11. Turbocharger provided with the device according to claim 1.
The invention relates to a device for lubricating the bearing of the rotor of a turbocharger in which this bearing is housed in a sealed casing supplied with oil coming from the casing of an internal combustion engine. The invention also relates to a turbocharger provided with such a device.
As is known, the rotor of a turbocharger, and more particularly the turbine wheel of this rotor, is brought during its operation to very high temperatures which can reach 700 to 900 C. The supply of the casing in which is housed the rotor bearing, by a stream of pressurized oil, while the engine is running makes it possible to avoid excessive rise in the temperature of the seals which seal this casing, at the passages of the rotor, relative to the compartment containing the turbine wheel and the one containing the compressor wheel.
However, because the circulation of oil stops when the engine stops, while the rotor is still at its operating temperature, it can happen that these seals are deteriorated by heat and that it this results in oil leaks which can themselves cause deterioration of the turbocharger or even its destruction by fire.
The object of the invention is to eliminate this risk by means of a device making it possible to maintain the circulation of the lubricating oil in the bearing of the rotor of the turbocharger after the engine has stopped, at least for a time sufficient to allow the rotor to cool down to a temperature which presents no danger to the seals of the housing in which its bearing is housed.
To this end, the device according to the invention has the characteristics specified in claim 1.
The invention will be better understood thanks to the detailed description which follows, by way of example, of a particular embodiment of the device, with reference to the appended drawing in which:
fig. I is a schematic view of the device and FIG. 2 shows a detail of the lubrication oil supply circuit of the rotor bearing of a turbocharger, in accordance with an embodiment which can advantageously be combined with the embodiment of the device shown in FIG. 1.
The turbocharger shown in fig. I comprises, in a manner known per se, a rotor comprising two impellers, namely a turbine wheel E and a compressor wheel 2, mounted in series on a common shaft 3 carried by a ball bearing 4. The bearing 4 is housed in a sealed casing 5 isolated from compartment 6 containing the turbine wheel I and from compartment 7 containing the compressor wheel 2 by respective seals S and 9. A supply duct 10 supplies oil from the casing of the motor (not shown) in the casing 5 containing the bearing 4 of the rotor, at a pressure of the order of 3-105 pascals, in order to ensure its lubrication.
The conduit 10 comprises a non-return valve il, disposed downstream of the casing 5, in order to avoid backflow of the oil into the crankcase of the engine. The oil is evacuated from the crankcase 5 and returned to the crankcase of the engine or, optionally, to an intermediate tank (not shown), by an evacuation duct 12.
According to the invention, an auxiliary conduit 13 allows the supply of oil to the casing 5 to continue, after the engine has stopped. The oil brought into line 13 is taken either directly from the crankcase of the engine, or from an auxiliary oil tank (see fig. 2) and its circulation under the pressure necessary for good lubrication of bearing 4 of the turbocharger rotor. is ensured by means of an electric pump 14. The duct 13 is provided with a non-return valve 15. The starting and stopping of the electric pump 14 is controlled by a switch 16, placed on the supply circuit pump 14.
The switch 16 can advantageously be coupled with the engine contact control device so that the pump 14 is started automatically when the engine is stopped, the pump 14 being stopped at the by manual contact, or automatically. In the latter case, a timer (not shown) can be used which starts the pump 14 when the engine stops and starts it either after a predetermined lapse, for example of the order of 1 to 5 minutes, calculated so as to allow the turbocharger rotor to cool down to a temperature no longer dangerous for the seals 8 and 9 of the casing 5, that is to say when a sufficiently low temperature is detected by a thermal probe (not shown ).
Advantageously, as shown in FIG. 2, the end of the conduit 13 opposite that which opens into the casing 5 is only immersed to a reduced depth in the auxiliary oil tank 17, or the crankcase of the engine, so as to avoid excessive loss of engine oil in the event of an oil leak at the seals 8 and 9 of the casing 5. However, it is preferable that the corresponding end of the conduit 10 is immersed deeper than that of the conduit 13 in the reservoir of oil 17 or the crankcase of the engine, in order to allow a sufficient volume of oil to be available for the lubrication of bearing 4 while the engine is running, even in the event of an oil leak through the seals 8 and 9. I1 is worth noting
that, in the event that such an oil leak, during engine operation, reaches an excessive degree, it would, in any case, be easily detectable due to the emission of a large cloud of bluish smoke at the level of the exhaust. On the contrary, such detection is not possible when the engine is stopped, which justifies the precaution indicated above. Furthermore, in a manner known per se, the duct 12 for discharging the oil from the casing 5 opens into the auxiliary tank 17 or the crankcase of the engine, above the highest level reached by the oil, in order to d '' avoid a possible siphon effect in the duct 12.
