth surface. The design explained prevents the formation of bubbles at the lower end of the level sensor when the level is reached. At the same time, the conical tube outlet ensures that the electrolyte between the filling tube and level sensor flows away quickly when the filling device is removed from the battery. Both prevent the circuit from being closed at the wrong time via the filling pipe and level sensor. The level sensor 9 and the filling tube 2 are made of electrically conductive, preferably corrosion-resistant material, preferably stainless steel or titanium with a wall thickness of about 2 mm, so that the corrosion effect of the electrolyte and the distilled water is reduced and the parts mentioned are considerable Preserve lifespan.
Filling tube 2 and level sensor 8 are held in a bearing block 12 made of plastic material. On the one hand, the aforementioned hollow screw 3 and a further screw 13 are used, both of which also serve as electrical connections for the control lines 14. A handle 15 is arranged on the bearing block 12, into which the liquid hose 10 and the control lines are inserted through an opening. The handle 15 also carries a push button switch 16 (shown schematically), with which the filling device is put into operation, as will be explained in detail.
The control lines 14 lead to a control box 17, which has the control device with a relay switch, a liquid shut-off valve 18 in the hose 10 and a main switch with a control lamp: the power is supplied by a battery 19, which allows the system to be arranged anywhere, for example on a trolley. The hose 10 is provided at the beginning with a pump 20, which in a, e.g. arranged with distilled water or electrolyte filled liquid container 11 and fed via the control device. The design of the control is not described in further details here, since the person skilled in the art can easily understand the following explanation of the functional sequence. 3, the control lines 14 are therefore only drawn schematically.
To start up the device, the main switch on the control box 17 is first confirmed in order to switch on the electrical control. The indicator lamp on the control box shows that it is ready for operation. Then the filling tube 2 is inserted into the cell until the foot 4 stands on the battery plates. If the pushbutton switch 16 is now pressed, the pump 20 begins to work, the shutoff valve 18 being opened at the same time. When the electrolyte reaches the level of the lower level sensor end, i.e. the desired level, a circuit is closed between the level sensor and the filling pipe 2 via the electrolyte. This activates a relay arranged in the control box 17, by means of which the pump 20 is switched off and at the same time the shut-off valve 18 is closed.
In this case, a fill level indicator lamp lights up, which is arranged on the fill head 1 and is preferably located in the pushbutton switch 16 itself, which indicates that the desired level has been reached. If the level indicator lamp lights up when the filling tube 2 is inserted into the cell, the actuation of the pushbutton 16 remains ineffective and the operator is informed that the level of the cell is still sufficient. The above-mentioned simultaneous actuation of pump 20 and shut-off valve 18 is essential. This ensures that the liquid hose 10 is always filled before and after the valve and that liquid flows into the cell immediately when the pushbutton 16 is actuated.
In addition, at the end of the filling process, the liquid is prevented from flowing back, particularly if the cells to be filled are lower than the liquid container 11.
The arrangement of the liquid container 11 can therefore take place independently of the position of the batteries to be filled, without this having an influence on the maintenance of the water level.
The filling device described has considerable advantages over the known devices. The opening or
The batteries can be refilled very quickly by merely inserting the filling tube 2 into the corresponding cell without special sealing measures having to be taken. For this reason, the device can also be used largely independently of the shape of the cell filling openings.
The determination of the level based on the battery plates ensures a more exact adherence to the required level, which means that no level check is necessary. At the same time, overfilling of the cells and influencing the electrolyte concentration are prevented.
